Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a 2007 BMW 320d with about 50000kms on the clock. Would like to know if there is anything bad about this car? I've only ever driven petrol engine cars, and honestly the thought of a diesel car scares me a bit, so any advice on what to look out for on this car would really help. Thanks.

Some of the older 320d's (circa 2002/2003) had trouble with the turbo.

Don't think that there is a problem with the newer models.

BTW, I have a 2002 330D, never had a problem with the turbo or engine.

2007 should still be under motorplan, and you can extend it up to 7 years. It's cheap as long as your mileage is under 100 000 km.

I went on a ITIL course about 2 months ago...and our instructor had one...he was PISSED as BMW could not fix some issues, and when the car went to them it came back with even more issues...aparently BMW dealers are also as bad as others...dealers cannot fix cars...they just replace parts, so when real issues arise that's not just a quick replace/fix...its curtains...rather stay away from anything diesel, as its just issues after issues...but the one you looking at has low km's and must prolly be under waranty - and we've heard that BMW has the best waranty service and feedback in the game...Why not go for a 325i...what's the price of that car?

I'm buying privately and the car is going for R165000. I think that is quite cheap for this car, right?

sounds decent...it still has quite sometime under motor plan ( yes BMW Motor Plan rocks - replaced my cup holders the other day) so u should be ok

The car will still be under motorplan and bmw will look after it for another 50 000kms or few years.

If BMW will look after it i say go for it...did you drive it yet?

Just remember that you have to take the car in to BMW for a check and pay $$$ to get the Motorplan transferred into your name. It is NOT automatic, and if you dont do it, your forfeit the Motorplan. They charged me R2900 to transfer the maintenance plan on my 330Ci into my name (from the companies name - even though I was the primary user of the car), and an additional R3800 to update the Maps on the SATNAV from 2008 to 2010 (basically just a new DVD). Try get rid of the car before the maintenance expires. They are extremely expensive to repair out of plan. The folding mechanisms on my roof packed up, and the invoice to the Motorplan dept from the BM dealership was R30,000 odd to replace it...
