2017 Honda Civic Type R spotted testing in the US
Weeks after the Type R concept was unveiled, an undisguised prototype has been seen running in public
A 2017 Honda Civic Type R prototype has been spotted testing in the US just weeks after the covers were pulled off a concept (pictured bottom) in Paris.
The car, which was caught on video in California, can be seen completely undisguised, showing its trio of exhaust exits, wide arches, squared-off panels and 20in alloy wheels, suggesting that little, if anything, will change from the original concept.
The new Civic Type R will arrive next year powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, an evolved version of the current car’s unit with outputs ramped up beyond that model’s 306bhp and 295lb ft.
Something in the region of 340bhp has been mooted, making the car a close rival to the Ford Focus RS. However, unlike the all-wheel-drive Ford, the next Type R will retain a front-wheel-drive layout.
The 2017 arrival of this car means Honda has been quicker than usual to replace its Type R model. Previously, the hot Civic has arrived later in a model’s lifecycle, but Honda is understood to be moving the Type R’s launch forward to meet demand and allow a longer sales window.
Honda said the new Type R will be made alongside the regular Civic at its Swindon factory. It will be exported to global markets including the US - marking the first time the Type R has been sold in North America.
An insider said the future model's starting price will slightly increase on the current Type R's £30,000. It will also be offered with a GT trim level, like the current car.

Next-gen Honda Civic Type R to gain an automatic CVT?
Honda recently revealed images of its Civic Type R Concept without providing any technical details. A recent post on the CivicX forums, however suggests that the next Type R will be available with an optional CVT.
Their information is credited to Car Magazine UK’s November issue, in which an interview conducted with head engineer Mirsuru Kariya, the lead designer Tsutamori and head of Honda Europe Katsushi Inoue was featured.
Other details confirm a front-mounted LSD, an even lower centre of gravity, front-wheel drive only system and a standard six-speed manual transmission.
The optional CVT will be optimised for low-end acceleration. Rumours such as all-wheel drive and dual-clutch transmissions have been denied.
Certain rumours suggest that it will make use of the current turbocharged 2,0-litre engine which will be boosted up to 239 kW.
It’s most likely that we will learn even more about the Type R at Geneva this March.

The next Type R hot hatchback will make its debut in production form next month; it was previewed with a concept last year
The next Honda Civic Type R will be launched in production form at the Geneva motor show next month.
Previewed in concept form at last year's Paris motor show (pictured), the finished model will enter production at Honda's Swindon plant this summer, with sales expected to kick off in Britain in September.
The future model will be the first Type R sold in the US market, and is being built to set a new benchmark for front-wheel-drive performance cars.
A new Nürburgring lap record will be part of its target list, meaning the model will have to be faster than the current fastest front-driven car, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S, and forthcoming rival, the 2018 Renault Mégane RS.
Honda kept technical details of the concept close to its chest at Paris, but Autocar understands that the Type-R will remain front-drive in a class that’s increasingly dominated by all-wheel drive models.
Honda will rely on the new Civic’s wider chassis to improve grip and handling stability, along with a new aerodynamic package, including two rear spoilers and a front splitter.

"We have a lot more downforce from the design and aero package," the Type-R’s chief designer Daisuke Tsutamori told Autocar at Paris. Tsutamori’s design features an unusual front-end design with airflow into the engine bay split between three vents – a conventional lower vent, a narrow central grille and slot-like upper grille.
The area of the central grille is reduced by the Honda badge, but also functions as part of the Type-R’s ped-pro crash impact hardware.
Tsutamori stressed that the car shown at Paris was a prototype, but also admitted that "it was as close to the production car as possible".
"The difference between the current Type-R and the new one is that the new one has been designed in from the start of the programme," said Honda’s UK managing director Phil Crossman.
As a result it can utilise the new Civic’s multi-link rear axle. The outgoing model had to be converted from the Civic’s standard twist-beam to a new multi-link, eating-up engineering time and resources.
Styling features on the concept include wider air vents than the regular Civic, smoked LED headlights and a new air intake on the bonnnet. New skirts made from carbon fibre help to give the car a more aggressive look, alongside 20in alloy wheels shod with Continental SportContact 6 tyres and flared wheel arches. At the back, there's a new fixed spoiler and three exhaust outlets.
Power is expected to rise, although the exact output remains unclear. One source said that the outgoing Civic, which features a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 306bhp, represented the "absolute minimum" for the next car's performance.
Honda says the future model will slightly increase on the current Type R's £30,000 starting price. It will be offered with a GT trim-level like the current car.
The current Civic Type R was launched in 2015, and competes against the Ford Focus RS, Audi RS3 Sportback, VW Golf R and Mercedes-AMG A45, all of which are all-wheel drive. A final Black Edition was recently launched.
Honda UK expect to sell around 1000 Type Rs a year – about the same as the outgoing Type-R. The current Type R, a halo product for Honda alongside the NSX supercar, currently accounts for 4% of Civic sales.

This wild-looking thing is the prototype version of the Honda Civic Type R. The prototype offers a glimpse into the future of the Type R brand and the new Civic Type R will be shown at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in production form before going on sale in markets around the world.
The prototype you see here is based on the new Honda Civic hatchback and it has gained numerous go-faster visual bits. The wings and aerodynamic kit aren't just for show and will aid the Honda Civic Type R in terms of handling and grip. The paint job is unique and is a highly reflective wth a finely-grained brushed aluminium-effect finish. Note the bonnet scoop which will provide cooling air into the engine bay.
While there's no official word on engine and transmission, we predict that the new Honda Civic Type R will use a modified version of the current 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor. It currently pushes out 228 kW and 400 Nm, but we reckon that'll be upped considerably to keep pace with its rivals.
The production Civic Type R will be manufactured at Honda's UK plant in Swindon with sales expected to kick off during the second half of 2017. This is great news as the United Kingdom is a right-hand drive market, meaning its highly likely we'll see this monster coming to South Africa. Honda fans in the United States of America are particularly excited as this new Civic Type R has been confirmed for sale in that region, making it the first time any Honda-badged Type R will be sold there.
