It is being sent to AA for a comprehensive mechanical checkup, would that ferret out this sort of thing?

According to the dealership it has not been in an accident, no.

Can you elaborate a bit on the alignment comment, as it looks fine to me.

For some reason I don't see the image on Gumtree, but the price seems to be decent compared to other '08 1.4 Corollas on AutoTrader. I'm unsure what the exact spec differences would be between Professional/Advanced/Sprinter models though. That being said, is this the previous generation Corolla we're talking about?

The AA test is unlikely to bring to light any prior accident damage, unless it was very poorly repaired. That test is meant only to discern whether a car is fit for use or not.

As for the car in general: it'll likely get you where you want to go with clockwork reliability, but it won't ever do much more than that. Toyotas, by and large, are commuting appliances - if that's all you're looking for, then so be it. Just don't expect stellar economy, as it's a fairly sizeable car with a wheezy 1.4l motor...

You make a good point about the fuel consumption.

The car is just a town runabout, I believe.

AA test is a waste of money imo, much better to get someone you know that knows something about cars to take a look.

for example look for signs of accident repair, eg are there any stone chips on the bumper or bonnet? well there should be, indicates the car likely hasn't been resprayed etc

There definitely were stone chips on the bonnet, yes.

Presume so, it seems to be the official figure. I guess what I am curious about, is how this figure, in general relates to other manufacturer specs for other cars.

I am not a car person, as you can probably gather, all this **** is utter greek to me. :D
 
Those shapes were discontinued in 2007 buddy
Make sure all is fine

If so, its a lovely everyday car, u cant go wrong and it will not depreciate very much in years to come

Yes bro, 100%
The Corolla Professional/Auris Shape was launched in 2007, the last of the Sprinter/RunX shapes were 2007, absolutely impossible for it to be an 08 model

If you are spending R100k and u dont need a boot, rather get an Auris boet, much better car all round. Otherwise if you are lucky, you can get the 1.4 new shape Corolla for around R10k more.

it could have just been registered the following jan etc, old stock etc could it have not?

for example i buy a car end this year, like Dec, but have it registered in Jan, then i am driving a 2013 model.

That is a possibility, but the Auris/Rolla's came out mid year if I remember, if they came out in November then it could have just been old stock. ITs from a dealer so sure all paperwork is right

For R100k, rather get the newer car though, as much as the Sprinters are nice
