Oh dear. Talk about swallowing a company's PR.

Let's see...

Slightly greater range: Porsche +1
Significantly faster charging time: Porsche +5
Slower than a Model S: -2
Earliest possible production date, if at all, is 2019, by which time Tesla would likely have surpassed most, if not all, advantages Porsche has: -100

Yeah, Telsa killer alright.

Also, Tesla already has a large supercharger network established. This Porsche concept uses 800V, so they will need custom charging stations, or an adapter for normal 110V/220V, which will charge a lot slower.

Tesla is to cars what Chrome was/is browsers since 2008. After Chrome entered the market, all major browsers improved drastically.

Porsche is clearly responding to Tesla, which is great. In my books, Telsa succeeded.

Porsche's Tesla rival on course for 2019

Stuttgart, Germany - Porsche pushing ahead with its answer to the Tesla Model S, recently announcing that it would boost the number of jobs created by its first all-electric model by more than half from previous targets.

The new car, due in 2019, will be a production version of the Mission E concept, and it'll be blindingly quick too, with a projected 0-100km/h acceleration time of under 3.5 seconds, while managing a range of over 500km on a single charge under more efficient driving conditions.

The project is part of Volkswagen's push to overcome its emissions scandal by embracing zero-emission cars and digital services. Porsche will build the battery car at its Zuffenhausen base and in addition to the 1400 jobs it creates, another 350 digital experts are to be hired at a Porsche unit specifically set up to develop mobility concepts and uncover new business areas.

The Mission E implies a sea change at Porsche, it labour boss Uwe Hueck told reporters at a briefing on Tuesday. "You either take part in the digital change or you lose."

Although Porsche is attracting more than 140 000 job applications per year and tops various employer rankings, the manufacturer is struggling to attract the sort of smart brains also being wooed by rival carmakers, suppliers and IT firms.

"I'm not denying that the battle for talent is tough," human resources chief Andreas Haffner said, noting plans to expand the digital unit to Silicon Valley and China.

Hueck declined to specify production targets for the Mission E, but said Porsche needs to sell at least 10 000 of a model per year to make a profit.

Porsche prefers to use battery technology from Stuttgart-based Robert Bosch GmbH and would handle final assembly of the battery systems, said Hueck, who sits on VW's supervisory board.

VW Chief Executive Matthias Mueller has said Wolfsburg-based VW is weighing plans to start its own battery production as part of the group's repositioning, with an engine plant in Salzgitter and a component factory in Braunschweig vying for electric-car orders.

Porsche Mission E on course for 2020 launch

Development for the all-electric Porsche Mission E is on track after new pictures of a mule suggest on road testing has begun.

The Tesla Model S rivalling model was given a production green light last year and tentatively set to go on sale in 2020 by Porsche, and these pictures suggest that arrival date is a realistic one.

The model has already earned itself an internal codename of J1. It has been conceived to sit on a bespoke platform designed to accommodate a lithium ion battery pack capable of providing the car with a range of more than 330 miles. In combination with two electric motors, the sleek four-door promises a 0-62mph time of just 3.5sec.

The new platform is said to be separate to the structure being developed by parent company Volkswagen for its new range of electric cars, which includes a production version of the Budd-E concept seen last month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Heading development of the zero-emissions Porsche is Stefan Weckbach, who previously led product strategy and more recently was responsible for the development of the Boxster.

Porsche Mission E-SUV due in early 2020s

Porsche is testing an SUV-coupé model, understood to be a second electric model to sit alongside a production version of the Mission E concept.

Such a move reflects an internal roadmap leaked last year, which identified an electric SUV-esque model as the second zero-emission car for the brand’s electric line-up.

While Autocar sources have confirmed there is no official greenlight for the project, the economies of scale achieved with the Mission E mean there is a strong chance it will get the go ahead – and shortly.

It is expected to make production early in the next decade, and we expect the recent images of the car testing will first manifest themselves publicly as a Mission E-SUV concept. However, that concept is unlikely until at least 2018.

While some reports have called it a Cayenne coupé, insiders say it is not necessarily linked to the popular SUV model, although it could share certain chassis components.

Design and engineering-wise, it’s thought to be a mixture of the Mission E and sibling firm Audi’s Q6 e-tron Quattro, which is due in 2018. While Porsche’s electric vehicles are set to use two electric motors, Audi is opting for three, which would be more commensurate with the Porsche SUV’s size.

The concept Q6 used power from three motors – one mounted up front, sending drive to the front wheels, and the remaining two sited at the rear, acting on the rear wheels – and a similar set-up is expected in the final model. However, both car maker’s platforms support four-wheel drive.

Porsche has already confirmed the production version of its Mission E concept, and a mule was recently spotted testing on the roads, suggesting it is on course for a 2020 launch.

The Stuttgart car maker faces tough competition in the electric SUV market, with Jaguar Land Rover rumoured to be building an electric SUV model, while the Volkswagen Group rivalry between Porsche and Audi means this car will directly compete with the Q6 e-tron quattro.

Porsche to pioneer EV rapid-charging network

Porsche is in talks with rivals to develop a global network of rapid-charging points on motorway routes, which is seen as crucial for the success of its upcoming Mission-E

Porsche has been tasked with taking the lead within the Volkswagen Group on the development of rapid charging for electric vehicles. An effective network of fast-chargers is seen as integral to the success of Porsche's forthcoming Mission-E electric vehicle.

Rather than create a charging network that can be used by only other electric cars from the VW Group, Porsche is in discussion with rival manufacturers over the creation of a global network of rapid-charging points on motorway routes.

The move is part of the VW Group’s 'Together – Strategy 2025', in which each company within the group is taking responsibility for an important area of future business development. It is hoped that the rapid-charger network will help to facilitate long-distance road travel by EV in the future.

Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume said: “Porsche is leading the fast-charging topic and that includes to not only talk with the other brands in the VW Group but also to talk with other car manufacturers and suppliers. It is not only a local thing to think about England or Germany, but to think globally, so [that means talking to] the most important companies in Europe, North America and Asia.

“It will be important to the success of electromobility that you have a good charging network where you don’t have to wait two or three hours to charge your car. I think 15 minutes is a good time when you are taking a break on the motorway.”

Blume admitted that agreeing upon and implementing a global standard for rapid-charging was a huge task: “On the one hand, it is not so easy to find partners but everybody has got the same need for the future and that’s what is pushing the process forward. The other point is that each country is different. You have different partners and a different structure. It is a very complex thing that we are doing, but there is a real need for it.”

When the Mission-E was first announced, Porsche said it will use a revolutionary 800V charger unit that is capable of recharging the lithium ion batteries to 80% of capacity in just 15 minutes.

Blume said the fast-charging network will be in place by the time the Mission-E, which will have a 310-mile range, goes on sale. “It will be there," he said. "We will start from the first moment with these technical features when the car comes at the end of the decade.”

He added that Porsche and its partners are confident they have a “very clear technical standard” and there is “agreement that all car manufacturers in the future will use the same standard”.

The 800V system would outperform Tesla’s Supercharger, currently billed by its manufacturer as “the world’s fastest-charging station” and capable of offering an 80% charge in 30 minutes. Existing Tesla owners would be able to use the new chargers via adapters, Blume said, and the door was open for the US car maker to join the ongoing development project.

Porsche has now settled on the Mission-E’s final design. It is said to be very close to the concept shown in 2015, with some minor tweaks for the purposes of safety regulations and packaging. The next phase of development, Blume said, is “working with a lot of concepts in order to achieve at the end all the typical Porsche features like dynamics and range”.

Porsche Mission E on course for 2020 launch

Porsche's all-electric Tesla Model S rival is scheduled to go on sale in three years; new spy shots suggest development is on track

Development of the electric Porsche Mission E is well underway, as evidenced by pictures of a Panamera-based car testing in the Arctic Circle.

The Tesla Model S-rivalling model, which is referred to as J1 internally and nicknamed Pajun (Panamera Junior) by the media, was given the green light for production in 2015 and is set to go on sale in 2020.

It has been conceived to sit on a bespoke platform designed to accommodate a lithium ion battery pack capable of providing the car with a range of more than 330 miles. In combination with two electric motors, the sleek four-door promises a 0-62mph time of just 3.5sec.

The new platform is said to be separate to the structure being developed by parent company Volkswagen for its new range of electric cars, which includes a production version of the Budd-E concept first seen last year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

This week's Mission E test car has exhaust pipes, but they are likely left on due to the fact the body is borrowed from a Panamera. The lack of dirt on them supports that they're not functional.

Heading development of the zero-emissions Porsche is Stefan Weckbach, who previously led product strategy and more recently was responsible for the development of the Boxster.

Porsche Mission E: electric car to have wide range of variants

Porsche chairman Oliver Blume reveals Stuttgart car maker's plans to produce several versions of its electric model following a launch in 2019

The upcoming Porsche Mission E will be sold in a number of different model variants with differing power outputs in a move mirroring that of the German car maker’s more traditional combustion engine models, company chairman Oliver Blume has said.

Set to become the first fully electric Porsche production model when it goes on sale towards the end of 2019, the new four-seater will also feature state-of-the-art electronics permitting over-the-air updates to key systems such as the driveline and autonomous driving functions.

Speaking to Autocar at last week’s Geneva motor show, Blume said: “The Mission E will sit in the segment below the Panamera. It will offer a 500km (311 mile) eletric range, with a 15 minute charge time.”

Of plans for the model range, he added: “We will think of different options. There will be more than one, with different levels of power.”

Blume also revealed that Porsche is working on providing the Mission E with software that will allow over-the-air updates like those pioneered by Tesla with its Model S. “It will be possible to work with over-the-air options,” he said. “It isn’t decided yet, but it could be possible to charge up with more power. For example, when you have 400bhp, it could be possible to upgrade to 450bhp."

Blume’s comments indicate Porsche is planning the Mission E as a complete line-up of models with differing performance levels similar to the strategy undertaken with its current 718 Boxster/Cayman, 911, Panamera, Macan and Cayenne model ranges.

Initial performance claims for the earlier 590bhp Mission E concept made by Porsche suggested it would be capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in less than 3.5sec.

Porsche Mission E seen with production body for first time

Porsche's all-electric rival to the Tesla Model S is scheduled to go on sale in less than three years; new spy shots suggest development is on track

This is the first sighting of a Porsche Mission E wearing near-production bodywork - and it suggests the final car will look largely unchanged from the concept it is inspired by.

Photographed outside Porsche’s research and development centre in Weissach, on the outskirts of Stuttgart, the car can be seen sporting exhaust tailpipes, but these are fake and fitted to conceal the car's identity.

Previous Mission E sightings, shown in the gallery, were of a Panamera-based chassis mule testing in the Arctic Circle. The development for the car is being headed by Stefan Weckbach, who previously led product strategy and more recently was responsible for the development of the Boxster.

The future Tesla Model S rival sits on one of three new electric car platforms being developed within Porsche's parent company, the Volkswagen Group. This J1 structure is described as being different in construction to the C-BEV platform planned to underpin sister company Audi’s forthcoming production version of its E-tron quattro SUV concept.

“The J1 has a low floor, while the C-BEV is constructed differently with a higher floor that suits an SUV,” said company chairman Oliver Blume.

Despite the differences in their construction, Blume also confirmed that the production versions of the Mission E and E-tron will feature similar lithium ion battery technology.

The Mission E's battery pack is capable of providing the car with a range of more than 330 miles. In combination with two electric motors, the sleek four-door promises 590bhp and a 0-62mph time of just 3.5sec. The production car will stick with the 800V charging system used on the Mission E concept.

Details remain scarce, but Porsche is rumoured to be working with Japanese electronics company Hitachi on the system, which Blume describes as the key to providing the batteries of the production Mission E with an 80% charge in just 15 minutes.

Blume also confirmed that Porsche plans for the Mission E to have Level 4 autonomous driving technology (self-driving in nearly all situations, with driver attention not required), but denied that it would allow fully autonomous driving over longer distances. “There are situations in traffic jams where you will be able to read a newspaper, but our customers take pleasure from driving and this will remain,” he said.

Additionally, Porsche is working on providing the Mission E with software that will allow over-the-air updates such as those pioneered by Tesla with its Model S. “It will be possible to work with over-the-air options,” said Blume. “It isn’t decided yet, but it could be possible to charge up with more power. For example, when you have 400bhp, it could be possible to upgrade to 450bhp."

Porsche Mission E to get advanced autonomous technology and active aerodynamics

Porsche's all-electric rival to the Tesla Model S is scheduled to go on sale in less than three years; new spy shots suggest development is on track

The Porsche Mission E has been spotted again wearing near-production bodywork - and it suggests the final car will look largely unchanged from the concept it is inspired by, and receive autonomous technology and active aerodynamics.

Photographed on the Nürburgring, the car can be seen sporting exhaust tailpipes, but these are fake and fitted to conceal the car's identity. More notable is the panel of autonomous sensors in the nose, nestled between what appear to be two sets of louvres in the lower grille. Although in the closed position, it's clear that these can be opened to allow battery and brake cooling.

Previous Mission E sightings, shown in the gallery, were of a Panamera-based chassis mule testing in the Arctic Circle. The development for the car is being headed by Stefan Weckbach, who previously led product strategy and more recently was responsible for the development of the Boxster.

Electric Porsche Mission E readies for 2020 launch

The first tests of Porsche's first pure electric car are complete; the four-door sports car will be Porsche's fifth model line

Porsche has conducted the first successful tests of full prototype versions of its new four-door electric sports-car-cum-saloon, which is due in production by the end of the decade.

The car, codenamed J1, was closely previewed as the Porsche Mission E concept at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show. It will be Porsche’s first bespoke electric car and launched as a fifth model line.

Although many other car makers are choosing SUVs as their first electric cars for packaging reasons, Porsche has opted for a more low-slung model to showcase that its electric car technology is as much about performance as it is about reducing emissions.

Porsche R&D boss Michael Steiner confirmed that design work on the model is now complete and very close to the well-received Mission E concept. Development mules have completed testing and Porsche has begun tests of full-body prototype versions of the production car.

The finished product will be revealed in 2019, with first deliveries in 2020, and priced at approximately £100,000. That pitches the car in between the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid (£81,141) and Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (£137,140).

The Mission E has yet to be given an official name for production but it will not take the name of the concept car, according to Porsche boss Oliver Blume. It is pitched as halfway between a 911 and a Panamera in concept. Indeed, Porsche insiders refer to it as a “four-door sports car”, with Porsche keen to use electric technology on a completely new type of model to bring the brand to more customers.

Steiner said the brief is “a really sporty sports car, a four-seater that’s low on the road, with a low centre of gravity. A car that’s typically Porsche but electric.”

The Mission E is the first step towards Porsche electrifying its entire range as part of a Volkswagen Group target of 2030 to have an electrified version of every model offered.

Porsche has no plans to create an electric version of the 911 because the only way to store enough batteries for a viable range would be in the floor. That would mean having to raise the vehicle, rendering it no longer a sports car in the firm’s eyes.

70 years of Porsche sports cars

Fast, puristic, emotive... for 70 years, the Porsche brand has been synonymous with sports car construction at the highest level.

The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born.

The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. "His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day," said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, at yesterday’s New Year Reception at the Porsche Museum.

Representatives from the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as from the city of Stuttgart and the worlds of politics, economics and society, joined Porsche to celebrate the beginning of its anniversary year with the slogan '70 years of the Porsche sports car'.

"Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today," explained Blume. "We plan to uphold the standard of technical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate – even in another 70 years."

The history of the Porsche brand begins in 1948. Yet the foundation of the sports car manufacturer is built upon the life’s work of Professor Ferdinand Porsche – work which his son Ferry then continued. Ferdinand Porsche had already designed pioneering innovations for the automotive industry as early as the start of the last century.

In 1900, he built an electric car with a wheel hub drive known as the Lohner-Porsche, a vehicle on which he would then base the world’s first all-wheel-drive passenger car. In the same year, he created a template for hybrid vehicles with the development of a mixed petrol-electric powertrain. In 1931, Ferdinand Porsche founded his own engineering office. The “Berlin-Rome Car” showcased in 1939 was the beginning of his idea for a sports car bearing the Porsche name, although this dream was only realised by his son Ferry in 1948 with the Type 356.

The successor model to the 356, the Porsche 911 designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective. The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times.

"Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new, innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911," says Blume. "All Porsche models to be developed now and in the future are based on this sports car. As the centrepiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world."

The future of Porsche sports cars is already coming up to the starting line in the form of the Mission E, the first purely electrically driven technology champion from Zuffenhausen. This concept vehicle combines the distinctive emotional design of a Porsche, exceptional driving performance and forward-thinking everyday functionality.

The four-door model with four individual seats delivers a system performance of over 440kW and a range of more than 500km, acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in less than 3.5 seconds and a charging time of around 15 minutes for 80% of the electrical energy required. Porsche has invested around one billion euro in this futuristic project, creating more than 1200 additional jobs just at the headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, where the Mission E will be built. “Porsche will always be Porsche – the leading brand for exclusive, sporty mobility”, reinforces Blume.

Porsche is celebrating this year’s anniversary with numerous activities around the world. On February 3 'The Porsche Effect' will open at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. In Germany, the first “70 years of the Porsche sports car” exhibition will open from March 20–31, at “DRIVE, the Volkswagen Group Forum” in Berlin. The Porsche Museum will also be holding its own anniversary celebrations with a comprehensive special exhibition opening on June 9.

On the same day, Porsche will be inviting sports car fans to its “Sports Car Together Day” at all of its sites around the world. For the weekend of June 16–17, the sports car manufacturer will host employees, residents of the Zuffenhausen district and prospective customers to a public celebration in and around the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. The 'Festival of Speed' held from July 12–15, at the Goodwood race track in the UK will also celebrate the anniversary, as will the “Rennsport Reunion” in California from September 27–30. The celebrations will conclude with the “Sound Night” event to be held for the first time in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart on October 13.
