Kia Motors South Africa has announced an updated for its 2020 Picanto line-up, handing the small hatchback more tech and safety equipment.
Beginning with the entry-level Start derivative, various safety features including a front passegner airbag (complementing the existing driver's side item) and ABS braking complete the upgrade. Isofix child anchorage points have been added, too. Already included in the Start package is power-steering, manual air-con and a radio with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. The 13-inch steel wheels remain.
Start models employ the Korean automaker’s 1,0-litre three-pot (good for 49 kW and 96 N.m), coupled with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Priced from R167 995 for the manual, the base Picanto now demands a R5 000 premium over the pre-updated version.
Street models gain an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality, electric windows all-round and heated door mirrors. A multifunction steering wheel and height-adjustable driver’s seat remain part of the package, while this model's 14-inch steel wheels benefit from a redesigned plastic cover design. Two engine options are on offer, a 1,0- and 1,2-litre, specified with either manual or automatic transmission, priced from R179 995 for the 1,0 manual to R202 995 for the 1,2 auto.
All Picanto veriants ship standard with a two-year/30 000 km service plan, plus five-year warranty, including roadside assistance.

The third-generation Kia Picanto came to market in 2017 and with it came higher levels of driving and cabin refinement and it remains popular for buyers looking for a reliable and affordable city car.

An important change has taken place on the Picanto’s entry-level Start trim, which now features a front passenger airbag bringing the airbag count to 2 and Kia has also fitted ABS and EBD which will please safety-conscious buyers.
The Picanto Start derivatives include standard features such as 13-inch steel wheel with wheel covers, power steering with steering adjustment, manual air conditioning, radio with Bluetooth and a USB/Aux input.
The Picanto Start is powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre petrol engine that offers 49 kW and 96 Nm of torque and comes mated with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
The mid-spec Picanto Street build on the specification offered in the Start derivatives by adding features such as electric windows, mounted steering controls and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Notably though, the Street specification has now been bolstered with the addition of an 8-inch colour touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Kia Picanto gains essential safety kit in 2020 spec upgrade
The Kia Picanto has always been a solid offering at the budget end of the market, but the base model has drawn criticism for lacking some basic safety features.
That changes with the 2020 specification upgrade for the Korean hatchback, with the entry-level Start models now receiving a passenger airbag and ABS brakes as standard. Previously only a driver’s side airbag was fitted. As before, other standard features on the start include air conditioning and an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.
However, the 1.2-litre engine option falls away for the Start base model, although the 61kW unit is still available on other spec grades. That means Kia’s 1-litre unit, with 49kW and 96Nm, is your only option if you’re buying the Start, although you can choose between a five-speed manual and four-speed automatic gearbox.
The second cheapest model in the Picanto range, the Street spec grade, has also been given a spec upgrade, with Kia’s 20cm touchscreen infotainment system now fitted as standard. The unit is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other spec gains come in the form of electric windows front and rear, and electric (plus heated) side mirrors. These features come in addition to the amenities that were already fitted as standard, such as remote central locking, height-adjustable driver’s seat and audio controls on the steering wheel.
Also getting a spec boost are the Style and Smart range-toppers. The former gains a leather-covered steering wheel and mirror-mounted indicators. As before, the Style is fitted with 14-inch alloy wheels.

Thanks to Korean carblog Bobaedream, we can see the new car which is believed to be revealed quite soon.
The facelifted Kia Picanto gets more modern styling cues lifted straight from other Kia products. There are new-look headlamps, a new grille, sportier front bumper and fog lamps. The rear has been given a subtle change too. Interestingly, the leaked front image shows the flat radar panel indicating that the compact A-segment car has gained a modern driving assistance kit, which is likely to be active cruise control or some form of autonomous emergency braking.

The refreshed version of the firm’s third-generation Picanto – or “Morning” as it’s known in its domestic market – gains a new interpretation of Kia's signature tiger-nose grille, along with redesigned headlamps (complete with a fresh lighting signature) and an updated front bumper housing revised foglamps.
Round back, you’ll notice a more intricately designed bumper, along with new taillamps and what appears to be a pair of faux-tailpipes. As is the norm, the mid-cycle update also includes new wheel designs.
Inside, the Korean-spec hatchback gains both a new 4,2-inch colour multi-information display as well as a larger, eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Kia Motors South Africa says the GT-Line and X-Line variants of the facelifted Picanto are “under consideration” for a local introduction.
The Korean firm’s local arm says the refreshed Picanto range is expected to touch down in South Africa in the final quarter of 2020. Of course, we’ve already seen the updated third-generation Picanto, after the little city car broke cover in South Korea in the second week of May 2020 (wearing the “Morning” badge).
Now, the company’s division in Europe has released fresh information, including the fact the upgraded Picanto will be offered with “re-engineered powertrains” and a new, optional automated manual transmission. We should point out, however, it remains to be seen whether the local range will gain the same upgrades.
The sportily styled GT-Line and rugged-looking X-Line variants gain the latest interpretation of the brand’s “tiger nose” grille, which features red highlights on GT-Line model and black trim on X-Line model. Both models feature redesigned headlamps and LED daytime running lights, along with redesigned LED taillamps. The front and rear bumper designs, too, have been tweaked.

Like Hyundai’s Grand i10 Cargo, the Picanto Runner ditches the standard city hatch’s rear bench to create a flat loading area. The Korean firm says it has added “sturdy” metal cargo dividers, while the rear glass has been tinted.

The Picanto Style offers a few more nice-to-haves such as a 3-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel and leather-clad gear lever. This derivative is now distinguished by integrated turn signals in the side mirror housings, which are also now electrically foldable. Fourteen-inch alloys are standard.
The range-topping Picanto Smart, which is offered exclusively with the 1.25-litre engine and a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, features LED daytime running lights, sporty-looking alloy wheels, a full leather interior, as well as a sunroof, which is certainly a rarity in the budget car segment. With a facelifted Picanto waiting in the wings, Kia has sweetened the deal on its budget-car range by offering buyers 2 free tanks of fuel every month for the first 6 months of ownership (if they buy one before 31 December 2020)*.
The Picanto Style offers a few more nice-to-haves such as a 3-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel and leather-clad gear lever. This derivative is now distinguished by integrated turn signals in the side mirror housings, which are also now electrically foldable. Fourteen-inch alloys are standard.
The range-topping Picanto Smart, which is offered exclusively with the 1.25-litre engine and a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, features LED daytime running lights, sporty-looking alloy wheels, a full leather interior, as well as a sunroof, which is certainly a rarity in the budget car segment. Meanwhile, park-distance control and a reverse-view camera are available at extra cost.
As before, the Picanto is sold with a 5-year/unlimited km warranty (including roadside assistance), as well as a 2-year/30 000 km service plan.
* Fuel calculated at full tank capacity of 35 litres, with cost per litre being R14.83 at two tanks per month. Please note that this is dependent on driver behaviour and the type of traffic customers travel in on a daily basis.

Should I buy one?
Perhaps, but not like this. Presented in mid-rung 3 trim and with the auto ’box fitted, our test car came in at £14,665, which inevitably lines the Picanto up for comparison with rather more accomplished and better-rounded equivalents, even from the slightly larger supermini segment, to which it simply can’t stand up.
In lower specifications, the Picanto recaptures its value edge, and we’d happily stick with the manual ’box for the more pleasurable driving experience and near-£700 saving it offers. Plus, if you can survive with a rudimentary infotainment system (your smartphone means you probably can), then you can forego the touchscreen set-up in favour of a £10 USB cable.

Kia Motors South Africa has added a pair of range-topping X-Line derivatives to its popular Picanto hatchback line-up.
Slotting in at the summit of the Picanto range, the X-Line variants are offered exclusively in 1,2-litre petrol form, with 61 kW and 122 N.m directed to the front axle.
The Picanto X-Line 1,2 features a five-speed manual gearbox and is priced at R237 995. Should you desire one fewer pedal, the Picanto X-Line 1,2 AT is available for R251 995, featuring a four-speed automatic transmission.
So, what sets the X-Line variants apart from the standard Picanto hatch? Well, the moniker brings silver-hued lower bumper trim plus black cladding running over the wheel arches and along the flanks. Both variants ride on 15-inch alloys as standard, with a sunroof included in the price.

Much like the Renault Sandero Stepway and the recently discontinued Toyota Etios Cross, the new Kia Picanto X-Line models are an attempt to blur the lines between the compact hatchback and crossover SUV, blending the affordability and frugality of the former with the style of the latter.
Launching in South Africa this week, the X-Line is perched at the top of the local Picanto line-up, with the five-speed manual version selling for R237 995 and the four-speed auto for R251 995. For the record, the regular Picanto hatchback models are priced between R183 995 and R228 995.
Incidentally, this isn’t the only crossover that Kia plans to launch in 2021, with the larger Sonet compact SUV set to slot between the X-Line and Seltos.
