Kia adds top spec Picanto auto model in SA

• Kia Picanto 1.2 smart now available with automatic transmission
• Feature-packed smart derivative gains even more convenience

Kia is expanding the Kia Picanto range with the introduction of the 1.2 Smart Auto. The range-topping Picanto model has thus far only been available with a five-speed manual transmission.

Much loved car

With more than 700 units sold every month since its launch a mere six months ago, the Kia Picanto is without a doubt one of the most-loved city cars currently available in South Africa.

Now in its third generation, the latest Picanto’s comes with a range of 11 exterior colours – from classic white to vibrant lime green metallic.

The range-topping Picanto smart range’s notably high specification level has also seen many new customers join the Kia family as the trend of buying down continues. A combination of compact dimensions, smart styling and smart features have convinced these customers that the Picanto is the perfect companion for every day urban driving.

With everything from two-tone leather upholstery to Apple CarPlay included as standard, comfort and convenience is covered.

And while the compact dimensions go far to ease driving in congested traffic situations, it also makes parking a breeze – especially because of the rear park assist system that incorporates a reverse camera with dynamic guidelines, displayed on a large, 7-inch colour touchscreen, all included as standard on the Picanto smart.

The Picanto 1.2 smart Automatic is powered by a four-cylinder 1.25-litre MPI engine that produces peak power of 61kW, and 122Nm of torque. Mated to KIA’s well-known four-speed automatic transmission, the combination ensures high levels of fuel efficiency to keep running costs low.

For its application in the new Picanto, KIA engineers have optimised the valve timing of the engine’s dual CVVT (continuously-variable valve timing) system, and a new cooling system with shut-off valve that reduces the time it takes the engine to warm-up from a cold start.

Low-friction coated piston rings also help to reduce cylinder friction for greater efficiency.

The KIA Picanto 1.2 smart Automatic retails for R212 495, inclusive of KIA’s class-leading Unlimited kilometer, 5-year warranty, inclusive of 3-years / Unlimited Kilometres Roadside Assistance, as standard. A service plan is available as an option through KIA Financial Services. Pricing for the Picanto range is as follows:

Kia adds new range-topping auto to Picanto line-up

Kia Motors South Africa has expanded its popular Picanto line-up to 12 derivatives with the addition of a new range-topping 1,2 Smart Auto variant.

When the third-generation Picanto was launched locally in July 2017, the flagship Smart derivative was available only with a five-speed manual. But now, based on “market feedback”, the local arm of the Korean brand has decided to bring back the automatic option (still no further word on the possibility of the 1,0-litre turbo-triple engine being offered here).

Priced at R212 495, the new derivative features the automaker’s familiar 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, worth 61 kW and 122 N.m, mated to a four-speed automatic ‘box.

The Smart trim level includes items such as two-tone leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay functionality, rear parking sensors (with a reversing camera) and a seven-inch colour touchscreen.

As with the other derivatives in the Picanto range, a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty is standard (a service plan is an optional extra).

A price increase has been applied across the rest of the range, with the majority of derivatives now costing R3 000 more than at launch, and a handful now some R4 000 more expensive.

That auto is rubbish so would touch it anyway.

But the service plans are pretty cheap and therefore not a massive addition to the price.

There is literally no options list other than the sunroof.

Should I buy one?

The X-Line is probably the best-driving Picanto, its slightly more cushioned ride better compensating for the bigger 16in alloys that unsettle the GT-Line. And this trim level also provides the more convincing 1.25 engine, if at a price. The X-Line is also slightly better equipped than the GT-Line (but not the GT-Line S), as it should be given its marginally higher price.

Expect to see this version emerging on the road soon, then, and given the popularity of crossovers and city cars, it should attract plenty of buyers.

912 miles (1459 km's) to go on less than a full tank. Not bad. If that is the range left and not distance travelled.

I have never liked this idea on cars. I feel it may just be one more thing that can possibly go wrong a few years down the line. I suppose at least with a thermostat it has a bleed hole and most (all?) thermostats are designed to fail in the open position, so that if it does fail for whatever reason you won't cook your engine. But at least the Kia has a proper heat gauge, not a silly little overheat light like other city cars I have seen.
