2017 Audi Q5 (2nd Generation)

DRIVEN: Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI Advanced Quattro S-Tronic

The Audi Q5 Sportback is a pleasant alternate addition available for consumers to select but elements of its design, both inside and out, do come across as a bit dated as it is essentially based on a model that was introduced to the global market four years ago. Regardless, it excels in terms of perceived quality and comfort and handling capabilities with a versatile turbodiesel powertrain.

The Audi Q5 Sportback range kicks off from R960 000 and goes up all the way to R1 355 000, for the flagship SQ5 derivate. The Q5 Sportback 40 TDI quattro S Line retails for exactly R1 000 000 and comes standard with a five-year/100 000 km Audi Freeway Plan.

Verdict

The Audi Q5 Sportback undoubtedly adds some visual appeal to the Q5 range and if you put the newcomer and standard model side-by-side, the Sportback steals the limelight. The good news is none of the traditional Audi Q5’s pillars of comfort, luxury and refinement have been lost in the creation of this variant; the bad news is that this means the Q5 Sportback is not different enough in execution.

So, should you buy one? Given that the standard Audi Q5 is an already accomplished offering, we feel the Q5 Sportback doesn’t offer enough other than its good looks to justify its price premium. Yes, the Sportback variant is the prettier and more interesting offering of the two – you’ll hear no argument from us, but vehicles aren’t just there to be looked at.

Logically, you should use the price difference between the two to configure a very nicely appointed Q5 with the same powertrain as our Sportback test unit, but, then again, the heart wants what it wants.

Nearly-new buying guide: Audi Q5

Why settle for ordinary when you can bag a classy SUV for less?

Posh SUVs: they’re everywhere. People love a premium badge, a high ride height and a dollop of road presence. And while entries into the class often home in on speed, space, style or otherwise, few combine all of the sought-after features of an SUV like the current Audi Q5.

For instance, its engine range is varied. The 249bhp 2.0-litre petrol (renamed 45 TFSI in 2019) is pretty punchy. The 187bhp 2.0 TDI (later 40 TDI), meanwhile, is flexible enough to deliver strong real-world economy and pace. Both engines come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox as standard.

For even more poke, there’s the 282bhp 3.0 TDI.It’s effortless in everyday driving, with enormous shove from low revs and a responsive eight-speed automatic gearbox.

There’s a high-performance SQ5 version, too. It initially came with a 349bhp 3.0-litre petrol before that was replaced by a 342bhp 3.0-litre diesel in 2019. Also that year, a plug-in hybrid arrived with a 14.1kWh battery and a combined power output of 362bhp from its electric motor and 2.0-litre petrol engine.

It's that easy: How quickly you can add R360k worth of optional extras to your Audi Q5

• The Audi Q5 is one of the most popular vehicles in its segment.

• The Q5 45 TFSI is priced at R947 000, but can be kitted with a host of optional extras.

• Our test unit had more than R350 000 worth of optional extras fitted.

In summary

Though we understand why Audi, along with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, go about business in this way, we can't help but feel that many of these items could be standard equipment. Satellite navigation, for instance, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, has become a common occurrence on most cars - even those retailing for under R250 000 - but on premium vehicles, it's sold as an additional add-on.

Audi already has one in the bag over BMW and Mercedes-Benz, with its vehicles being priced better, so the package can only be enhanced with more standard features.

TESTED: Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI is appealing in many ways, but pricey

VERDICT

To be frank, there is no obvious fault to be found in the Audi Q5 Sportback 40 TDI Quattro S Line Sportback except maybe that once you want some nice-to-haves, it adds the price of a small car to the bottom line.

The standard price is R1 006 000 and, as tested with options worth R193 600 that included the Technology Package (R33 000) and Comfort Package (R27 000), you’ll be paying R1 199 600.

Pritesh Ruthun | Has the Audi Q5 passed its sell-by date? I think it has, here's why

- For the price of this compact diesel SUV, you could also buy an all-electric premium one in South Africa.
- The sloping roofline adds character to the Q5 facelift, but it might be too little too late as e-tron takes over.
- Our R960 000 car turned into a R1 153 600 vehicle with options, and they didn't even tick all the boxes.

When we test drove the original Audi Q5 in 2009 during our first drive experience, the entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI with quattro all-wheel-drive cost R407 000 at launch. Recently, we got behind the wheel of the latest version of the vehicle, albeit in Sportback format, but still with a 2.0-litre four-pot oil-burner under the hood. Take a guess how much our test car cost with its bells and whistles...?

Nearly three times more. Yes, that's right, our 2022 Audi Q5 TDI Sportback came in at a cool R1 153 600, all tallied. It's a good car, let's get that out of the way, but if you take a closer look at it, it hasn't really changed since that first-generation model, so why on earth are we paying triple what we did for it only a decade ago?

All-new 2024 Audi Q5 spotted testing in the Alps

Audi's best-selling car gears up for a third generation with a bold new look and an evolved platform

A disguised prototype version of the new Audi Q5 has been spotted testing on mountain roads in the Alps, giving a clear indication of the model’s comprehensive redesign.

Set to be the third-generation version of Audi’s best-selling global model, the Q5 will also be one of the German car maker’s final ICE cars.

Pictured with a black and white camouflage livery obscuring much of its exterior design, the prototype features new taillights and a completely revised front end look suggest the Q5 will be brought more in line with its newer stablemates, including the electric E-tron models.

The totally overhauled front end resembles a clamshell-style bonnet, a shorter grille, sleek new headlights and new air-intake designs.

At the rear, meanwhile, the Q5 looks to have been modelled on the Audi Q4 E-tron, although the brake lights in situ here look to be temporary items for the purposes of testing.

The success of the Q5 peaked in 2021, with global sales soaring by 5.3% to 293,069 representing nearly a sixth of the four-brand Audi Group's total deliveries.

It remains vitally important for the German brand five years on from being launched in its current form.

Late, very late, to this thread, because I picked up a used low-mileage Matador Red '17 SQ5 2 weeks ago and it's by far the best fun I've had in a car, with my clothes on . Traded an F30 3 series 330i for it, and have zero regrets.
