2017 Audi R8 Spyder V10

Here’s how much the new Audi R8 Spyder costs in SA

Audi is preparing to launch the R8 Spyder in South Africa this month, and we’ve managed to lay our hands on pricing for the open-top version of the German supercar.

It’s been a long wait for local Spyder suitors, seeing as the second-generation coupé model hit SA shores as long ago as July 2016 (and the Spyder was revealed in New York back in March 2016), but the first units of the drop-top variant have already arrived in local dealers (with the official market launch set down for mid-May).

The Spyder will be offered with the same powertrain as the “base” (for want of a better word) R8, which means its naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10 will be good for 397 kW and 540 N.m. That leaves the 449 kW/560 N.m V10 Plus coupé as the big daddy in the local line-up.

The Ingolstadt-based automaker claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3,6 seconds for the Spyder (one-tenth slower than the base coupé), with top speed coming in at 318 km/h. An electro-hydraulic drive opens and closes the roof in 20 seconds, up to a speed of 50 km/h.

And the price? Well, the Audi R8 5,2 V10 Spyder quattro will start at R2 905 500, some R170 000 more expensive than the coupé on which it is based. The V10 Plus coupé, for the record, comes in at R3 089 000.

That is delectable!

Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus

The Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus from the workshop of Audi Sport GmbH is the fastest series-production convertible model from the brand with the four rings. Its unmistakable 610 hp V10 mid-engine offers intense driving performance and powers the quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The standard performance program, R8 bucket seats and many components made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer distinguish this high-performance sports car, with its exclusive micrommata green paint finish giving it an even more cutting-edge look.

"The Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus completes the R8 model line," said Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. "The Spyder is now also available as a 610 hp top version in addition to the Coupé. It benefits from our many years of experience in motorsport and combines breathtaking dynamics with the emotion of an open-top sports car."

The most powerful series-production engine from Audi: V10 mid-engine with 449 kW (610 hp)

Incredibly high revving up to 8,700 rpm, lightning-quick responsiveness and an awe-inspiring, voluminous sound - the V10 mid-engine is an object of fascination. With 449 kW (610 hp) and maximum torque of 560 Newton meters at 6,500 revolutions per minute, it is the most powerful series-production engine from the brand with the four rings. Compared with the Audi R8 Spyder V10, the naturally aspirated 5.2 FSI engine, with a high 12.7:1 compression ratio in the plus version, features a 52 kW (70 hp) boost in performance.

As a result, the top model sprints to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.3 seconds - 0.3 seconds faster - and achieves a top speed of 328 km/h (203.8 mph), an increase of 10 km/h (6.2 mph). Each hp only has to move 2.78 kilograms (6.1 lb).

In the NEDC, the Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus consumes 12.5 liters per 100 kilometers (18.8 US mpg), which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 292 grams per kilometer (469.9 g/mi). Its efficiency technologies include the cylinder on demand (COD) system, which deactivates one cylinder bank at low to medium loads, as well as dual injection in the intake manifold and combustion chambers. If the driver lets off the accelerator at a speed of over 55 km/h (34.2 mph), the engine disconnects from the drive - and the new R8 Spyder coasts at idle with minimal fuel consumption. When the car comes to a stop, a start-stop system deactivates the V10 engine.

The oil supply is designed according to the dry sump principle, like that of a racing car. This enables the engine to be positioned extremely low, giving the car an extremely low center of gravity - a requirement for the sporty and agile driving behavior.

Orders are now being accepted for the Audi R8 Spyder V10 plus, and the first cars will be delivered in late summer 2017. The base price in Germany is 207,500 euros (~R3mill).

Audi gives R8 Spyder the full-fat V10 Plus treatment...

Despite being revealed back in early 2016, the Audi R8 Spyder has only just arrived in South Africa (see pricing here). And now the Ingolstadt automaker has confirmed that the R8 Spyder V10 Plus will complete the line-up (although no word yet on whether this range-topper is destined for SA).

Billed as the fastest series-production convertible model from the brand, the V10 Plus model shares its 449 kW (52 kW over the standard V10 Spyder) 5,2-litre mid-engine with the flagship coupé model, sending drive to all four corners via a seven-speed S tronic transmission.

At a claimed 3,3 seconds, it’s three-tenths faster to 100 km/h than the standard V10 Spyder, and tops out at 328 km/h (up 10 km/h).

The German brand says it features “many components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer”, as well as an exclusive “micrommata green” paint finish.

Audi says orders are now being accepted for the Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus, with the base price in Germany coming in at €207 500 (the equivalent of about R2,97-million).

Faster Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus Revealed

Audi has unveiled a faster and more hardcore version of its R8 supercar. Imbued with the R8 V10 Plus coupe's powertrain and tech, the R8 Spyder V10 Plus is now the fastest convertible in the Audi family.

The standard Audi R8 Spyder has only just arrived on South African shores, yet Audi Germany has added more firepower to the Spyder and created the Spyder V10 Plus.

Power has increased and the 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10engine has gone from offering 397 kW and 540 Nm to a mental 449 kW and 560 Nm of torque, available from the 8 700 rpm redline. Audi claims its R8 Spyder V10 Plus shaves three-tenths off its non-Plus 0-100 kph sprint time, which means it'll take just 3.3 seconds. Top speed has increased too with a claimed figure of 328 kph.

The Audi Spyder V10 Plus is now the fastest convertible offered by Audi.

All that shove goes to a quattro all-wheel drive setup via a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. A clever torque distribution system can send up to 100% of the torque to one axle, should the situation arise. At 1 695 kg, the roof mechanism and body strengthening material add around 140 kg in weight, but importantly, it's 25 kg lighter than the standard Spyder V10.

R8 V10 plus is Audi's fastest open-top ever

Audi has announced a Plus version of its second generation R8 Spyder, which means you’ll soon be able to blow your hair back with full 449kW force.

Unlike the all-new R8 coupe, which launched in base 397kW and 449kW Plus versions simultaneously, the drop-top Spyder was introduced last year (last month in South Africa) in less powerful trim only. But it was only a matter of time before the mid-engined ragtop underwent the Plus treatment, and now the Spyder also comes with the same full cream 5.2-litre V10 as the range-topping tin-topper.

Total outputs are identical to the coupe’s at 449kW and 560Nm, and in Spyder form this means 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 328km/h. That’s three tenths quicker than the 397kW standard Spyder, and 10km/h better at the top end. It’s also just one tenth and 2km/h slower than the plus Coupe – mainly because the electronic roof mechanism adds around 100kg to total kerb weight.

The electrohydraulically operated retractable roof can raise or retract in 20 seconds, and there’s also a glass window partition at the back which can lower to allow a more direct path for the howl of a naturally aspirated 10-banger at 8700rpm to reach the cabin.

Like with the coupes, the Plus Spyder gets a fixed rear wing instead of the base model’s mechanised raising and lowering one – but here it’s a much subtler looking lip spoiler. The canvas roof comes in a choice of three colours, side blades in five, and regular paint finishes can be had in 11 shades. But, as usual with the Audi exclusive program, any colour can be applied if you’re willing to pay extra. Pictured here is the Micrommata design pack which combines an outrageously green body with a black interior accented with green stitching.

Mechanically the Plus Spyder is identical to the coupe, with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox powering all four wheels through a quattro drive system. The R8’s quattro setup can apportion 100 percent power to either front or rear axles depending on traction necessities, and the double wishbone Magnetic Ride suspension can be softened and tightened at the push of a button via the standard Drive Select system. Standard wheel size is 19 inches, but 20s can be specced optionally.

Audi South Africa cannot yet confirm when or if the R8 Spyder Plus will make it to our shores, but says its arrival is a strong probability. We’ll let you know as soon as we do.

Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus added to range

0-62mph comes in 3.3sec, and top speed is 203mph, making this the fastest Audi convertible yet

Audi has revealed the R8 Spyder V10 Plus as the final addition to its R8 supercar range.

The Plus has 69bhp and 15lb ft more than the standard R8 Spyder V10, giving it a total of 602bhp and 413b ft.

It's also 25kg lighter, thanks to the use of carbonfibre-reinforced plastic on its interior and exterior. The means the Plus weighs 1587kg, which is 167kg more than the Lamborghini Huracán Spyder and 83kg less than the Porsche 911 Turbo.

The Plus's increased power and decreased weight equate to a 0.3sec improvement 0-62mph time and 6mph increase in top speed over the regular V10 Spyder, at 3.3sec and 206mph.

The Plus is marked out by carbonfibre trim across the exterior in place of the standard car's gloss black trim. Its trapezoidal exhausts are also split into four separate pipes, in place of two larger, undivided pipes. The Plus also gets standard bucket seats and ceramic brakes.

Audi confirmed that no further variants on the R8 will be added to the range after the R8 Spyder V10 Plus, quelling speculation of a lightweight variant akin to the Huracán Performante.

The R8 V10 Spyder Plus is priced from £147,470, a £15,000 premium over the regular R8 V10 Spyder. Order books open at the end of this month, with first deliveries coming soon after.

R8 Spyder has a soundtrack to rock your world

When Audi served up its all-new second-generation R8 Coupe last year it did so with a double helping - both the 397kW normal version and the 449kW Plus were delivered at the same time.

But for the Spyder, which arrived just over a month ago, it’s easing us into open-air supercardom with only the less powerful model on the menu. For now. The Spyder Plus will come next year. Is it worth waiting for?

Unless three tenths at the dragstrip and a minuscule amount of longitudinal G-force under acceleration matter, then not at all. The 397kW Spyder may be considered an R8 “lite” but it’s certainly not lacking in performance or excitement departments.

That V10 at the back, even in its turned down state, still packs plenty of aural stimulus and, because this is a drop top, it offers an unrestricted path for one unfathomably beautiful (understatement) song to pour into ear canals.

The Spyder’s cloth top folds in 20 seconds and at driving speeds up to 50km/h, and when it’s tucked away this two-seater’s cabin becomes a golden circle at a heavy metal concert. With no sound-suppressing turbos to inhibit its 8700rpm vocal range, this 5.2-litre big block surely deserves a spot in the Naturally Aspirated Greatest Hits album. The Spyder’s back window also slides electronically into the bulkhead, offering frostbite-free access to the tunes on a winter’s day. Brilliant.

It’s no slouch either. If the Plus version didn’t exist it’s unlikely anyone would accuse this R8’s 397kW and 540Nm of any insufficiency, and with foot flat there’s plenty of pull on your neck muscles. Audi claims a sea level 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds (versus 3.3 in next year’s Plus) and a top speed of 318km/h, though I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near there with the roof down for fear of aggravating my already receding hairline. But how did it perform against our Vbox at Gauteng altitude? Watch our test runs in the video below:

Our test equipment showed a best 0-100km/h time of 4.16 seconds, which is understandable given the reef’s thin air and a lack of altitude compensators. It also covered the quarter mile in 12.35 seconds, matching the more powerful but heavier first generation R8 Plus’s time.

Like the Coupe there’s an aluminium and carbonfibre spaceframe hidden beneath the Spyder’s body, so the absence of a roof has had little effect on structural rigidity. Audi’s chassis engineers certainly didn’t have South African roads in mind when they set out designing this car, but even Gauteng’s most neglected surfaces (driven Hennops River Road lately?) failed to fluster the Spyder. Scuttle shake? Never heard of it.

A revised quattro drive system can now apportion all engine power to either front or rear axle depending on the driving situation, though it would take some seriously interesting conditions to prompt a fully front-wheel drive R8. But, get it into an angle where bias is sent rearward and the back diff locks up, and it’s possible to get some drift on. And that’s saying something considering quattro’s renowned understeery nature.

Our handling track at Gerotek is a short and relentlessly twisty circuit, but here the Spyder revelled in direction changes, tossing its rear end out on corner entries and banging apexes with a touch of opposite lock. It’s nowhere near as tail happy as a pure rear-driver, and it takes some skill to make countersteer happen, but the fact that a quattro car can get tail-playful is impressive indeed.

But the R8 can tone itself down to easy listening soft rock level too. I said it after testing the Coupe, and the same applies here. Dial the drive modes back to Comfort and switch off the active exhaust flaps (both accessible on the steering wheel) and this so-called supercar transforms into a genuine everyday driver. Well, an everyday driver that costs R2.9-million before options and has a pathetic 112 litre frunk (front trunk).

In softer settings there’s always a gentle rumble behind the seats and the suspension will constantly remind you it’s tuned more for lap times than sponging up potholes, but the R8, in either body style, is possibly the most easy to drive supercar, ever. Sure it’s firm when roads get rough, but expectedly and acceptably so.

VERDICT

The R8 Spyder seems immune to the compromise normally associated with hacking the roof of a sports car. There’s zero jiggle in the chassis when under pressure, its performance is worthy of its seriously saucy looks, and the best part is you can peel the lid back to get closer to the 10-cylinder symphony happening behind your head.

Wait for the Spyder Plus if you need a bit of extra shove, and can afford it. Otherwise, the regular version suffices nicely.

Audi R8 Spyder V10 Plus 2017 review

Should I buy one?

And that’s the nub of it. Drop-top supercars are so often bought on grounds of character before capability, and very few howl like the V10 Plus Spyder howls. It’s also disturbingly fast, extremely usable and can, if you’re feeling shy, go comparatively incognito.

The R8 Spyder V10 Plus is therefore a unique proposition – particularly when you consider that access to the only other engine quite as explosively endearing as this one comes attached to the £205,000 Lamborghini Huracán Spyder.
