"The New Alfa Romeo Mito debuted at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The model is reasserting itself in many ways, while maintaining its position as small sports car capable of winning over customers attracted by its Italian style and technical excellence offering maximum driving satisfaction in total safety.

Sold across Europe from the second half of the year and targeting a young, dynamic clientele, the New Mito revamped its looks by presenting an unprecedented grille and a strong family resemblance to the captivating Giulia. Additionally, after débuting on the Giulia, the refreshed brand logo and new name lettering are affixed to the compact Alfa Romeo for the first time.

An additional affinity with the Giulia model is range rationalisation. The line-up now includes three trim levels (Mito, Super and Veloce) and two specific packs (Veloce and Lusso).

Nine body colours, including the brand-new pastel white, and no fewer than eight different alloy wheels (including three new 16", 17" and 18" patterns),complete a line-up that will allow customers to pick the version of the New Mito most suited to their inclinations and needs. Additionally, depending on the trim levels and on the country of purchase, specific packs are available (Style, Comfort and Visibility) that group together the most popular equipment, for significant savings.

There are news in terms of engine versions too, with the unprecedented 95 HP 1.3 MultiJet which stands out for its brilliant temperament, high fuel economy and low emissions. All this without compromising on performance: 180 km/h top speed and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds. The extensive line-up is thus supplemented, already featuring the 78 HP 1.4-litre engine, the 140 HP or 170 HP 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo petrol engines (both with TCT automatic transmission), the 105 HP 0.9-litre Turbo TwinAir and the 120 HP 1.4-litre LPG Turbo."

Looks nice. I don't see it in the article, is it based on the Fiat Punto again?
 
I had two as company cars, and apart from nauseatingly horrific TCT gearboxes, they were super to drive - provided you were on a twisty road or a freeway, and didn't have to use the gearbox.

Unfortunately, I could not get them into my garage without scraping the bottom of the front bumper - drove me nuts - and then trying to reverse out of he garage with the gearbox trying to do everything that it shouldn't was a nightmare from hell!

Thank God, I didn't spend my own money, as anyone actually spending good cash on the auto would probably commit suicide within a month....

The manual is very nice to drive, however, until you try and park it in my garage... ;)
 
The Alfa Romeo Mito has been updated, and is now on sale in the UK.

The Mito, which is now the oldest car in the Alfa Romeo line-up, has been given a styling refresh, including new grilles, revised rear bumpers and new alloy wheel designs.

Under the bonnet, the 1.3-litre JTDM-2 diesel engine has been updated to provide improved performance and lower CO2 emissions; Alfa claims 94bhp and 89g/km for the engine.

The specs of the Mito have been updated, too; some trim levels on the car now match those of the Giulietta and Giulia, with the entry-level trim taking no name but the model name, followed by Super, Speciale and Veloce.

The entry-level car now gets a driving mode selector and a 5.0in touchscreen infotainment display with Bluetooth and DAB radio as standard.

Alfa’s range-topping Quadrifoglio Verde trim on the Mito has been replaced by Veloce. This leaves a space at the top end of the range for an Audi S1-rivalling Mito Quadrifoglio, as the brand continues to push its performance-oriented Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models, the latter of which will be revealed at the Paris motor show.

The hottest version of the Mito is the 168bhp, £20,500 Veloce 1.4 Multiair. When equipped with Alfa’s paddle-operated TCT transmission, the car gets to 62mph in 7.3sec, on the way to 136mph; that's only 0.4sec and 3mph slower than a Ford Fiesta ST, although the Mito is more than £2600 more expensive.

A full-fat Quadrifoglio hot hatch would be positioned closer to an Audi S1 in terms of price and performance, although it’s unclear if this is on the cards; there’s no Quadrifoglio-badged Giulietta.

The car’s name badge now bears the same script as the Giulia and Giulietta too, suggesting that Alfa is trying to make its range more cohesive.

The new Mito now starts from £12,960, and is already available to order. Range-topping Veloce trim starts at £17,110 with the two-cylinder 875cc Twinair engine.

Alfa Romeo Mito to be axed in early 2019

The Alfa Romeo Mito will be canned early next year as the brand makes way for a new era of SUVs and sports cars, Europe boss Roberta Zerbi has confirmed.

In June, Alfa Romeo’s parent company, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, laid out a five-year plan for the Italian maker, which includes two new SUVs, a range-topping 8C sports car and a modern-day GTV, a four- seat coupé. The Mito did not feature in the plans but no more details were given.

Now, Zerbi has confirmed to Autocar that it will be withdrawn from sale by early next year. “Mito is a three-door and people are choosing more and more five-door cars,” she said.

Zerbi added that previous buyers of the Mito would hopefully migrate into the Giulia or upcoming small SUV, which will sit below the Stelvio in its range.

She said the small SUV was the upcoming model she was most excited about: “This is the one that will allow us to talk to a wider audience, a younger audience of 30- to 40-year-olds.

“It can help fill the gap between the Giulietta and Stelvio. And people that bought a Mito in the last couple of years – people grow up, start having children [and need a bigger car].”

Zerbi confirmed that it won’t look like a smaller Stelvio, in the vein of Audi and its Russian-doll SUV styling, saying it will “look like a family [of cars]”.

She would not confirm when the small SUV will be launched but we expect to see it in the next two years.

Alfa Romeo pulling plug on ill-conceived Mito

Alfa Romeo is set to pull the plug on its smallest car.

Roberta Zerbi, who head’s the company’s European arm, has told Autocar that the Mito hatchback would be discontinued internationally early next year (it's already been taken off the South African market), largely due to the market for three-door cars having waned considerably.

Yet given that the market for five-door hatches has always been a considerable size, one must wonder why Alfa Romeo never developed a five-door version of the Mito in the first place?

A more practical body style - which could still have looked pleasing to the eye as the 147 aptly illustrates - would certainly have widened its appeal.

Dare we say that weak styling, particularly at the front end, did the Mito few favours either.

Done correctly, the Mito might have lured a more youthful audience to the Alfa Romeo brand, who could then have graduated to flashier and more profitable models further down the line.

New SUVs, sports cars on the way

On that note, Alfa Romeo is planning to get a bigger slice of the lucrative SUV pie, with a more compact SUV that will slot - price-wise - between the Giulietta hatchback and Stelvio SUV.

Thankfully, the revered Italian marque isn’t forgetting about the kinds of vehicles that made it great, and plans to launch a new GTV coupe (based on the Giulia and with up to 440kW) as well as a redesigned carbon-fibre bodied 8C in the coming years.

These form part of the brand’s five-year new model strategy that was announced back in June.

Oh, and those who prefer traditional hatchbacks will be getting an upgraded Giulietta, apparently.

Weird, I had a Mito many years back (when they first came out), didnt have this issue.
