Opel rejigs Corsa range … and cuts prices (slightly)

Opel South Africa (which will have a new official distributor locally from January 2018) has revised its Corsa line-up, resulting in what it describes as “improved specifications” for some derivatives as well as marginal price drops across the range. Sadly, though, there is still no mention of an OPC-badged flagship.

The range has been pared back from five variants to four, with the entry-level Essentia model now featuring a 1,0-litre three-cylinder engine in 66 kW/170 N.m guise and mated to a six-speed manual (the outgoing base model had the full 85 kW output).

This revised model comes in at R200 600 and, with the radio/Bluetooth/USB/air conditioner optional package fitted, this figures rises to R210 600, which Opel SA says represents a cut of R4 000 on the final dealer floor price.

Next up are two Enjoy models; one in six-speed manual and the other in six-speed automatic form. As before, the manual is the 85 kW version of the turbo-triple, while the two-pedal version is equipped with the 66 kW/130 N.m 1,4-litre naturally aspirated four-pot.

Enjoy derivatives lose front foglamps and LED daytime running lights from their standard specification lists, but gain the IntelliLink infotainment system as well as tyre-pressure monitoring. Another notable change is the adoption of a single-piece rather than a 60/40 split rear seat. Pricing falls slightly from R234 800 to R234 300 for the manual and from R235 100 to R234 800 for the self-shifter. As we said, marginal.

The Cosmo derivative, meanwhile, has been scrapped altogether, leaving the Corsa Sport again sitting at the summit of the local range. This variant still employs a peppy 1,4-litre turbopetrol worth 110 kW/220 N.m, linked to a six-speed manual.

Inside, though, Opel says this model has “inherited the look and feel of the Cosmo”, gaining a chrome beltline and door handle accents. The Corsa Sport also now features “more voluminous seats” with fresh upholstery, a sunroof, tyre-pressure monitoring, park assist and side blind spot alert. The price falls slightly from R276 200 to R275 600.

As before, the Corsa range features a five-year/120 000 km warranty and a three-year/60 000 km service plan.

Pricing:

Opel Corsa 1,0T Essentia: R200 600
Opel Corsa 1,0T Enjoy: R234 300
Opel Corsa 1,4 Enjoy Auto: R234 800
Opel Corsa 1,4T Sport: R275 600

Opel SA revises Corsa line-up: 'Price drops across the range'

• New 1.0 T Engine for Essentia Model
• Sport takes on the halo model role
• New specifications

Opel has revised its local Corsa range, with improved specifications for some variants and reduced prices across the range.

Opel says it polled more than 600 B-segment hatchback in South Africa and the result "is a revised Corsa range, with the line-up reduced by one derivative and the rest of the changing specification".

The entry-level Essentia gains a new 1.0-litre 3 cylinder engine, capable of 66kW/170Nm, mated to a six-speed manual. Fuel consumption is rated at 4.6 litres/100km with emissions of 107g/km.

Drop is price for Essentia

The Essentia costs R200 600 with the additional radio/Bluetooth/USB/aircon option package its price moves R210 600 – a price cut of R4000.

The Enjoy versions can be powered by a 85kW version of the 1.0 litre (manual transmission) while an auto variant is coupled with a 1.4-litre normally-aspirated four-cylinder.

While foglights and LEDs disappear, both versions sport the automaker's IntelliLink infotainment system as well as tyre pressure monitoring. Like the Essentia, key information is imparted via a new monochrome display cluster. Other changes include a single-piece rear bench rather than a 60/40 split rear seat.

Prices are reduced from R234 800 to R234 300 for the manual and from R235 100 to R234 800 for the auto.

Previously, flagship honours were shared by the Corsa Sport and the Corsa Cosmo, but due to the large overlap in what they offered the consumer, the latter has been discontinued. The Sport has been re-specced though its 1.4-litre turbopetrol (110kW/220Nm) remains.

Inside, it inherits the styling form the Cosmo, including the chromed beltline and door release accents, more voluminous seats and a sunroof.

As with the Enjoy versions, a tyre pressure monitoring has been added, along with advanced park assist and side blind-spot alert (which is optional on its Enjoy stablemates). The price has come down from R276 200 to R275 600.

Opel Corsa gets range realignment (and detune)

Now that Opel is officially here to stay thanks to the Williams Hunt group, albeit still under the General Motors banner until the end of this year, the local Corsa range has been given a bit of a rejig in order to boost showroom traffic.

The result is a rationalised hatchback range with slightly lower prices, and less power in the case of the base Essentia model, although conveniently Opel only mentions the “better economy” aspect.

The Essentia is still powered by Opel’s impressive little 1-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol engine, albeit detuned from 85kW to 66kW, while maximum torque remains at 170Nm, between 1700 and 3700rpm.

The price has been snipped by R1200, to R200 600 for the base version without air conditioning or radio, assuming that anyone still buys cars without these features, but there is a R4000 overall saving for those opting for the ‘Option Pack 1’ (giving you the aircon, radio and Bluetooth) and bringing the price up to R210 600, which is still highly segment-competitive.

Further upstream, the luxurious Cosmo model falls away, leaving a pair of better-appointed Enjoy derivatives to play the entire midrange game. In manual form it still enjoys the full-fat 85kW 1.0T tuning, and costs R234 300, a R500 saving. Yet as before, the Enjoy auto is fitted with a 66kW/130Nm normally aspirated petrol engine and enjoys a R300 price reduction, to R234 800.

In spec terms the Enjoy models lose the 60:40 rear seat split as well as the foglights and LED running lamps but they gain the 17.8cm Intellilink infotainment system and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Those opting for the Enjoy Option Pack 1 also get front and rear park assist, Handsfree (semi-automated) Parking and side blind spot alert.

At the top of the range, the Corsa Sport, which is powered by a 110kW/220Nm 1.4-litre turbopetrol engine, gains some of the interior “look and feel” features of the discontinued 1.0T Cosmo. This includes a chrome beltline and door handle accents, improved seats upholstered in ‘Morrocana’ fabric, a sunroof, and tyre pressure monitoring. Also included is park assist and side blind spot alert.

All models are sold with a five-year/120 000km warranty and three-year/60 000km service plan, which will be honoured by Opel’s new importer after General Motors officially departs at the end of this year.

Opel reveals Corsa S … with OPC-inspired styling

Last year, Opel introduced the sprightly Adam S, which uses the brand’s turbocharged 1,4-litre four-cylinder engine and makes for an entertaining little warm hatch. Now Opel in Germany has taken the wraps off the Corsa S, which features pretty much the same setup.

Thing is, we have something similar in South Africa already, and have had for some time now. In fact, we ran a Corsa Sport as part of our long-term fleet not all that long ago. Granted, that model featured five doors, unlike the three-door model you see here (although the Corsa S will also be offered in five-door guise in Europe).

The Corsa S uses the same 1,4-litre engine as the Sport model and Adam S, which means it has 110 kW and 220 N.m of torque sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. This gives it a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 8,9 seconds and a top speed of 207 km/h (interestingly, slightly better figures than claimed for SA’s Corsa Sport).

Visually, however, there are a few changes that Opel says were OPC-inspired. The Corsa S dons a larger boot spoiler, side-skirts and rear lip, along with a chrome-effect exhaust tip. Other design cues include faux-carbon-fibre side-mirror caps and 17-inch titanium alloy wheels (again, the same wheels as those used on the Corsa Sport). Interestingly, there are also OPC badges sited on the front fenders just below the indicators.

Inside, the driver is greeted by a leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, aluminium sports pedals and a splash of red accenting. The Corsa S also comes standard with tinted windows and the brand’s 4,0 IntelliLink system. The leather Recaro bucket seats you see below, however, are an optional extra. And unlike the Adam S, which comes standard with ContiSportContact tyres, the Corsa S is fitted with the Continental ContiEcoContact.

No word yet on whether this model will make its way to South Africa, but it seems unlikely considering Opel SA already has this base covered (and recently rejigged its local Corsa line-up)…

Vauxhall Corsa diesel axed due to low demand

The latest car to drop its oil-burning variant is one of Britain’s top-sellers

The Vauxhall Corsa will no longer be offered with a diesel engine because the variant represented just 2.5% of the model’s sales.

Corsas powered by the 1.3 CDTi engine were particularly unpopular with retail buyers, who account for the majority of the hatchback’s customers. In 2017, just 0.5% of Corsa retail purchases were of the diesel.

This fits with a trend in the new car market; diesel sales have fallen by more than a third in recent months due to growing uncertainty and the new diesel tax hike.

A spokesman told Autocar that this low demand made the diesel Corsa too costly to retain amid the British brand’s ongoing efficiency-boosting measures. Vauxhall's new parent company, the PSA Group, is rolling out several measures to boost its profitability.

This is also the explanation given for Vauxhall’s decision to streamline the Corsa's trim levels. The Ford Fiesta rival had been offered with 11 trims, but this now has been cut to seven: Active, Design, Energy, Sport, SRi Nav, SE Nav and SRi VX-Line Nav Black.

“This is something you’ll see happening across the entire Vauxhall range,” said the spokesman. “We won’t be offering a plethora of complicated and confusing trim levels. New cars coming out from here on will have simplified trim lists.”

Vauxhall’s cost-saving measures will also include a reduction in the number of franchise dealerships it has, like its European sister brand Opel. Vauxhall will terminate contracts with its 326 franchise locations across the UK and then offer new contracts to only the best-performing sites.

Vauxhall's sales tumbled to 195,000 units in 2017, a decrease of 22% on the year before. The Corsa has remained a strong seller in Britain, however, currently ranking as the fifth most popular car in 2018.

The model’s range-topping VXR hot hatch variant will soon be replaced by a new GSi model that mixes focused handling with a less potent 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine. This car is predicted to appeal to wider range of customers than the VXR.

Opel SA gives flagship Corsa Sport a (temporary) price cut

Opel South Africa has temporarily reduced the price of its flagship Corsa Sport 1,4T derivative, rendering it nearly R21 000 cheaper for the month of July 2018. The local distributor for the German brand has cut the price from R289 316 to R268 320, with the offer expiring at the end of the month.

As a reminder, the Corsa Sport employs a peppy 1,4-litre turbopetrol worth 110 kW and 220 N.m, linked to a six-speed manual gearbox. This, of course, matches the output of the Corsa GSi unveiled for Europe earlier in 2018.

In SA, the Corsa Sport sits at the summit of a four-strong line-up and boasts a fairly lengthy standard equipment list, which includes the likes of a subtle body kit, a seven-inch touchscreen system, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a power sunroof, 17-inch alloys, sports suspension and an array of safety kit (such as blind spot alert and a self-parking function).

In June 2018, the Corsa again proved Opel SA’s most popular model range, accounting for 66 out of the brand’s 186 registrations in the passenger vehicle market.

Of course, the current Corsa won’t be around for too much longer, with the Rüsselsheim-based brand earlier confirming that the next-generation version of the hatchback would be produced exclusively at the Zaragoza plant in Spain, from 2019. This upcoming sixth-generation Corsa will run on the PSA Group’s EMP1 architecture, which it will share with the likes of the Peugeot 208 and Citroën C3.

I am dissapointed, it still looks same old, I just don't like the nose, was hoping for something different.

True, it does share a from the old one. But consider this, when VW makes a new Polo they claim that a much bigger percentage is "all new" yet when Opel did the Corsa they did not use as many "all new" parts yet the car looks more different from the previous one than the current Polo does from the previous one.

Opel Corsa 1.4 Turbo Sport (2018) Quick Review

Verdict

There is much to admire about the Corsa Sport – it still looks attractive and the cabin is loaded with features and is generally a nice place to be. It's also clearly a very well made car, and the warranty/service plan is appealing. However, we don't think the engine delivers a combination of performance and efficiency that is in tune with current consumer trends, and the suspension refinement clearly lags the best cars in this class. It's simply time for a new model.

That said, Opel frequently offers special deals on this model which significantly adds to its showroom appeal, given that the specification level is so high. In that scenario, it does offer a lot of car for the money.
