Full story: SMMEs attack Telkom tariffs
The SMME Forum has launched a scathing attack on Telkom's latest tariff adjustments, claiming it is incongruent with government's efforts to encourage growth in the sector.

The thrust of its argument is that the monopoly's 5.5% increase in the cost of domestic telephone calls will ultimately most affect those who cannot afford alternative means of communication such as least-cost routing or voice over IP (VOIP).

Any person who will defend Telkom will face the wrath of years of built up anger from overcharged consumers.

Well I hate to state the obvious, but we will never find out unless we complain to start with ;)

I think the general public is definately catching up with the truth. I believe the following factors contributed to sudden interest in Telkoms monopoly.

1. The biggest would definately be MyADSL, the contributions of members and hard work of the moderators and rpm have created a well known platform for "the truth"

2. Carte Blanch, as much rubbish as they come up with their insert on Telkom definately got some people curious enough to research "the truth"

3. Hellkom & Telkomsucks, these 2 sites attracted a huge amount of attention when Telkom tried to shut them down. Once again "the truth" was available to users that have never before considered Telkom as a rip off.

4. Telkom themselves are digging the grave, years of terrible service and shocking pricing have led many consumers & businesses to question the situation.

5. The February deregulation announcements have also sparked interest in Telekoms of SA. Anyone running a search on google would find one of the informative sites mentioned above.

6. Competition, with Sentech & WBS providing alternative internet solutions the public has realised that Telkom is not the only provider in the country. Atleast not for Internet connectivity.

7. Broadband itself has given many consumers the opportunity to keep south african internet alive, sites like myadsl would not have half the interest or usage if everyone was still stuck on dialup - knowledge is power.

I think all the whining will pay off in time, once more of the public becomes aware of "the truth" I'm sure that if enough pressure is placed on goverment they will be forced to let go of their profit hog (Telkom) and push for cheaper alternatives and perhaps REAL competition. The current SNO will just be another goverment pawn. I would prefer a independent company such as Bell South or AT&T. Even better both.

If the goverment could only realise that they will make 1000x more money off a sustainable economy than what they make off Telkom things would be a whole lot better.
