2017 Citroen C4 Cactus Rip Curl

Yip don't want to damage other cars doors.
I saw one on the Citroën lot the other day and that mess on the doors is actually rubber and it's spongy, it's going to look like such schit when the cars 10yrs+ old and all the new car freshness has permanently evaporated.

French emissions investigations could spread to PSA Group

French environment minister Ségolène Royal has hinted that emissions investigations could spread further than Renault, putting Citroën, DS and Peugeot under the spotlight

The Citroën C4 Cactus is the latest car under scrutiny regarding emissions, after the model in Blue HDI 100 guise was found to display 'anomalies' in emissions tests, according to Le Parisien.

It is alleged that the car produced NOx emissions of 585mg/km, rather than the 80mg/km it was understood to produce, when tested on the roads in December by a research centre commissioned by the European Commission.

In addition, under laboratory conditions, outside of the normal test temperatures of 17-23deg celcius, three times the permitted NOx emissions were produced, claims the French newspaper.

It is reported that the PSA Group, parent company of Citroën, DS and Peugeot, has sent its vice-president, Christian Chapelle, to explain the results to the European Commission.

Lucia Caudet, Commission spokesperson for internal market, industry, entrepreneurship and SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), said: "In the third quarter of 2016, the Commission's in-house Joint Research Centre (JRC) took a number of emissions measurements on four cars in the laboratory and on the road. The JRC took measurements on three diesel cars and one petrol car. These cars were selected randomly and they were of different models, years, mileage and mostly rented, hence the measurements are not indicative of particular concerns nor representative of entire fleets.

"A discrepancy between NOx emissions measured in the laboratory and in real driving conditions is not necessarily indication of illegal behaviour. Under the current legal framework, it is for the national authority that type-approved or certified the car to determine whether illegal defeat devices were used.

"On 22 December, the Commission transmitted the information on these measurements to the relevant national authorities and to the EP Inquiry Committee on car emissions. It will be up to the national authorities to publish the results of their national investigations including fully representative and analysed information on entire car fleets."

So far, French environment minister Ségolène Royal has not commented on the alleged findings. However, earlier this week, following reports that Renault is under investigation for emissions discrepancies, she suggested that Citroën, DS and Peugeot could all face scrutiny regarding their cars' emissions from the French government.

Royal commened that "there could be other investigations," and that "[Renault] far exceeded the permissible standards. This is also the case of other manufacturers, to a different extent."

Reuters reported at the time that Royal did not build upon the comments, but did clarify: "I have no reason to think that Renault cheated like Volkswagen."

A PSA spokesman couldn't add any response to the possibility of investigation, but did clarify that "PSA will continue to cooperate fully with the commission regarding all the results".

Regarding the C4 Cactus's emissions, PSA later said: "We are surprised by these results, which were not communicated to PSA and which protocol is unknown to us. Especially since similar vehicles with the same engine have been tested by the French authorities and highlighted consistent results, in particular regarding the real-world D3 test."

Meanwhile, six Volkswagen executives face fraud charges in the US following the Volkswagen emissions scandal. Five are believed to be in Germany, and one was arrested while on holiday in Florida.

Even though the C4 Cactus no longer features on new vehicle price lists, it was undoubtedly one of the most endearing/easily likeable products that Citroen offered in South Africa. It was clearly not designed to please fuddy-duddies: the Citroen celebrates individualism and creative expression in an almost innocent, playful way and is the antithesis to boxy, po-faced crossovers (probably better than many of them too, if not at least more intriguing).

Having said that, although there is no doubt about the validity of the car's warranty/service back-up (courtesy of the existing Peugeot franchise network) or justifiable fears that spare parts will become unavailable in the near future, common sense suggests that, like Volkswagen's offshoot SEAT, which left the local market following a brief foray a decade ago, trade-in values of new or recently bought Citroens will suffer badly as a result of the brand's local distribution coming to the end of last year.

However, that certainly does not disqualify the C4 Cactus as a value proposition, especially as a used buy. Some buyers want something unconventional and, for the lack of a better word, spunky. Citroens are not for everyone, certainly, but of those models that didn't receive the uptake they truly deserved when they graced new-car showrooms, the C4 Cactus is up there.

Likable? It looks like one of those teenagers with bad skin. Fugly AF! And you must be insane to still consider a Citroen in RSA.

You think that is a pretty car?!

Only reason to consider Citroen in RSA is if you can get one dirt cheap 'cos you are in for a surprise if you want to try and sell it 5 years from now.

Last I checked looks were subjective?

Anyhow you buy the car as it's actually a very competent; lots of kit; very good turbo petrol motor & 100x more distinctive & unique than other econoboxes on the road.

I would not worry about parts as PSA group has no intention of "pulling out" of SA.

Only issue would be resale yes but if you keep the car for 5+yrs I don't think the potential poor resale is the end of the world.

Nearly new buying guide: Citroen C4 Cactus

This eye-catching SUV-cum-hatch is worth a look

A bit confusing, the history of the C4 Cactus. The first cuddly incarnation arrived in 2014 as a quirky, Airbump-laden small SUV. It was designed in the Citroën idiom of old to stand out from the crowd, but it also offered practical, comfortable and fuel-efficient motoring. It sold on looks alone, though, because it looked like nothing else and came in a range of bright colours that contrasted neatly with those protruding bumps along its flanks.

A facelift in 2018 ushered in a much sharper but less cute-looking Cactus, with Airbumps minimised and a much more mainstream approach, and in the process, it became marketed as a regular family hatch rather than an SUV. It was retired this year and its place was taken in the order books by the new C4, a car that, up until that point, had been a family hatch but was now marketed as an SUV. Clear? Good. Then let’s continue.

Well, first there was a range of frugal petrol and diesel engines on offer. Petrol-wise, there’s an 81bhp three-cylinder 1.2-litre and two turbocharged versions of the same unit making 109bhp or 128bhp. The only diesel initially was a 99bhp 1.6-litre, and it was replaced by a 1.5-litre (also with 99bhp) as part of the car’s facelift. Pre-facelift examples come in four different trim levels: Touch, Feel, Flair and Flair Edition. Touch gets a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system, a DAB radio, a USB port and cruise control. Feel adds air conditioning, Bluetooth and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, plus gloss black exterior trim and body-coloured door handles. Flair adds plenty more kit, including sat-nav and a rear-view camera. Flair Edition gives you fancy seats and a panoramic roof.
