2017 Audi S4 (B9)

Audi's new S4 arrives: SA specs and pricing

The new Audi S4 is that rarity in modern premium cars, a stand-alone model: despite a host of detail options to to help you push up the base price of R809 000, in essence, what you see is what you get.

Released in South Africa this week, the top dog of the A4 family comes with one engine, one transmission and quattro all-wheel drive.

But that engine is an all-new, direct-injection, three-litre turbopetrol V6 rated at 260kW and a muscular 500Nm from 1370-4500rpm, launching the S4 to 100km/h in a creditable 4.7 seconds and on to an electronically limited 250km/h.

The transmission is an eight-speed tiptronic with a wide spread of ratios - short, punchy lower gears for rapid response off the line and long upper gears for relaxed cruising. And if you lift your foot off the loud pedal anywhere between 55 and 160km/h it instantly defaults to freewheeling mode.

The quattro all-wheel drive is set up with a slight rear bias in normal driving, but on loose or slippery surfaces it can deliver the majority of the drive to the axle with better traction, while torque vectoring gently brakes the inside wheels for neutral handling in fast corners, and an (optional) active sports differential distributes torque between the rear wheels.

Five-link front and rear suspension for comfort without sacrificing precision is standard, as is electro mechanical power steering; dynamic steering, that varies the rack ratio with speed, is an option - as is red paint on the brake callipers, if you feel the standard black is boring.

Clean cabin

The uncluttered interior with its emphasis on horizontal lines is trimmed predominantly in black with matt brushed-aluminium trim elements, although the optional S sports seats with integrated head restraints, adjustable lateral supports and pneumatic massage function can be ordered with nappa leather upholstery in black, grey or red with diamond-pattern contrasting stitching.

While most A4 customers will likely opt for the 31cm virtual cockpit instrument display, using the ‘View’ button on the steering wheel to switch between the various interfaces - including a special sport mode with the rev-counter the dominant element - the standard analogue dashboard has also been upgraded and simplified to make its operation more intuitive.

The MMI control panel on the centre console has been revised; when the optional Navigation Plus with MMI Touch is installed, the rotary push-button control also has a touchpad for zooming and writing with ‘intelligent’ free-text search.

A built-in ‘phone box’ connects smartphones to the on-board antenna and at the same time charges them wirelessly to the Qi standard, while an optional 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system delivers 755 watts of 3D audio power.

Driver aids

Numerous driver aids can be found on the options list, including adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist and rear cross traffic assist.

Standard features in the S4 include automatic climate control, cruise control, comfort key, Alcantara/leather front sports seats, ambient lighting package, light and rain sensors and LED headlights and taillights among other items.

Audi S4 pricing starts at R809 000 and includes a five year or 100 000km maintenance plan.

New Audi S4 in SA (2017) Specs and Pricing

The sportier version of the Audi A4 has arrived in South Africa! Take a look at specification and pricing for the new Audi S4.

Perched at the top of the A4 range is the new S4. Featuring permanent quattro all-wheel drive, the S4 is powered by a redeveloped 3.0-litre V6 turbopetrol engine with 260 kW and 500 Nm of torque that allows for a zero 100 kph sprint time of 4.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is claimed at 7.3 L/100km.

Power is laid down using an 8-speed tiptronic transmission with short-ratio gears low down for sportier driving and longer ratios higher up to help achieve better fuel efficiency. A freewheeling mode kicks in when the driver releases the accelerator between speeds of 55 kph and 160 kph, which further aids efficiency.

The S4 offers torque vectoring to improve handling and stability while an active sport differential is available as an option as is dynamic steering which will vary the steering gear ration depending on speed. Stopping power is taken care of with 350 mm diameter front brakes with black 6-piston calipers or red calipers as an option.

Audi's new S4 now available in SA

With a new engine, intelligent lightweight design and a package of innovative technologies, the Audi S4 assumes a top position in the new A4 family.

Engine

Power is derived from the familiar 3.0 TFSI V6 capable of 260kW/500Nm.

Audi quotes a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.7 seconds for the S4 and up to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. In the NEDC cycle, the S4 Sedan only consumes 7.3l/100km.

The S4 is priced at R809 000 and is available to order now.

Quattro, as always, is standard

In the new S4, a fast and smoothly shifting eight-speed tiptronic handles the power transfer. Its lower gears have short, sporty ratios, while the upper gears are long to reduce revs and fuel consumption. When the driver releases the accelerator pedal at a speed between 55 and 160 km/h the automatic transmission switches over to an efficient freewheeling mode.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive makes a large contribution to the sporty handling of the S4 says Auddi. In normal driving, it distributes engine forces with a slight emphasis of the rear wheels - if necessary the majority of forces can be directed to the axle.

Torque vectoring optimizes handling and stability in fast cornering with minimal brake interventions. The optional sport differential actively distributes torque between the rear wheels.

An alternative to electromechanical power steering is dynamic steering which varies its steering gear ratio according to the driving speed. The front brakes have internally-vented discs that are 350mm in diameter. They are gripped by black (or optionally red) painted six-piston fixed calipers with S lettering.

Smatterings of brushed aluminum

The optional S sport seats have integrated head restraints, adjustable lateral supports and a pneumatic massage function. Nappa leather is optional in the colors black, rotor gray or magma red with diamond pattern, contrasting stitching and an S badge. The color black dominates in the interior, which is set off by contrasting inlays made of matt brushed aluminum.

Virtual cockpit

The optional Audi virtual cockpit, a fully digital instrument cluster, shows all key information on a 31cm display in brilliant resolution, a high level of detail and intricately rendered graphic effects.

The "View" button on the sport leather steering wheel with multifunction plus is used to switch between the different user interfaces. Three views are available, including an exclusive sport mode with the tachometer as the dominant element.

The main operating unit is the MMI control panel on the center console, which is also new. When MMI navigation plus with MMI touch is installed, the rotary push-button control has a touchpad for zooming on the map and entering characters.

Playing a central role here is adaptive cruise control (ACC) Stop&Go including traffic jam assist. ACC maintains a specified distance to the vehicle ahead. The driver can set this distance and the control dynamics over several stages. Its Stop&Go function brakes the car to a full stop and lets it start off again automatically at the driver's request. Over a speed range from 0 to 65km/h, traffic jam assist - another function of ACC - can also take over steering on well-built roads, as long as the traffic is moving slowly. The rear cross traffic assist, exit warning, turn assist, obstacle avoidance assist and Audi pre sense systems further enhance safety. The predictive efficiency assistant, unique in this vehicle class, helps by offering drivers situation-specific tips on how to save fuel.

Audi S4 quattro (2018) Quick Review

Pricing and warranty

The Audi S4 is priced at R809 000 and is sold with a 1-year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan.

Verdict

The S4 remains the sleeping giant in the A4 range. Its understated looks hide its penchant for performance well (if you're a sports sedan aficionado who doesn't want to attract too much attention to yourself). The V6 turbopetrol loves a long stretch on the freeway and there’s no unrefined cacophony from the exhaust pipes that will leave you embarrassed as you leave a crowd behind. It is, in a word, a class act.

The chassis and road holding capabilities are some of the best we’ve experienced from a quattro car and it’s comfortable to boot when you aren’t in a hurry.

There isn’t much to complain about in this S4 and it's a solid package for someone who wants power and sophistication without having to shout about it.

More so, its pricing is quite good in comparison to its direct rivals. At a base price of R809 000 (February 2018), it's nearly R30k cheaper than the BMW 340i M-Sport and R100k less than the Mercedes-AMG C43. It's well worth a look, then...

Audi S4 and S4 Avant gain new 342bhp (255kw) mild-hybrid diesel

New diesel powertrain gives BMW M340i rival 516lb ft of torque, reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

The range-topping Audi S4 saloon and Avant estate models will be offered with a 342bhp mild-hybrid turbocharged diesel V6 engine.

The new powertrain will match a 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel with a 48V belt-driven starter motor end electrically powered compressor. As well as producing 342bhp, the system produces 516lb ft of torque, allowing the S4 saloon to achieve 0-62mph in 4.8 secs, with a limited top speed of 155mph. The Avant is 0.1sec slower to reach 62mph.

Both versions of the Mercedes-AMG C43 rival will retain Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive system and use an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Audi lists a fuel consumption of 45.5mpg for the S4 saloon and 44.8mpg for the estate. CO2 emissions range from 161-163g/km and 164-164g/km CO2 respectively.

The mild hybrid diesel engine is the same as that recently introduced on the S5, S6 and S7 Sportback models, albeit in a moderately different state of tune, with 342bhp. It's the only engine that will be offered in the European market for those models, and it's likely that Audi will continue that trend with the S4, given the need to meet new WLTP tests and fleet emission targets.

Audi S4 gets the TDI treatment (but it's not coming to SA)

Audi has quietly revealed a new TDI version of its S4 Sedan, although the diesel-powered performance saloon is not coming to South Africa.

In the S4, this oil-burning six-cylinder offers 255 kW and 700 N.m, with an electric-powered compressor providing “strong off-the-line performance” and a mild-hybrid system enhancing efficiency. Top speed comes in at 250 km/h, while the obligatory dash to three figures takes a claimed 4,8 seconds.

Audi South Africa, meanwhile, tells CARmag.co.za it will “continue with the TFSI version of the Audi S4 going forward”. As a reminder, this petrol-powered model employs a single-turbo V6 sending 260 kW and 500 N.m to all four corners, facilitating a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4,7 seconds.
