2011 Polo GTI Engine Issues - Advice needed.

We have no idea what the OP's intention is with the car when it's up and running again.
Maybe he sells it in 3 months time and then a new VW engine with warranty will be in his favour.

Definitely, this being done by an independent greatly diminish it's resale value, the next buyer won't have peace of mind.

For context, a claim on my SEAT's engine for:
10 valves, head skim, seals, timing belt, tensioner, serpentine belt came to R30k
I don't think a new crankcase, crankshaft, pistons, bearings etc will be less than that.

No for sure I fully agree.

But let's not for a moment think their real cost is 60k and therefore you are getting a good deal paying "your part" of it.

If the engine is running perfectly etc after the work, why would the next buyer even know?

Maybe, but most 2011 cars don't need their engines rebuilt yet.
This one did. However I would not disclose it if I traded it in unless they make you sign that thing stating you have never done repair work on the car that amounts to more of 10% of it's trade-in value. The buyer bought the car in good faith that this would not happen, unfortunately it did, the problem was fixed, queue next buyer.

Hint : Buy a Hyundai/Opel with 5year warranty instead.

Out of curiosity, what are the rates for other brands? Can you provide a list please?
They are all around the same rate (R500). Won't be getting cheaper either considering the climate.

I know more or less what other manufacturers ask per hour for labour. I would just liked to have seen some proof of "VW have quite a high labour rate, even when compared against the more premium brands". :)

Oh, I think it's a perception that VW is a rip. I guess it is different at all dealers as it depends on specific overheads etc. I find Hatfield VW cheaper than most, not that I use them anymore since their skills have ducked.

So Im driving an Up! for the next couple of weeks whilst my engine is repaired.

They need to machine and send out a new block from Germany (this is what the service advisor told me)

Im not rushing them as I would rather they take their time and do it properly.

I will most likely sell the car a month or so after I get it back and fixed.

Have been looking around and kinda like the idea of an X1 anybody have any opinion on these cars?

Sorry just to add.

I won't be buying new (can't afford it) but will look to extend the warrant. Now that I have learnt my lesson.

BMW comes with a 100 000km / 5 year warranty

You can extend it to 200 000km / 7 years, but it must still be under warranty.
