I did a search on the forum regarding AV software but most are dated.

I am looking for a free and paid AV. I am using AVG free but a scan on another computer led to a USB worm. I will be backing up a server soon via USB as per my client's wishes and I do not want to infect that server.

I'd like some recommendations please.

Avoid Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 on anything other than a clean install of Windows 7/8. It's very buggy and tends to crash frequently on cluttered Windows 7 PC's.

Eset Smart Security is lightweight and non-intrusive, but it doesn't have an excellent detection rate and is quite expensive.

Bitdefender Internet Security 2014 is the best of the 3. It doesn't always play nice with Windows XP, but on Windows 7 it works nicely.

As for AVG. Any one of the above 3 scanners is far better.

1) common sense

I didn't know people still have this debate. Like Necuno said: Common Sense

For everything else I've been running MSE for a couple of years now with no problems.

The only other one I ever liked was Bitdefender.

Not trolling or derailing but as I am now using Mac what are the recommendations?
I heard the story that Mac doesn't need an AV

Paid:
1. Kaspersky (Internet Security)
2. Eset (Smart Security)
3. Bitdefender (Internet Security)

Free:
1. avast Free Anti-Virus
2. Bitdefender Free
3. Microsoft Security Essentials

Free Scanners:
1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
2. SuperAntiSpyware
3. HitManPro
4. Adwcleaner

Prevention:
1. SpywareBlaster

Thank you! I will give these a try. I see AVG is not on the list so will be uninstalling that soon.

I did have a look at Bitdefender but had heard some negatives. I will look into this, does it cover multiple computers per licence or is it a one licence, one computer story?

Avast ftw

Thank you! I will give this one a try.

Use linux (ubuntu) on old laptop for surfing. Use Desktop for gaming but not surfing.

Thank you, once I finish this job, I will give this option a try.

I also have heard that Mac does not need one due to the low rate of viruses the OS encounters. Better to be safe than sorry though!

I've never used an AV on a Mac. :)

Common sense, as stated by many is all you really need.

Yeah defiantly stay clear away from anything AVG, also stay away from programs that claim to make your PC faster or "fix your registry" or "clean your registry"

The problem with Bitdefender is that it's very resource hungry, so it will impact your Pc's performance to some degree, especially if your Pc is a low end one.

You can get multiple Pc keys for Bitdefender.

To those who say they have never had a problem with MSE and don't use anything else:

:D

Always use a second scanner such as Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware to check for anything that Microsoft Security Essentials might have missed. No one anti-virus program is perfect.

Nah! MSE is awesome! :p

We used to run Mc[-]****ingSlowAndUseless[/-]Affee at work but the hardware guys finally decided to switch to MSE (or whatever the enterprise version is called).

On my home machine - I don't engage in "risky" behaviour.

Avast ftw

Yeah that is what I am using, too...haven't had a problem with it, other than a compatibility issue with Windows 8.1, which has been resolved now. I am thinking of upgrading my Avast to the best one, Avast Premier.
