PRICING! NEW AUDI A5 CABRIOLET (PLUS S5) ARRIVES IN SA

Audi South Africa has officially added the new A5 Cabriolet to its local line-up, with the soft-top joining the Coupé and Sportback models in the range. And, as expected, the S5 Cabriolet tops the line-up, boasting a 3,0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine worth 260 kW and 500 N.m.

The new model’s roof, meanwhile, now features a one-touch function to open the soft-top fully in 15 seconds or close it in 18 seconds, at speeds up to 50 km/h.

The engine line-up kicks off with the familiar 2,0T FSI in 140 kW guise, while a 2,0T FSI boasting 185 kW is also on offer. The former comes in front-wheel-drive flavour only, while the latter is linked exclusively with quattro all-wheel drive. Both engines are offered in either Base or Sport specification.

Audi SA says a 2,0 TDI engine will arrive in SA “at a later stage”.

The S5 Cabriolet, meanwhile, sits at the very summit of the range, sprinting from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,1 seconds, before topping out at a limited 250 km/h. Every variant in the new A5 Cabriolet range employs a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, bar the S5 derivative, which uses an eight-speed Tiptronic.

All models feature Audi’s five-year/100 000 km “Freeway Plan” as standard.

Audi's A5 Cabrio is here, now hurry up summer!

The transition from Audi’s previous generation A5 range to the second generation version is nearing completion with the introduction of the all-new Cabriolet model in South Africa.

The A5 Cab follows the recent launches of the new Coupe and Sportback derivatives, with only some added engine options (including Porsche-powered RSs) still to come across the three body styles.

The ragtop A5 is available now with three engine and drivetrain choices - a 140kW/320Nm 2-litre turbo with front-wheel drive, a 185kW/370Nm 2-litre turbo with quattro all-wheel drive, and a range-topping (for now) S5 quattro with a 260kW/500Nm 3-litre turbo V6. Gearbox options include six-speed manual or seven-speed S tronic automatics in 2-litre models, while the S5 is sold with an eight-speed tiptronic only.

No performance figures have been quoted by Audi for the 2-litre variants, but the S5 comes with a 0-100km/h quote of 5.1 seconds and top speed is limited to the usual 250km/h.

Audi South Africa confirms a 2-litre turbodiesel will arrive at a later stage, and though it’s yet to be announced, we suspect a 330kW/600Nm RS5 Cabriolet will arrive in due course.

Like the previous version, the new Cabriolet gets a folding fabric top which opens in 15 seconds and closes in 18 while driving at speeds up to 50km/h. A new feature for this version is a one-touch function, allowing the roof to raise or lower without the need to hold the switch until the operation is complete.

The A5 Cab uses the same five-link front and rear suspension systems as the Coupe and Sportback, and because it shares the same larger platform front shoulder room increases by 26mm and rear leg room grows by 18mm. Cargo space is decent for a drop-top at a maximum 380 litres, or 320 with the roof retracted.

Audi also says this model’s chassis is 40 percent more torsionally rigid than the outgoing one, and is also the stiffest in its class. This class, by the way, includes BMW’s 4 Series and Merc’s C-Class convertibles.

Most of the Cabriolet’s optional features are also shared with Coupe and Sportback siblings, and include a new Stop&Go Traffic Jam Assist (adaptive cruise control) with radar following capability, Attention Assist to monitor a driver’s drowsiness levels, and Pre Sense City which automatically brakes if it detects a collision with other vehicles or pedestrians.

Of course Audi’s Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster is available here too, and when specced with MMI navigation plus a wifi hotspot for up to eight devices, Google Earth Navigation and Google Street View are unlocked. The A5 Cabriolet is also compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto smartphone pairing.

Base models come with 17” alloys, Xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, Dynamic suspension, Drive Select and a basic MMI Plus infotainment system among others, while Sport trim adds 18” wheels, Sport seats, a different front grille and bumper, and chrome tailpipes. The 185kW quattro gets further electric front seats and rear parking sensors.

Standard fare on the S5 quattro includes 19” alloys, LED headlights, dynamic (swooshing) indicators, Nappa leather upholstery, S Sport seats, S Sport suspension and a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel among other things.

Prices include Audi’s five-year/150 000km Freeway Plan.

The infotainment selector is aided by a nifty piece of ergonomic design: you can rest your wrist on the transmission lever handle while you browse the menus. Audi’s Matrix headlights, heated and cooled seats, automatic parking, Virtual Cockpit digital dashboard and adaptive suspension will make your life safer, smoother and infinitely more comfortable and some of these options are well worth the extra spend.

3. Big on safety

The new A5 Sportback has much to offer in terms of safety. There are extra-cost features such as Audi active lane-assist, Audi pre-sense, side assist, as well as City Assistance and parking assistance packages, but the standard car includes systems such as Audi pre-sense city, secondary collision brake assist, ABS with EBD, stability control and a plethora of airbags. The optional City Assistance package is worthwhile, which will add a self-parking system and a reverse camera, Audi side assist, rear-cross traffic assist, Audi pre sense and exit warning systems.

Verdict

Audi's critics say that the Ingolstadt-based marque's styling has become very formulaic, especially in terms of contemporary models' front-end designs. With the new Audi A5 however, things have taken a radical new direction and while most testers' initial opinions of the coupe were indifferent, the newcomer's styling has grown on us and represents a modern and fresh interpretation of Audi's design language. Things go from good to great when you step inside the cabin. Not only is it exquisitely finished, there's a sense of occasion and the latest technology is within reach.

On-the-road refinement is exceptional and you'll love just how comfortable the Audi A5 is, be it an open road journey for a weekend away or stuck in the 9-5 daily traffic grind. Despite it being a diesel, performance is brisk and there'll be no hesitation when it comes to overtaking slower traffic. It's brisk off the line and we were satisfied by the way it drove. While it is best to leave the car in fully automatic mode and let it do its thing, you can take over and have a pleasant hands-on driving experience. It's not going to set your pants on fire, nor was it intended to do so and Audi has products for that already in this lineup, but it'll deliver what is expected of it and a bit more.

We like the space and comfort of the new Audi A5, especially if you're not planning on having children. The boot is generous and when you fold the seats down, you can squeeze in a mountain bike. Just. We tried! Think of it this way, if you wanting something with a bit more style and personality than an A4, then get an A5 coupe. However if you wanting the best of both worlds, then best you look at the A5 Sportback, which blends both practicality and style with ease, which is why it is a #CarsAwards finalist.

Audi Drops Remaining Manuals In U.S. A4 and A5 Models

Some cars have been sold with a large metal shifting stick in the center console and a third foot lever intended to decouple engine power from the drivetrain. Very few people in the U.S. automotive buying market ever figured out what these strange pieces were intended for, and as a result never bought them.

Now, because the sales rate is so low—Audi told Car & Driver only 5 percent of A4 buyers worldwide chose a no-cost manual transmission option—the company is dropping the shifting stick from the A4 and A5 model line for the 2019 model year. This leaves Audi’s U.S. lineup devoid of any manual transmission options.

Americans, overwhelmingly, are choosing to have their car shift for them. Audi, seeing that trend, is more than happy to provide automatic gearbox cars for Americans to buy. My favorite small sports sedan, the S3, does not come with a manual option, even though it is essentially a VW Golf R (which does offer a manual) with a trunk. It, the various guises of TT, and the R8 would all be made better with a manual option, says I.

Audi knows that there is no fiscal point to offering a manual option for that scant 5 percent of buyers. For those of us who enjoy the lost art of driving a manual transmission, it’s a little bit sad to see the German sport-lux brand drop the option from their entire lineup. My daily driver is an Audi with a manual transmission.

Rest peacefully sweet manually-shifted Audi A4 and A5. You were unappreciated in your time, and have gone from your delicate existence far too soon. Your absence shall be mourned. The burden of your death shall weigh heavily upon each of us who chose not to buy while the option was ours to choose.

Audi S5 line-up to gain diesel V6 from SQ5 TDI?

A new report out of Germany suggests Audi is planning to drop a V6 diesel engine (as used in the recently revealed SQ5 TDI) into the three derivatives in its S5 range.

According to Automobile Magazine, the S5 Sportback, coupé and cabriolet will all be offered with Ingolstadt’s oil-burning six-cylinder, which also employs an electrically powered compressor to ensure maximum torque is available from low in the rev range.

In the case of the SQ5 TDI, this 3,0-litre engine makes 255 kW and 700 N.m, fed to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The French magazine says Audi’s motivation to use this new powertrain stems from an effort to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, with regulations in Europe continuing to tighten.

Of course, Audi Sport has so far offered diesel engines only in S-badged SUVs (the SQ5 TDI and SQ7 TDI). If this latest report does indeed turn out to be true, the S5 will be the first non-crossover in the performance range to adopt diesel power.

Audi S5 Coupe TDI

For the first time ever, the Audi S5 has a V6 diesel under the hood. The 3.0 TDI engine in the S5 Coupé and the S5 Sportback produces 255 kW (347 hp) and delivers up to 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft. An electric powered compressor provides for strong off-the-line performance; a mild hybrid system enhances efficiency. This combination of power, torque and efficiency makes the Audi S5 unique in its segment.

The 3.0 TDI engine: brawny torque

The 3.0 TDI in the S5 models is the most powerful version in the Audi V6 diesel engine lineup. Its combination of performance and efficiency sets it apart in this segment. Output is 255 kW (347 hp), and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque is available between 2,500 and 3,100 rpm. Despite significantly greater performance, NEDC consumption derived from the WLTP values for the Audi S5 Coupé TDI and the S5 Sportback TDI is just 6.2 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers (37.9 US mpg), a CO2 equivalent of 161 grams per kilometer (259.1 g/mi). The new S models consume on average 19 percent less fuel than their predecessors with gasoline engines despite producing significantly more torque.

The six-cylinder diesel engine accelerates the S5 Coupé in 4.8 seconds and the S5 Sportback in 4.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. The electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h (155.3 mph). With these characteristics, the V6 diesel engine is the ideal power plant for agility, spontaneity, low fuel consumption and long range. It also has a sporty sound and is very smooth.

The engine in the S TDI models features the electric powered compressor (EPC) and mild hybrid technology (MHEV). Both systems are embedded in the standard 48-volt main electrical system. For the first time in the S5 TDI, a powerful 48-volt belt alternator starter is the heart of the mild hybrid system with maximum recuperation power of up to 8 kW. A DC/DC converter steps this voltage down for components in the 12-volt electrical system. A compact, air-cooled lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 0.5 kWh installed under the luggage compartment floor serves as the energy center.

Audi S5 switches to 345bhp mild-hybrid diesel

New engine, shared with recently launched S6 and S7 models, offers more torque and better fuel economy

The Audi S5 will switch from a turbocharged V6 petrol engine to a 345bhp mild-hybrid V6 diesel.

The powertrain, which will be used in both the coupe and Sportback versions of the S5, is the same as that introduced on the latest S6 and S7 models. It combines a 3.0-litre TDI diesel with a 48V mild-hybrid system and electrically-powered compressor, and produces 516lb ft of torque between 2500 and 3100rpm.

The diesel engine allows the S5 coupe to achieve 0-62mph in 4.8secs, the five-door Sportback version being 0.1secs slower. Both models are electronically limited to 155mph.

The 3.0-litre petrol V6 previously used in the S5 had a slightly greater output with 349bhp, although, at 369lb ft, it produced significantly less torque. Audi also claims the new unit consumes 19 per cent less fuel than the previous petrol version, at a claimed 45.56 mpg. That figure was calculated on the NEDC test cycle, derived from WLTP values.

The S5 retains an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox, along with permanent all-wheel-drive and a self-locking centre differential.

The TDI-powered S5 will go on sale in Europe in May, with a starting price in Germany of €65,300 (£56,590). UK pricing has not yet been set.

The 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine will continue to be offered in the S5 in some markets outside of Europe.

Audi S5 handed 700 N.m TDI engine ... but not in South Africa

Following a similar move with the new S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback, Audi has handed its S5 Coupé and S5 Sportback a 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel heart in Europe. According to the local arm of the Ingolstadt-based firm, however, this oil-burning option is “currently not planned” for South Africa.

Instead, the local market will stick with the turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 TFSI unit, which offers a petrol-flavoured 260 kW and 500 N.m.

So, what are we missing out on? Well, the TDI engine produces 255 kW and 700 N.m, with an electric-powered compressor providing “strong off-the-line performance” and a mild-hybrid system enhancing efficiency.
