Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R to be brand’s last V8-engined car

Fifteen VXR8 GTS-R will be sold to the UK, and are likely to be the last V8-engined Vauxhalls ever, as Holden’s Australian production comes to an end

The Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R will be the last V8-engined Vauxhall as the swansong to the Holden Commodore-based VXR8, production of which comes to an end later this year.

The hardcore GTS-R will be launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Production of the Commodore comes to an end in October, but not before 15 are transformed into VXR8 GTS-Rs, with 587bhp and 546lb ft of torque. These figures make it the most powerful Vauxhall-badged car yet, thanks to engine remapping and an improved air filter. There are also upgraded brakes and model-exclusive 20in alloys.

The GTS-R is marked by revised front-end styling, a splitter, carbonfibre vents and a new diffuser and spoiler, while Alcantara trim has been added to the interior.

The final of the 15 GTS-Rs will be the last in the VXR8’s ten-year history, after the model replaced the two-door Vauxhall Monaro in 2007. It’s likely to be the brand’s last V8 model, as the small-car-friendly PSA Group takes over the Vauxhall and Opel brands at the end of this year.

A VXR8 successor under PSA would be more likely to use a highly-tuned four-cylinder engine like that of the Peugeot RCZ R, although a high-performance V6 can’t be ruled out.

The limited-run GTS-R will cost £74,500, and delivery takes several months; an order placed now will arrive in the UK during the first quarter of 2018.

Some GTS-Rs will arrive before the end of this year, however; Vauxhall has sold 11 of the 15, and two of its five Maloo LSAs - the GTS-R's closely-related ute variant.

587bhp Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R - full specs of brand's most powerful car

Fifteen VXR8 GTS-Rs will be sold in the UK, and are likely to be the last V8-engined Vauxhalls ever as Holden’s Australian production comes to an end

The Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R can lay claim to being its maker's most powerful road model as well as its last to use a V8 engine.

The UK-version of Holden's swansong Commodore, which goes out of production this October, has been launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It's powered by a supercharged 6.2-litre LSA V8 that's received hardware and software upgrades to produce 587bhp and 546lb ft of torque.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential with torque vectoring and enables a 0-60mph time of 4.2sec. Top speed is electronically limited at 155mph. Braking is handled by 410mm (front) and 372mm (rear) discs that work with six and four-piston callipers respectively. Vauxhall's right-hand-drive super saloon also gets new 20in alloy wheels.

The GTS-R is marked by revised front-end styling, a splitter, carbonfibre vents and a new diffuser and spoiler, while Alcantara trim has been added to the interior.

The model is on sale now, with just 15 to be built, priced from £74,500. Eleven have already been sold. First UK deliveries are due before the end of 2017, with the rest expected in the first quarter of 2018.

This will mark the close of a 10-year story for the VXR8, which began when it replaced the two-door Vauxhall Monaro in 2007. The GTS-R is predicted to remain the last V8-engined Vauxhall model, because the brand's new owner, the PSA Group, will likely focus on smaller-capacity and larger-volume vehicles.

As such, a VXR8 successor under PSA would be more likely to use a highly-tuned four-cylinder engine like that of the Peugeot RCZ R, although a high-performance V6 can’t be ruled out.

Vauxhall is also still selling the Maloo LSA, the GTS-R's closely-related ute variant, with three of the five allocations of that car still available.

We give Vauxhall’s most powerful VXR8 a smoky send-off at Goodwood

The VXR8 GTS-R will be the last V8-engined Vauxhall, so we felt it was necessarily to give it a fitting goodbye

Pat Doran, Chris Forsberg and Ed Berrier. Three exceptionally talented drivers who have all fallen foul of Lord March’s tight and technical drive this Goodwood weekend. It’s a thought I try to suppress as I edge my way towards the hill’s famous startline.

The Range Rover Velar up ahead launches with the little drama, rocketing up to turn one. And now it’s my turn.

Under the marshal’s instructions, I coast up to the line, select first gear and wait for the signal. The tension in the air is palpable, with spectators on both sides of the avenue expecting plenty of smoke. After all, this has been the hooligan’s car of choice since 2007, and I’m keen to send the VXR8 out in a blaze of tyre-smoking fury.

With the TV camera crane moved into position, the marshal’s hand rises, giving me the universal signal to side step the clutch. Unsurprisingly, the rear tyres are instantly overcome with 546lb ft of torque, spinning themselves into a smoky oblivion.

Selecting second gear does little to quell the loss of traction, and the process starts anew. In fact, it’s only when the VXR8 GTS-R is north of 70mph that the rear tyres begin to find some purchase on hill’s dirty asphalt.

The first two low-speed corners tell me that despite this being the most powerful Vauxhall ever produced, the VXR8 remains beautifully balanced, and dare I say it, approachable. It’s a welcome characteristic as I accelerate towards Molecomb, a high-speed left-hander that has caught out two of the three aforementioned racers this weekend.

I brake early, but still enter with enough speed to feel the car moving around beneath me. With its relatively long wheelbase, it’s tempting to provoke the GTS-R into oversteer, but I quickly remember that only 15 of these beasts will be making their way to the UK, and opt for some restraint.

With tree cover rendering the next sweeping right unsighted, the flint wall is tackled with the same level of respect. However, after clearing the track’s most daunting piece of furniture, I’m determined to make full use of the GTS-R's 6.2-litre V8’s 587bhp, and carry as much speed as I dare onto the final straight. As I blast through the finishing line, I have a quick glance at the speedo and see the needle sweep past 120mph. And then it’s all over, as I’m given the signal to slow down for world’s most glamorous car park.

Burbling back down the hill, following a McLaren P1 GTR of all things, brings home just how much we will miss Vauxhall’s V8-engined brute. Even when surrounded by the world’s rarest supercars, the marshals along with 150,000 strong crowds can’t help but target the GTS-R, shouting for burnouts every time I come to a stop. I duly oblige; after all, this will be the last time this particular car will be driven in anger.

So, while my run in the GTS-R was a rather nerve-wracking one, that stint behind the wheel will forever be one of my fondest memories of the Festival of Speed. Bring on 2018.

Vaux off...

Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R

The new Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R is powered by an evolution of the current GTS's supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine, producing 595PS (up from 576PS) and 740Nm of torque, making it Vauxhall's most powerful car in the company's 114-year history.

Production of the Holden Commodore model, on which the GTS-R is based, comes to an end in Australia in October 2017, when Holden's manufacturing plant finally closes. Vauxhall - a sister brand to Holden in the GM family - has been importing the VXR8 to the UK in various forms since 2007, and sells the car through selected dealerships in its network with full service back up and a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty.

As befits its last-of-line status, the GTS-R-R is no ordinary VXR8 - and in this form it's exclusive to the UK, too. Sending drive via a limited slip differential to the rear wheels, the GTS-R retains the previous GTS's clever torque vectoring system, but adds an upgraded braking system with six-piston, monoblock calipers and 410mm discs up front. In addition, the GTS-R wears all-new 20-inch forged alloy rims (ten-inch width at the rear, 9-inch at the front).

Visually, the GTS-R has a fresh face, with a new front fascia, splitter, wings and carbon fibre vents, while at the rear there's a new-look diffuser, spoiler (with carbon fibre upper), lower panel and quad exhaust outlets with diamond-shaped exhaust tips. Inside, the diamond theme continues in the Alcantara and leather seat trim.

The current supercharged LSA engine has been re-mapped and is fitted with a high-flow air filter to achieve its hike in power.

Just 15 Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R's will come to the UK, at an on-the-road price of £74,500.

ENGINE

At the heart of the VXR8 GTS-R is a supercharged LSA V8 (identical to that used in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1), delivering 595PS. Performance figures back this up, with 60mph arriving in just 4.2 seconds from standstill and a limited top speed of 155mph.

The new GTS-R's Eaton supercharger has 4-lobe rotors, 9psi boost and 1.9 litres of air per revolution. Unlike a turbocharged car, the Eaton supercharger provides the GTS-R with stronger and more linear performance across its entire rev-range. Other LSA features include:

Stand-alone water to air charge cooling system
Separate transmission and differential cooling system
Water to oil engine cooling system
Bi-modal air-intake system
High-flow exhaust manifolds and exhaust system with Bi-modal silencers
Delivering drive to the rear axle is a heavy-duty GM/2F 6-speed automatic transmission with Active Select Function and paddle shift. To optimise its performance at higher operating temperatures, the transmission has its own oil cooler.

A 6-speed manual transmission is also available.

Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R 2017 review

Should I buy one?

What the VXR8 GTS-R has on its side is character. The new BMW M5 will undoubtedly walk away from it across a moorland road, but it wouldn’t necessarily be more entertaining. There can’t be many people who are willing to drop £74,500 on something that looks quite so brash, but Vauxhall only needs to find 15 buyers. If you’re after a quirky and charismatic alternative to the super-saloon establishment, you should try very hard to be one of them.

Vauxhall VXR8 GTS-R

Final HSV GTSR W1 Marks The End Of The RWD Commodore And Zeta Platform

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/...e-rwd-commodore-and-zeta-platform-122612.html

Introduced in 2006 by the Holden VE Commodore, the General Motors Zeta platform or Global RWD Architecture is now consigned to the history books. January 3, 2018, marks the end of production as the 298th and final example of the HSV GTSR W1 left the assembly line. Also, the last Commodore-based HSV draws to a close three decades of modifying locally built Commodores.

Equipped with the LS9 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that’s good for a neck-snapping 636 horsepower, the W1 is a fitting closure to the Commodore VF II. And with it, Holden enters 2018 as a General Motors-dependant automaker, whose every product is imported to the Land Down Under. Sad, isn't it?

Finished in Light My Fire, the 275th W1 allocated to the Australian market will be retained by HSV for the company's heritage collection. “Any success we’ve enjoyed has been directly attributable to our passionate staff, our dedicated dealer-body and of course our loyal fans who have helped build this brand through its 30-year journey,” declared managing director Tim Jackson.

Citing official records, Holden Special Vehicles highlights that it had built 90,114 vehicles to the end of 2017, with the vast majority coming in the form of Commodore-based brawlers. The numbers will keep going up as Clayton South prepares to welcome the Colorado SportsCat mid-size pickup, Chevrolet Silverado HD full-size pickup, and right-hand drive Chevrolet Camaro.

What about the Elizabeth manufacturing plant? According to Holden, real estate developer Pelligra Group bought the site, which will be renamed Lionsgate Business Park. Staying true to the past of General Motors’ Australian division, Holden and Pelligra plan to establish the Redline Museum and Redline Café within the business park. Oh well, it could've been worse.

On that bittersweet note, what to you think about the Commodore going front- and all-wheel-drive thanks to Opel know-how? As a competitor for the Mondeo, the Insignia-based Commodore ticks all the right boxes. But as a follow-up to the rear-wheel-drive VF II, the ZB is a letdown, to say the least.
