So Opel SA advised that the new Corsa OPC
is "under consideration for SA but they cannot confirm date at this stage."

Sad if it happens... But on the plus side... Means my shape will be the "latest shape" OPC in SA. Ensuring its resale doesn't tank too much.

its a bit of a shame, that its not much of an improvement power wise from the current Xhosa...

and i hope to hell that the Astra OPC isnt a 1.6 as well.

having said that, it does look nice and have some nice finishings.

all we really want from Opel now is an AWD system and a decent limited Slip Diff, on some of their new cars. if that doesnt happen, as much as i love the brand, cant see myself buying another OPC.

True, Astra K engine bay can't take anything bigger than 1.6.

Yet that is all they need to come out tops and put some hypercars to shame.

Roux not hyper that's a bit much. We know opc's are fast in a straight line but they don't transcend time and space.

Astra G OPC can actually time travel... just saying. And it beats an A8 (in some aspects)

Opel rejigs Corsa range … and cuts prices (slightly)

Opel South Africa (which will have a new official distributor locally from January 2018) has revised its Corsa line-up, resulting in what it describes as “improved specifications” for some derivatives as well as marginal price drops across the range. Sadly, though, there is still no mention of an OPC-badged flagship.

The range has been pared back from five variants to four, with the entry-level Essentia model now featuring a 1,0-litre three-cylinder engine in 66 kW/170 N.m guise and mated to a six-speed manual (the outgoing base model had the full 85 kW output).

This revised model comes in at R200 600 and, with the radio/Bluetooth/USB/air conditioner optional package fitted, this figures rises to R210 600, which Opel SA says represents a cut of R4 000 on the final dealer floor price.

Next up are two Enjoy models; one in six-speed manual and the other in six-speed automatic form. As before, the manual is the 85 kW version of the turbo-triple, while the two-pedal version is equipped with the 66 kW/130 N.m 1,4-litre naturally aspirated four-pot.

Enjoy derivatives lose front foglamps and LED daytime running lights from their standard specification lists, but gain the IntelliLink infotainment system as well as tyre-pressure monitoring. Another notable change is the adoption of a single-piece rather than a 60/40 split rear seat. Pricing falls slightly from R234 800 to R234 300 for the manual and from R235 100 to R234 800 for the self-shifter. As we said, marginal.

The Cosmo derivative, meanwhile, has been scrapped altogether, leaving the Corsa Sport again sitting at the summit of the local range. This variant still employs a peppy 1,4-litre turbopetrol worth 110 kW/220 N.m, linked to a six-speed manual.

Inside, though, Opel says this model has “inherited the look and feel of the Cosmo”, gaining a chrome beltline and door handle accents. The Corsa Sport also now features “more voluminous seats” with fresh upholstery, a sunroof, tyre-pressure monitoring, park assist and side blind spot alert. The price falls slightly from R276 200 to R275 600.

As before, the Corsa range features a five-year/120 000 km warranty and a three-year/60 000 km service plan.

Pricing:

Opel Corsa 1,0T Essentia: R200 600
Opel Corsa 1,0T Enjoy: R234 300
Opel Corsa 1,4 Enjoy Auto: R234 800
Opel Corsa 1,4T Sport: R275 600

Vauxhall Corsa GSi returns as driver-focused VXR replacement

Sporty new three-door Vauxhall goes on sale this summer at around £19k

Vauxhall will apply its revived GSi tag to a new driver-focused version of the Corsa. It will be the second GSi model in its current line-up after the recently launched Insignia GSi.

Due on sale in the summer as a rival to the Ford Fiesta ST-Line, the Corsa GSi borrows key chassis hardware and geometry from the Corsa VXR to give it sharper handling than other Corsas. It uses the standard VXR’s firmer springs, dampers and uprated brakes.

Although it’s unconfirmed, the Corsa GSi is expected to follow the pattern set by the Insignia GSi and use the most potent engine on offer beneath the VXR, which has a 202bhp 1.6-litre unit. So the most likely candidate is the 1.4-litre four-cylinder that supplies the Corsa White and Black Editions with 148bhp. That engine can accelerate those models from zero to 62mph in 8.9sec, suggesting the Corsa GSi will be neck and neck with the 138bhp Fiesta ST-Line.

To be sold exclusively in three-door form, the Corsa GSi has larger air intakes, a honeycomb grille and side skirts taken from the VXR. There is also a rear spoiler that generates downforce and 18in VXR wheels. The interior features leather Recaro seats, a leather sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals. As standard, its infotainment system comes with a 7.0in screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Corsa GSi is expected to cost from about £19,000.

The Corsa VXR (OPC) will be discontinued as part of Vauxhall plans to push GSi as its main, albeit more subtle, performance arm.
