The infotainment/media system display in my Golf R is completely and permanently off (just over 2 full weeks now). In other words, the media screen located in the centre console is black and unusable. Herewith some information about the issue:

1. Obviously this means that I have no radio, no rear-view camera, etc etc.

2. The small display located in my console directly above the steering wheel is functioning fine, but it obviously cannot connect to the infotainment system as this is down.

3. I have taken the vehicle into two separate VW dealerships and they do not know what the issue is. They connected their diagnostic tools but could not connect to the infotainment system as apparently there is no power at all to the media screen. There is however power to the CD player located in the cubby-hole. Fuses and connections are all fine apparently.

4. I have noticed that if I hold down the power-on button located to the left of the media display for about 10 seconds, it tries to restart the system and the lights on the buttons on either side of the screen turn on. The screen however remains completely black.

5. I’ve tried a few suggestions I’ve come across online, including certain pushing buttons and switching the car on/off repeatedly. No joy.

6. I do not believe this issue is as a result of anything I have done. I have not attempted any after-market physical or software upgrades of any kind nor have I tampered with any aspects of the vehicle. The system was working fine when I switched my vehicle off and when I turned the vehicle on the next morning, the screen was dead. The vehicle has 12000km on the clock after two years and I am OCD in caring for it. I bought it brand new.

The current feedback that I have is that the dealership has sent all logs/info they can to VWSA and are awaiting for a response from them on how to proceed. Apparently neither dealer has seen this before?

To say this issue is frustrating is an understatement. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping there is a VW techie or someone else who has experienced this before who can offer some insight. Thanks in advance! :)

Sounds like the infotainment Gateway chippie to the canbus is buggered.

If the dashboard section still communicated with it I would have said maybe just the backlight or something had died.

But this being a 2016 this is a warranty problem so what are you doing on the Internet about it?

This isn’t a “we don’t know” problem. This is a simple we order a new one and replace everything problem.

And that statement should be the end of this thread.......? I don't understand why you are trying to diagnose the issue if it's under warranty???

Sleep peacefully. Goodbye.

This. Take you car back and tell them to change the unit.

Which dealerships are you dealing with?

Thanks for the quick replies all.

Now before we all get out our pitchforks, let me clarify....

Yes, obviously it's a warranty issue. Obviously I will insist it gets fixed. We're not quite at the point where I need to get stroppy with VW.

I don't place a particularly large amount of trust in one of the two dealerships visited, so I'd like to get my own independent advice. It's incredibly frustrating to not get anything concrete from the dealers and I thought I'd do some homework whilst waiting for VWSA to respond.

I was also hoping that there may be a "quick fix" that I could do to avoid me having to take the car back. At the very least, if I could get some useful information to point the dealers in the right direction, it would benefit me in getting the issue resolved sooner (perhaps without VWSA's input).

I also actually want to know what the problem is. Thanks for the idea re. the canbus chip SauRoNZA.

Hope that clears it up.

I have had a Porsche Cayman 2014 model and had a similar issue. And being vag I would not be surprised if it is caused by the same thing.

My display would go completely off. And only after a few attempts of starting the car would it come back on

Issue was a particular mp3 I was trying to play ... It was the file length and that strangely enough made the unit go dead. Weird. But it definitely was an mp3 file format in my case
