Should I buy one?

As unlikely as this may have seemed 10 years ago, this could be Jaguar’s last throw of the dice with a classic mid-sized saloon. It has simplified and streamlined the XF’s line-up as much as it can, to take both cost of production and complexity out - and with some success.

At the same time, it has clearly done its utmost to put refinement, sophistication and luxury feel back into this car and has worked effectively there, too. You do get a sense that it may all be so that they’re able to stand back and say “we gave it our best shot, you know”, when the last old-school Jaguar four-door rolls off the Castle Bromwich production a few years from now. I suppose only time will tell.

Clearly, Jaguar can’t hold back the tide of change in the new car market, much as it may be able to take a slightly bigger slice of a pie that’s shrinking with every year that passes. With this revised XF, it certainly deserves to do that much. And with its replacement, sad as it may seem, less traditional thinking is clearly what’s required.

We all know now that Jaguars will be completely EV designs from 2025, but that shouldn’t really be a concern for you here. At just over £40,000, the XF Sportbrake P250 is impressive value for money, especially since it appears to be built very well indeed. It will surely be healthy and happy on the road many years beyond 2025.

On the other hand, if you would prefer one of the next-generation Jaguars, you could hardly do better than to choose one of these on a PCP or PCH finance plan and be ready to swap when the time is right. Jaguar will be hoping for customers like you.

Jaguar's XE and XF are now available in range-topping R-Dynamic Black specification, bringing bespoke design elements, added equipment and improved connectivity.

The Jaguar XF will gain the package for the first time with prices starting at £37,535, while the Jaguar XE will receive an improved Black specification, from £33,470. The F-Pace also got a Black Pack earlier this month, following the F-Type, E-Pace and I-Pace.

The firm says the models offer “an even more confident, assured and purposeful presence”, with an “unrivalled balance of outstanding ride, handling, refinement and luxury together with a focused range of powerful, efficient and electrified powertrains".

Both models are powered by Jaguar’s 201bhp mild-hybrid diesel engine, with the XE capable of 0-62mph in 5.6sec and the XF 5.8sec, with economy of up to 58.9mpg.

A panoramic roof, privacy glass and black 19in wheels with red brake calipers all feature. Both saloons are fitted with darker-coloured interiors with light seats and bright metal pedals. The firm says additional equipment options are not available for the R-Dynamic Black specification level.

The two models are equipped with Jaguar’s Pivi Pro infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and will also benefit from over-the-air software updates in the future.

Stealthy looks for Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Black

It’s based on the Jaguar XF R-Dynamic S derivative but adds a range of unique features that give it a distinct look. Fitted with a Black Pack, unique features include a gloss black finish for mirror caps, side sills, grille, grille surround, window surrounds, fender vents and rear badges. A panoramic roof is standard as is privacy glass. A full range of body colours are offered for the XF R-Dynamic Black.

The XF R-Dynamic Black rides on 19-inch gloss black wheels with red brake callipers.

As for the interior, the Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Black is fitted with Satin Charcoal Ash veneers and bright metal pedals as well as Premium Cabin Lighting which provides a total of 30 colours to choose from. As far as infotainment is concerned, the Pivi Pro infotainment system does offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard but Jaguar will soon offer wireless app connectivity via a Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) update.

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine offers 147 kW and 430 Nm of torque while the 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine develops 184 kW and 365 Nm of torque.

The Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Black trim has been introduced to South Africa as a more visually appealing option for the executive sedan. Together with this, an array of new options has been added to the catalogue to make it a more appealing product.

Like the package added to the F-Pace, the Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Black trim includes gloss black finishes to the door mirror caps, side sills, grille, side window surrounds, fender vents and rear badges. Standard kit includes privacy glass and a panoramic roof, red brake callipers and 19-inch gloss black wheels in ‘Style 5106’.

Within the cabin, Satin Charcoal Ash veneers and while bright metal pedals create a more premium setting. This is further by the enhanced Premium Cabin Lighting feature which offers a choice of 30 colours in place of the previous 10. The Pivi Pro system is fitted as well, with an array of apps and Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionalities. Optionally available too, is the PM2,5 filtration which captures ultrafine airborne particles and allergens. Wireless connection for Apple Car Play will be added to the system via an over-the-air update.

The Jaguar XF R-Dynamic Black is available with two engine options. Starting the range off at R1 122 000 before CO2 tax is the D200 turbodiesel 2,0-litre four-cylinder which produces 147 kW and 430 N.m of torque. The P250 at R1 118 600 before CO2 tax employs the firm’s turbopetrol 2,0-litre four-cylinder unit with an output of 184 kW and 365 N.m. Power from both of these engines are transmitted to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics.

Jaguar has announced a new trim grade for its XF midsize saloon. These new R-Dynamic Black models come with the kind of design enhancements that the name implies, as well as ushering in a few infotainment upgrades.

To that end, Jaguar XF models will soon be available with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which will become available in an over-the-air software update.

The R-Dynamic Black, meanwhile, joins the line-up with a unique exterior and interior styling package. On the outside, the new trim grade is distinguished by Gloss Black treatment for the 19-inch alloy wheels as well as for the grille, mirror caps, side sills, fender vents, window surrounds and rear badges. The brake calipers provide a dash of contrasting red and customers can also look forward to a panoramic roof and privacy glass.

Nearly new buying guide: Jaguar XF​

Less than £11,000 is enough to buy a roomy and luxurious Mk2 XF. Tempted?

The XF saloon under the microscope here plays the evolutionary card better even than a BMW 5 Series, being almost indistinguishable from the original XF of 2008-15 that preceded it. Look harder, though, and under its stylish body it marks a genuinely new chapter in the model’s story.

Its aluminium-rich structure is lighter and stronger, its engines are a new generation of powerplants named Ingenium, the cabin is roomier and it features smarter infotainment and better materials.

Prices for the first 2015-registered cars open at around £12,500 for the lowest-powered diesel, the 161bhp 2.0-litre, with around 60,000 miles. If mileage isn’t a worry, you can buy cheaper still, with a 112,000-mile 2016-reg example we found costing just £10,800.

That’s from an independent dealer, by the way. At the time of writing, the cheapest official Jaguar approved used XF was a 2014-reg 2.2 TD, a Mk1 model, with 50,000 miles for £12,500.

Jaguar’s latest-generation XF sedan came to market in 2016 to rival products such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Now, the updated Jaguar XF has landed in SA and will be going up against some stiff competition in the segment.

Updated Jaguar XF Engine Power

The updated Jaguar XF will be offered a choice of 2 petrol engines and a new, more powerful turbodiesel engine from Jaguar’s Ingenium engine range. All XF’s are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Useful driver assistance technology includes Clear Exit Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control and a 3D Surround Camera.

The 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine choices include a 183 kW/365 Nm engine offered in rear-wheel-drive guise while the more powerful 221 kW/400 Nm engine will be offered with all-wheel-drive.

As for the new 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine, it offers some 15 kW more than the outgoing 132 kW version and it offers outputs of 147 kW and 430 Nm.

The South African market gets petrol and diesel powertrains, and for the first time, an all-wheel-drive derivative.

Sticking to conventions: Mercedes C-Class vs saloon rivals

EVs may be the future, but the fossil-fuelled compact executive still matters. We pitch the latest C-Class against the BMW and Jaguar alternatives

The new C-Class, on the other hand, was always unlikely to beat either of these cars for driver appeal, even though it does have youth on its side. But it’s more telling to us that Mercedes’ long-established strong suits aren’t better represented in this latest-generation version. Simply put, this car ought to be better. Quieter, more practical, better built, slicker and easier to operate and to drive. Perhaps other versions will do better on some of those scores, but this certainly isn’t the best first impression.

Are clever LED headlights, built-in music streaming services and over-the-air software updates really what Mercedes thinks we want from our luxury cars, I wonder. Because from where I’m sitting, the assured aura of tank-like comfort and quality-first, old-school Benz would have been a much better fit for the mood of these uncertain times.

Jaguar has upgraded the XF Sportbrake yet also reduced its price, dropping the estate down into BMW 3 Series and Skoda Superb territory. We ask if it’s too good to be true

Ultimately, however, it’s the estate as a concept that’s the real victor here, these three serving as a powerful reminder that such cars can turn their wheels to almost anything. So make sure you take a long hard look before committing to an SUV.

Jaguar used to sell cars under the strapline ‘Grace, pace and space’. With this elegant, engaging and versatile XF Sportbrake, it has revived those values.

2nd: BMW 320d Touring M Sport

The priciest here and feels it. Exquisitely engineered, the BMW is also the most involving. Yet it’s the least effective estate here.

3rd: Skoda Superb Estate

The roomiest and cheapest to buy and run. Good to drive, too, but doesn’t have dynamic depth and lacks character in this company.

Models become latest Jaguars to get performance-inspired range toppers

The Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF have become the latest models in the firm’s range to receive a Sport variant with uprated performance, bespoke design features and Amazon Alexa connectivity.

Both come with the existing most powerful engine: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit producing 296bhp and 309lb ft. For the Jaguar XF Sportbrake and saloon, 0-62mph is achievable in 5.8sec, while the XE completes the same sprint in 5.6sec. The top speed for both models is pegged at 155mph.

Jaguar claims a combined economy figure of 58.9mpg for the XE and 57.6mpg for the XF saloon.

The two 300 Sport models also benefit from Jaguar’s Black Pack, which includes a gloss black contrasting roof and privacy glass. They also gain 20in alloy wheels that can be specified in either grey or silver.

On top of Jaguar’s standard range of colours, two premium exterior paints – Carpathian Grey and Silicon Silver - can be selected.

Inside, the XF and XE feature aluminium and ash-coloured veneers, along with metal gearshift paddles and pedals.
