2006 Corsa B Fan Workings,

I've googled numerous variations and cant find an explanation. Can someone explain how the two fans work with respect to the cooling system. One fan is situated left between the bumper and radiator and the other fan on the right side of the radiator. At which point do the fans switch on temperature wise? Let's say the gauge is marked as (0 - 25 - 50 - 100%). When the needle is at the half-way position the left fan switches on. Left fan also switches on when the A/C is on. I've not seen the right fan work.
 
I haven't taken time to monitor how they operate but the fan bolted onto the radiator that has the coolant pipes is for cooling the hot water from the engine and the other is for the aircon, now that you've mentioned it I will take take time and see how exactly they operate, I have always assumed one comes for the aircon and one comes on when the temperature rises.

I will report back.
 
Isn’t the one fan for the A/C? And the other one for the engine? Test it by switching A/C on and check, it should go on immediately.
 
You mean like the older VWs? I've never come across an Opel that does that, at least mine does not, when you switch the car of everything is off.

My Corsa certainly did it in the heat of summer.

So probably depends where you stay and when.

But was purely a guess based on that.

He says in the original post that the one fan comes on for both the AC and normal car operations.

Which is why I thought maybe the other is a secondary (possibly smaller?) fan that would run after shut off in extreme conditions.
 
Ok, reporting back.

One fan on the inside, passenger side comes on when you switch on the aircon, it's the same one which is used to cool the radiator. The other smaller fan situated on the outer side, closest to the bumper on the drivers side does nothing when the aircon is switched on.

After studying the situation for a while this is my conclusion, the bigger fan on the passenger's side works for both the aircon cooling as well as cooling the water radiator, it covers the bigger portion of the radiator leaving only a small portion on the drivers side where the aircon pipes are in the way, which i believe that's what the smaller fan should take care of, if and when it's required.

SauRoNZA's point is valid, the other one is smaller and since it seems that it's seldom required maybe most owners such as myself and OP have never seen it in operation.
 
Easy way to fix that.

Start popping a head gasket or have a failing thermostat.



But seriously it would make sense to run a smaller fan after shutdown when it’s on battery only.

Come to think of it when that happens it’s a much louder higher pitched noise and so higher rpm...which usually means smaller fan.

So now I’m pretty certain that’s the use case thinking back.
 
Come to think of it, i have a dangling plug of wires which looks the same as the one that's plugged on the bigger fan, I should check if they weren't uplugged from the smaller fan.

This is interesting. So my left fan comes on when the temp reaches halfway or when the aircon switches on. the right fan i've never seen run. It is plugged in but interestingly enought there is another plug hanging there as well....

On models with aircon, there are two switches fitted to the radiator, both switches operate the cooling fan and the aircon auxiliary cooling fan simultaneously. The lower switch operates at 100 degrees Celsius, switching both fans at low speed and the upper switch turns on both fans on full speed at wot degrees Celsius.

If a fan does not appear to work, run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, then allow it to idle. If the fan does not cut in within a few minutes (or before temperature gauge indicates overheating ), switch off the ignition and disconnect the wiring plug from the cooling fan switch, bridge the two contacts in the wiring plug with a wire and switch on the ignition. If the fan operates, the switch is probably faulty.

If the fan still fails to operate, check that full battery voltage is available at the feed wire to the switch, if not then there is a fault on the feed wire or a blown fuse, possibly due to a fault on the fan motor. If you get the 12V on the feed wire, check for continuity between the switch earth terminal and a good earth point on the body, if there isn't then the earth connection is faulty and should be remade.

If the switch and the wiring are in good condition, the fault must lie in the motor itself, the motor can be checked by disconnecting the motor wiring connecter and connecting a 12v supply directly to the motor terminals.
