2010-2012 Corolla 1.3 Fuel Consumption.......

Hi gents,

I was recently up in Nelspruit and had to drive to Sappi in Ngodwana - definitely the Kruger airport is the best in the country lookswise

I had a rental 1.3 Corolla, with over 10000km on the clock. Still drove like new.
Now I wasn't in a hurry so drove the speed limit all through the journey and return and was shocked at the fuel consumption that I got, especially since its the highveld!

4.9l/100km Average according to the OBC, and in the 150km that I did, it used 1/8th of the tank of fuel! Basically the half-way mark between 3/4 and full.

I know its a Corolla and just an appliance, but as an appliance, it does its job really well and really economically. I have the Auris 1.33, but best fuel I've gotten on average is 6.2l/100km, maybe thats due to me running 225/45/17" wheels as compared to the 15" steelies that the Rolla comes with.

In regards to speed, yes it is better to have a faster car, but I've found that many of the guys with hot hatches and even BMW E90 320i's are driving between 90-100km/hr on the freeways daily - my observations as I do 100km daily also. The other day myself in my RunX RSi, a Golf 6 Gti and a Golf 5 Gti were all like the slowest cars on the road following each other because we were 'trying to drive economically' whereas the guys in the Yaris', Polo's, etc were driving at 120km/hr happily.

Those of us who dont have company petrol have to adjust to the fuel change sadly

I've noticed the same thing especially on the N1 between Midrand and Pretoria.
Most of the luxury vehicles are driving 100km/h and all the guys weaving between the traffic at 120km+ are 4x4's and small cars.
I hog the far left lane with cruise control set at 100km/h and get about 6.3L/100km on each tank.
I just have to ignore the idiots who get annoyed because I'm blocking them from overtaking at 140km/h in the left lane.

Scooters as well, I see them racing around at 120-140 km/h I don't care how small your engine is at that speed/rev's you'll be killing your fuel in no time.

I had a 170 scooter and I got terrible mileage because I was either accelerating or braking, no cruising, no easing off the acceleration. Either speeding up or braking.

I got about 45 minutes or riding out of 2l of petrol.

Glad I'm not the only one noticing all the luxury cars driving slow just to save gas. I only use my BMW on a Sunday, and minimum gas filled is R150 = R600 monthly!

I think Hybrids will definitely make sense in the future in heavy traffic like JHB. Pricing is way out now though, hopefully the new Yaris Hybrid is around R200k, that would put it within reach at least.
