NO SUPER-FRUGAL BMW 520D EFFICIENTDYNAMICS FOR SA

BMW has released a few details about its new, ultra-frugal 520d EfficientDynamics Edition model, but unfortunately the fuel-sipper is not destined for South African roads.

The EfficientDynamics Edition derivative is part of the new 5 Series range and is powered by a 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine delivering 140 kW and 400 N.m, with the latter on tap between 1 750 and 2 500 r/min. The sedan accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 7,5 seconds.

But just how efficient is this new model? Well, the Munich-based brand claims a combined fuel consumption as low as 3,9 L/100 km, with corresponding CO2 emissions of just 102 g/kg. Optimistic, sure, but still impressive for a luxury sedan of this size.

In addition to what BMW calls “the optimised efficiency” of both the engine and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, “enhanced aerodynamic characteristics” and reduced weight allow this version of the 520d to claim rock-bottom economy figures.

In addition, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is equipped with the brand’s BluePerformance technology, which adds an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection technology to the standard particulate filter, oxidation catalyst and NOX storage catalyst.

While this particular derivative won’t make it to SA (but the standard 520d will), we can expect a plug-in hybrid in the form of the BMW 530e iPerformance (with a system output of 185 kW) at some stage later this year.

Meet the new BMW 5 Series Touring SA won't get...

By now, you may have realised that we enjoy a good wagon here at CARmag.co.za. But, over the past few years, local buying trends have sadly prompted most brands to kill off their estate cars in South Africa.

And that makes the international reveal of the new BMW 5 Series Touring – which shares much with the new 5 Series sedan, due to arrive in local dealerships rather soon – sting.

Yes, this is yet another wagon that South Africans won’t be able to buy. Indeed, the Munich-based says the new model was developed “specifically for the European market”.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring will make its official debut in March 2017 at the Geneva International Motor Show, with four engines on offer, along with the option of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

Standard features will include rear air suspension with an automatic self-levelling function, while the options list will be crammed with items such as dynamic dampers, integral active steering and M Sport suspension (with a 10 mm drop in ride height).

BMW 5 Series Touring BMW says space inside has increased substantially, now allowing up to three child seats to be fixed securely across the rear. The boot capacity, too, has grown.

The BMW 530i Touring employs a 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine worth 185 kW and 350 N.m (and mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission), facilitating a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 6,5 seconds. A 3,0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine (250 kW/450 N.m), meanwhile, combines with all-wheel drive to send the BMW 540i xDrive Touring to three figures in 5,1 seconds.

The four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 520d Touring extracts 140 kW and 400 N.m from its 2,0-litre displacement. As standard, this oil-burner is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, but can also be specified with an eight-speed automatic. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 8,0 seconds (or two-tenths quicker in auto guise).

Rounding off the line-up of engines available from launch is a 3,0-litre straight-six diesel worth 195 kW and 620 N.m. This mill can send its power through either the rear wheels or to all four corners. The all-wheel drive variant sees off the obligatory sprint in 5,6 seconds.

So, there you have it. Yet another tasty wagon you can’t buy…

That is one sexy piece of machinery... Hopefully they depreciate worse than the outgoing model so I can have one in 5 years :D :D
 
The new seventh-generation BMW 5 Series has been revealed and it will be available in South Africa from the end of February 2017.

Engine line-up

Four engines including two turbopetrol and two turbodiesel engines will be available from launch. All engines offered in the new 5 Series belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics engine family. The new 5 Series will be available in rear-wheel drive guise only and xDrive all-wheel drive will not be offered in South Africa.

Starting with the petrol engines, the new 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine in the 530i will offer 185 kW and 350 Nm of torque with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.4 L/100 km, which is an improvement of 11% over its predecessor. The range-topping engine is a 6 cylinder, 3.0-litre engine offering 250 kW and 450 Nm of torque in the 540i. Claimed fuel consumption is pegged at 6.5 L/100km.

On the diesel front, the 520d will be powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine offering 140 kW and 400 Nm of torque with fuel consumption figures of 4.1 L/100 km (manual) and 4.0 L/100 km (8-speed automatic).

The 530d with its six-cylinder, 3.0-litre diesel engine will offer 195 kW and 620 Nm of torque. Claimed fuel consumption for this derivative is 4.5 L/100 km. A plug-in hybrid model will be launched at a later stage in the form of the 185 kW 530e iPerformance.

The launch is taking place at the end of February 2017 and we have pricing for this new model.
