Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine by Mulliner

"Bentley unveiled the Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine by Mulliner at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, showcasing the ultimate expression of bespoke automotive luxury, craftsmanship, individualisation and refinement.

The Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine is one metre longer and 79 mm taller than Bentley's new Mulsanne and features a unique interior with private-aviation-style seating configuration in the rear cabin.

Bentley's first application of electrochromic or 'smart glass' - which allows passengers to switch the interior division and rear-cabin window glass between clear and opaque at the touch of a button - and a suite of onboard technology ensures the Mulsanne Grand Limousine by Mulliner experience is both exclusive and luxurious.

This private commission has been designed, engineered and handcrafted by Bentley's coachbuilding division, Mulliner, which has more than 100 years' heritage in peerless bespoke automotive coachbuilding and fabrication."

I prefer the older Bentley design... it looks more classic and sophisticated than the new retro/classic mix.

Those headlights need to go though ugh.
 
BENTLEY EXPANDS SA RANGE: NEW MODEL PRICING HERE

Bentley Motors South Africa has added two new derivatives to its ever-expanding local range.

The Flying Spur V8 S is the first of the two local newcomers from the Crewe-based company, and is positioned between the standard V8 and the range-topping W12.

The S-badged variant conjures up 388 kW and 680 N.m from its 4,0-litre turbocharged, eight-cylinder heart (some 15 kW and 20 N.m more than the base model), galloping from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,9 seconds.

The Bentley Flying Spur V8 S is priced at R3 861 000, which works out to R239 000 more than the standard V8. It benefits from a revised suspension set-up, as well as a smattering of subtle styling upgrades.

Meanwhile, the local Mulsanne range has also been broadened with the addition of an EWB (elongated wheelbase) variant, predictably dubbed the Mulsanne EWB.

This serves as the new flagship in the Mulsanne range, and is thus positioned above the standard Mulsanne and the Mulsanne Speed. It boasts some 250 mm of extra legroom in the rear as well as extended rear doors.

A 6,8-litre turbocharged V8 provides the rear wheels with 377 kW and 1 020 N.m, which translates to a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 5,5 seconds, two-tenths slower than the lighter base model (the Mulsanne Speed, of course, makes a little more power and is thus quicker to three figures).

The Bentley Mulsanne EWB is priced at R7 384 000, commanding a hefty R1 232 000 premium over the base model.

In addition, we can expect the Bentley Bentayga Diesel to join the W12-powered model in SA around the middle of 2017.

5 biggest engines on South Africa’s new car market

Remember the old saying “there’s no replacement for displacement”? Well, it seems a few automakers still subscribe to this notion, despite the spread of engine downsizing into the vast majority of segments.

So, we decided to have a sniff around South Africa’s new vehicle market to identify the five biggest engines (in terms of cubic capacity) currently available, and take a quick look at the vehicles they power.

Needless to say, they’re not cheap…

1. Bentley’s 6 752 cm3 V8

The biggest engine currently on offer in SA is this 6,8-litre V8, which has been turbocharged to produce 395 kW and a whopping 1 100 N.m in the Bentley Mulsanne Speed (and a smidgen less in the standard Mulsanne). Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, it gulps at a claimed 15,0 L/100 km and propels the hefty sedan from standstill to 100 km/h in 4,9 seconds.

2. BMW Group’s 6 592 cm3 V12

This hefty turbocharged V12 displaces 6,6 litres, and is fitted to the Rolls-Royce Dawn (420 kW/820 N.m), Ghost (420 kW/780 N.m) and Wraith (465 kW/800 N.m) as well as the new BMW M760Li xDrive (448 kW/800 N.m). The fastest accelerating of the lot is the 7 Series, which hits three figures in just 3,7 seconds.

3. Lamborghini’s 6 498 cm3 V12

The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is powered by this naturally aspirated 6,5-litre V12, which sends some 515 kW and 690 N.m to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. It’s easily the fastest vehicle on this list, rocketing from 0-100 km/h in just 2,9 seconds (the roadster is one-tenth tardier) and topping out at 350 km/h.

4. Jeep’s 6 417 cm3 V8

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT The cheapest vehicle here is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT, which boasts a naturally aspirated 6,4-litre V8. Maximum power is a quoted 344 kW, while peak torque comes in at 624 N.m, which Jeep says is enough for a 5,0-second blast to 100 km/h.

5. Audi’s 6 299 cm3 W12

Audi A8 L W12 The only W12 one this list comes in the form of the free-breathing 6,3-litre that provides significant shove to the Audi A8 L 6,3 W12 quattro. Worth 368 kW and 625 N.m, the big 12-cylinder mill is linked to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, facilitating a claimed 4,6-second dash to three figures.

Bentley to experiment with animal-friendly materials

Leather is one of the key materials used in high-end luxury automotive interiors thanks to its sumptuous appearance and feel. The issue, however, is that several animals are forced to lay down their lives.

As a result of this, Bentley has expressed an interest in making use of animal-friendly materials in future cabins.

Stefan Sielaff, Bentley’s director of design, said at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit that the brand’s growing vegan customer-base inspired this possibility, Auto Express reports.

“You can’t sell an animal-containing product like a Bentley, with 20 leather hides, to someone with a vegan lifestyle,” Sielaff said, suggesting that this new avenue would not do away with animal hides altogether.

Sielaff added that, together with Mulliner, Bentley would present a vegan interior comprising of protein leather, mushroom leather and jellyfish material (although the latter is, well, an animal).

There’s no estimated date of arrival for these new materials, but a Bentley spokesperson says that “this is something the design and colour and trim guys are interrogating”.
