I am not mechanically inclined and know nothing about engines.
My 2007 Chev Aveo 1.5LT refused to start a month ago - it has 125 000kms on the clock. At first the local backyard mechanic thought that its the petrol pump which we replaced, but it was still not starting. Took it to a diagnostic guy who picked up that there is low pressure that caused it to not start. A second guy found that the crank is broken.

Now, apparently it is very expensive to open up a engine and my mechanic advised me to rather get an imported engine as opening up and overhauling the engine will cost close to R10k. My questions are:
* Is the R10k to open up and overhaul the engine reasonable?
* Does anyone have any experience in buying an imported Aveo engine and what was the experience like?

Any comments will be appreciated.

It takes a LOT to break a crankshaft. And if a crankshaft breaks - unlikely, but possible - there is normally a lot of other damage.

Low pressure on one or more cylinders normally indicates the need for a head job, possibly new rings, water pump, etc.. These are all easy faults to diagnose, so my recommendation is that maybe you should get another opinion from a better mechanic.

I'm guessing he meant a broken timing belt that means the engine won't crank, that's a 10k job.

A broken crankshaft = a new engine. As said above if you snap a crankshaft something very very serious has gone wrong.

I think he meant cam shaft.

A broken camshaft also doesn't just happen, maybe a timing belt snapping at high revs or a head gasket letting water in that gets compressed. But there's a LOT of things that will break before snapping a camshaft.

A decent import engine is often a bargain of note, compared to the cost of rebuilding an existing engine.

Oh but I've seen it, the oke didn't service it often and the oil got turned into sludge, it must have done something and it snapped.

Thanks to all for the replies. It appears that it's a pulley attached to the cranck = this pulley drives a belt on the side of the engine. My mechanic is worried that the inside of the engine is damaged due to this.
