"So it is one for the ladies then?
I think we can safely say that. The Mini guy certainly did at the press briefing. And the ladies did appear to like the last generation with some 165 700 units worldwide between 2009 and 2015. Of that number, 1 015 were sold in South Africa. That said, this is the only convertible in the premium hatch section, so some of the lads may opt for this over the similarly priced two-seater Mazda MX-5."

WTH? This over the glorious MX-5? Not a chance.

Fair enough, MX-5 master race, but the Mini is less likely to have a waiting list to grab one.

(or I've just been going to the wrong Mazda stealerships)

The Mini Cooper Convertible range starts at R389 000 for the manual, while the automatic retails for R407 456. Prices include a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Mini SA adds limited ‘Caribbean Aqua’ Cooper hatch

Mini South Africa has launched a new special edition version of its three-door Cooper hatchback, complete with special Caribbean Aqua paintwork.

Just 29 units will be offered locally, with the unique colour scheme and a handful of extra features coming standard.

The Caribbean Aqua paint job with black accents was previously exclusive to the Mini Convertible (an option at R2 500), but is now offered for the special edition hatch as well. This new variant also gains 17-inch Cosmos Spoke Silver light alloy wheels as standard.

Inside, the special edition model adopts a piano black interior (with added chrome accents), anthracite headliner, an armrest and automatic air-conditioning. The Mini Connected phone integration is also included in the package.

The special edition will be available only in Cooper guise, and not in Cooper S form. That means it is powered by a 1,5-litre turbo-triple pushing out 100 kW and 220 N.m of torque.

So, how much does it cost? Well, the limited edition Mini is priced at R399 000, which includes a five-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

That’s some R29 000 more than the base three-door Mini Cooper Hatch in self-shifting guise. However, if you spec up this car with exactly the same options (albeit substituting the unavailable Caribbean Aqua paint for R2 500 worth of Electric Blue Metallic) on the online configurator, you’ll find that the total amount comes to R393 950…

Mini Cooper S Convertible Automatic (2018) Quick Review

Pricing and warranty

This Mini Cooper S Convertible is priced from R493 710 and is sold with a 2-year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km warranty. You can go to town on options but be aware that the overall price will compound quickly, so pick your options carefully. This test unit comes in at over R550 000 with options, which is a rather tall order.

Verdict

Barring its cute looks and punchy engine, this Cooper S Convertible is difficult to recommend. It purports to be a drop-top version of its genuinely sporty Cooper S hatchback sibling, but due to its compromised body structure, it simply fails to deliver the same level of sporty ability. Sure, it performs reasonably well in a straight line, but it ultimately lacks composed, sure-footed handling ability. Therefore, in our opinion, it's not a “sporty” drop-top city car, just a mediocre one.

To make matters worse, the Mini's ride quality is generally too unforgiving and it's not very practical either, both in terms of rear passenger space and storage space. So, in essence, all this Mini Cooper S Convertible has going for it is its visual appeal, engine performance and the perceived allure of driving a convertible Mini.

Is there any way it could justify its price tag? Logic says no, but it will depend on your requirements... After all, some new cars are sheer heart-over-head propositions. So, if looking cool and hip as you cruise past the trendiest spots is what you are after, then the Mini Cooper S Convertible might pass this test, but only just. Consider a more affordable, moderately specified Cooper Convertible is you cannot resist the Mini wind-in-the-hair experience. Alternatively, if you can live without the indulgence of a folding fabric roof, but want engaging driving dynamics in a pugnacious compact package, simply buy the Cooper S hatchback. It will be far more pleasing to drive...
