Turkey Preview - who can beat the bull?


The undulating 5.338-kilometre Istanbul Park circuit is unusual in that it is one of only four on the calendar that runs anti-clockwise, the other three being Singapore, Brazil’s Interlagos and Abu Dhabi. Its unique selling point is the formidable Turn Eight, the everlasting left-hander which has three apexes and is taken around 250 km/h at arguably the highest G-forces the drivers experience during the season. Elsewhere, speeds reach 320 km/h and track temperatures of up to 55 degrees Celsius are to be expected. It’s a tough place.

This thread is proof that F1 is getting boring lol... bar the last few laps... awesome to see team-mates racing again. Win some lose some, but fun for fans! Not a bad result for Webber who's closest rival is his team mate. While I'm sure he would rather be a five points up with the team benefiting, I'm also sure he's not unhappy with snatching a haul of points against Vettel.

I do find it strange that people aren't jumping out of the woodwork to criticise Vettel's bold move on his teammate as stupid. I think it was awesome personally although from a team perspective, they may feel different. I just hope the team doesn't forbid them to do that in future.

It appears Vettel did nothing wrong, but for some reason his car drifted right into Webber's car, so it was neither's fault... someone underestimated the power of a vacuum IMO.

That Button Hamilton moment was quite something...
It seemed the McLaren duo had been handed the race on a plate but the drama wasn’t over. There was a small amount of rain, but around this time the McLaren drivers were also told to conserve fuel. Button sliced into Hamilton’s lead and got a similar run on him going into Turn 12 on Lap 48. But he was on the outside, and as Hamilton hung tough on the inside they went side by side through that corner. And 13. And 14.

Across the finish line they were officially separated by 0.0s, and Button was credited with the lead, but Hamilton wasn’t done yet and they touched wheels lightly as he pushed back through into first place going into Turn One. It was fabulous stuff, and thereafter he was able to open the gap up again to score a timely victory as both he and Button eased off to save fuel.

Boring? this for was one of the best gp's i have watched all season.

Absolutely epic the way hamilton drove, vettel was a bit silly if you ask me, he had webber he just needed to hold station and get pasted him. No need to swing wildly to the right. So nice to see teams racing each other instead of just bringing the cars home, the sport is about us the people who watch it and keep the huge amounts of money flowing and watching redbull and mclaren race today was wonderful.

Button is surprising everyone who thought hamilton would destroy him. Awesome awesome race and i hope mark and vettel begin to hate each other because that will make things interesting. There should be no team orders, each driver should have his own camp and there should be none of this save fuel save tyre's rubbish. Just get out there and race. Obviously if let's say vettel has no chance of winning the title or visa versa then use team orders but for now i want to see this every race :D.

+1+1 Absolutely - it's about time too. The last few laps reminded me of a much condensed version of that Vielneuve vs Arnoux battle. We'll have to see team wise who takes the "Well at least they tried" attitude vs the "Teammates should never race each other" attitude. Warranted or not in the situation, Vettel wanted to stay ahead of Webber in the points and rightly so - I'd rather he make a mistake trying than not try at all. Button is indeed surprising everyone. Consistency vs hard racing is definitely more his style and thus far it has worked.

Watching the Vettel / Webber dice again, I would say that Vettel ended up on the bumpy side of the track... watch how he fights the car vs Webber who was stuck to the road...
I wonder if they didn't quietly put the F-Duct on Vettel's car for this race? Apparenly one of the downsides to it is the lower downforce - that appeared to be Vettel's issue going into that accident. As you see them from the front, he is bouncing while Webber is glued to the tarmac.

I would guess that the F-Duct, if it lowers downforce, is McLaren's issue with qualifying. Faster tracks with longer straights may help, but having lower downforce in exchange for higher top speed is going to hurt on a slower track.

"They are both grown-ups, they are both big boys, they are both competitors, and the most important thing is that we have given away a load of points today and it must not happen again. They must learn from it.

"It is right to let the drivers race, we saw McLaren today letting their drivers race, but when drivers are in the same team it is important that they give each other a bit more respect and concede if one has got a run on the other."

The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is on June 13.

Horner said the team treated both drivers equally and gave them the same equipment and that policy would continue.

He also clarified how Vettel had suddenly managed to get within striking distance of Webber after the Australian had seemed previously unthreatened in the lead.

"We now have all the facts," he said. "Mark had changed down into a fuel saving mode that cost him a little bit of performance on the straights, which also explains how Sebastian got a very clear run on him.

"He (Vettel) had managed to save an extra kilogramme of fuel, as both cars start the race with the same amount of fuel.

"So effectively he had one more lap of the optimum engine mode, but we couldn't back him off because he was under pressure from Lewis Hamilton behind."

Hamilton inherited the lead when the Red Bulls drove each other off the track, leading McLaren team mate Jenson Button to a one-two finish.

No fun you must have missed redbull nailing each other and the mclaren boys knocking boots :D

I tend to agree that webber gave him no room. He was almost on the grass holding on for dear life :D.
 
Lol@ Killa... awesome race for sure. I still think they need to limit the car's length / width to get more race out of them. I don't think it will be possible with refuelling ban though.
 
Red bull are now saying Webber was NOT at fault...
instead they are trying to please both by blaming them equally... I think they are going about it totally the wrong way:

Red Bull Racing has conceded that it was wrong to pin the blame on Mark Webber for the clash with team-mate Sebastian Vettel in Turkey last weekend - with the team now believing their coming-together was simply an 'unnecessary' racing accident.

In a press release Q & A issued by the team on Tuesday to try and defuse the controversy surrounding the team, team principal Christian Horner cast further light on the events building up to the incident.

Having had two days to analyse the crash and the circumstances surrounding it, Horner said that all factions of the team - including Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko - now believed both drivers should share the blame for what happened.

Firstly, I don't see why Webber had to move over and say 'After you Seb'... Secondly, Seb made the aggressive move - totally warranted IMO - but he should shoulder the blame for not executing it within the parameters of the car that he had been racing almost the entire race. He knew the car better than anyone and took it too close for comfort. I say blame neither and get on with it as a fact of life... and don't tell them not to do it again... sure, take precautions, but DO RACE EACH OTHER!

Of course I don't think I'd expect any less from a cheesed off team boss - possibly would have been the same for McLaren if they had come together... will never know though.
 
I think the issue here is race but give each other room, his move was aggressive but he was far faster than webber and i have seen webber is not exactly an angel he is also really aggressive and would have given seb no room.

The Mclaren guys could have also taken each other out as you mention, this is racing in my opinion and as i said they need to consider the viewers before giving team orders. F1 has been in a bit a downward spiral of late and honestly we need these guys to race each other to keep it entertaining. Those 2 racing incidents were just the best i have seen all season :D. Far better than watching redbul bring them home.

F that f1 is about racing!!!!!! Senna prost partnership developing i am hoping :D. Button must lie down he must go for hamilton like he did. Neither team has a no 1 driver even though some thought hamilton would trounce button.

Right, Button has been pretty sublime - some would say lucky, but sure, you have to be lucky sometimes - but we all know Gary Player put it best... the more you practice, the luckier you get... sometimes you have to go for broke and Button owes at least one race win to that.

Well winning a f1 GP is not all about how well you drive all the time, you could say hamilton was lucky to get his first win last time out because he was 3rd before the incident :D. I could not see hamilton winning that race without the redbulls doing what they did. Same can be said about button, different circumstances but still luck from both sides.
 
Right, he did get lucky, but that's why you fight for position even if it seems hopeless - you never know when you will score. If they had backed off some laps before just to finish the race, you miss out.
