"Alpine unveiled the Alpine Vision show car. Marrying elegance, agility and authenticity, this mid-engined two-seater coupé is in every respect a true Alpine. The Alpine Vision heralds the style and performance of the road-going sports car that will be revealed before the end of 2016. Manufactured in Dieppe, France, the upcoming model will go on sale from 2017, initially in Europe and subsequently across the rest of the world.

Alpine has chosen the roads visited by the Rallye Monte-Carlo and, more specifically, the famous and twisty Col de Turini - the scene of its most celebrated early sporting achievements - as the backdrop for its renaissance. Alpine is back to carve out a clear niche in the premium sports car market, promising an invigorating experience to both aficionados and those who appreciate automotive beauty.

In a return to its roots, Alpine has chosen the roads visited by the Rallye Monte-Carlo in the southern French Alps to celebrate its return. These mountains - which gave the brand its name - have naturally influenced the style of the Alpine Vision show car. The pleasure of owning and driving an Alpine has always stemmed from the fact that the marque makes a point of covering all the bases. The Alpine Vision is a mid-engined, two-seater sports coupé which incorporates all of the expected hallmarks in a thoroughly contemporary package. Its design hints at what drivers can expect to experience behind the wheel of an Alpine-badged sports car:

The exhilaration and thrill of driving an Alpine,
The agility of a lightweight, elegant design that focuses firmly on the essentials,
The authenticity of a sports car that follows in a long line of illustrious Alpine models.
Alpine promises to enhance every part of the experience, and the forthcoming road-going model will continue to bear this hallmark."

Looks good but would prefer if it stayed true to it's roots and was rear, rather than mid-engined...

Anyone else noticed that it looks a bit like a Porsche Cayman from the from and I can see a bit of Lotus Evora at the back

The car was looking good at Goodwood festival. A bit like a Porsche on the road, but with lots of promise.

It was revealed earlier this year that the Renault Alpine Vision Concept was destined to become a reality as a mid-engine sports coupe. This is more-or-less the first official video we’ve seen from the Alpine division which showcases its latest version of the A120 in a series of skid-pad drift shots.

With a turbocharged 1,8-litre four-cylinder engine developing around 185 kW and 225 kW for a sportier variant, the Alpine 120 hopes to place itself as a direct competitor to the Alfa Romeo 4C and Porsche 718 Cayman.

The Premiere Edition envisioned above is said to be limited to 1 955 units at a price of €55 000 each (R811 106) which desired customers can pre-order with a R30 000 deposit through a special app.

This launch edition will only be available in Europe and then extend to the English and Japanese markets.

Alpine A120 sports car due in March at Geneva motor show

Renault’s upcoming mid-engined sports car looks on course to debut in Geneva as Alpine is confirmed as an exhibitor

Renault's Alpine A120 looks on course to make its public debut at the Geneva motor show this March, as Alpine has been confirmed as an exhibitor for the event

Alpine has released two teaser images of the upcoming A120, confirming that the new coupé will feature a bespoke aluminium monocoque construction.

The automaker says the reward for this extensive use of aluminium is “a significant weight saving and a high-quality finish”.

According to British magazine Autocar, the Renault-backed brand will first release as many as 1955 (a reference to the year in which Alpine founder Jean Rédélé first established the brand) “Premier Edition” models in 12 countries, before the A120 becomes available in right-hand-drive markets.

The Alpine A120 will reportedly make use of a mid-mounted 186 kW 1,8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels, derived from Renault’s 1,6-litre turbo-four, as used in the Clio RS. Following this, rumours suggest that the range will be extended to include a 224 kW version.

It is estimated that the A120 will weigh around 1000 kg, and be capable of hitting 100 km/h from standstill in a respectable 4,5 seconds. If these numbers prove accurate, the A120 would find itself matched up against the likes of the Porsche 718 Cayman.

When will we see the production model? Well, an introduction at Geneva in March seems likely, since Alpine earlier stated that delivery to customers was scheduled to start from late 2017.

Renault Alpine sportscar on the cards for SA

It appears that Renault South Africa has been selected as one of the lucky few markets that will receive an allocation of the upcoming Alpine sportscar.

Renault resurrected the iconic Alpine brand in 2012 with design exercises such as the A110-50 and Vision Concept. The upcoming production Alpine Sportscar doesn’t have a name yet but is rumoured to be labelled the A120. This naming follows on from the iconic A110 of the ‘60s, a car which is the design inspiration for the modern rebith. The new ‘A120’ will look quite similar to the Vision Concept once revealed officially later this year.

The iconic Alpine brand will be reborn soon. The design inspiration is unmissable.

The news, as told to us by Renault South Africa, is that “we are one of the identified markets to launch this product, however Alpine is in the very early stages of local planning.” Extremely limited numbers will be brought to SA as the whole first ‘Premiere Edition’ run consists of just 1 955 cars. The number signifies the founding year and first production of Alpine.

The Alpine A120 would make for an interesting addition to the niche/limited edition sportscar segment. Currently, the Alfa 4C commands a large price tag in SA but that might change when something like the Alpine joins the fray. If performance figures are anything to go by, the French Sportscar could be an excellent match. The Alpine runs an aluminium chassis and panels with weight reduction overall featuring high on the priority list during the sportscar’s development. There are loads of small touches and throwbacks to the original car such as the obvious front foglights and nose ridge. The less subtle ones include a chronograph style stopwatch on the dash that harks back to the Alpine rally car.

Performance figures have already been released. The 4-cylinder turbocharged engine sits in the middle of the car and pushes it to 100 kph in 4.5 seconds. No power figures have been released but it’s likely the Renault Clio RS 1.6-litre engine will do the graft in the Alpine. There’s a shift-by-wire system for the gearshift paddles, which allows for more space along the transmission tunnel – something many sportscars neglect.

The interior looks to be far more luxurious than a lightweight sportscar is usually adorned with – stitched leather meets Alcantara and brushed aluminium. The digital instrument cluster can be configured by the driver and there’s even an option to display the old school dials as they were in the A110 rally car.

According to the chief designer Antony Villain this Vision Concept you see in the images above is 80 per cent of what the final car will look like. He notes that items such as the super thin wing mirrors and fancy touch sensitive door handles will be replaced by more ‘everyday’ units.

In all likelihood, the Alpine (possibly to be called A120) will only make it to SA in 2018. Orders are open to Europeans at the cost of around 60 000 Euros. A basic estimate would mean a local price somewhere between R800 000 and R1 million.
