2017 Mazda MX-5 RF

Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black [UK]

Mazda has added another stylish limited edition model to its UK MX-5 line-up. Marked out by its free-of-charge Eternal Blue Mica paint with contrasting black rear spoiler and door mirrors, the £25,695 Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black goes on sale from the 28th May 2018.

The newcomer follows Mazda's long held tradition of producing distinctive limited edition MX-5s with stand-out looks, enhanced equipment and genuine exclusivity. The black rear spoiler, piano black door mirrors and gunmetal alloy wheels contrast attractively with the Eternal Blue Mica paint, while inside unique floor mats, scuff plates and badging further distinguish this stand out MX-5.

Based on the 2.0-litre 160ps SE-L Nav, the Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black is upgraded with standard leather seats, rain-sensing front wipers, rear parking sensors and automatic headlights, which added to the free-of-charge Mica paint makes this exclusive model great value. In addition, the standard limited slip differential ensures the Sport Black has the dynamic ability to match its looks.

Like the rest of the RF range, the retractable hardtop consists of front, middle and rear roof sections, and a rear screen. When the top is lowered the front and middle portions are stowed together, while the rear glass sits behind the seats, leaving the rear roof section in place to create a unique open-topped look, and a cabin feeling that combines a sense of open air freedom with the impression of being securely ensconced within the car.

Mazda MX-5 RF Sport Black launched as limited-run variant

New model comes exclusively in Eternal Blue Mica paint and is powered by 158bhp 2.0-litre engine

Mazda has launched a limited-run version of its MX-5 RF sports car called Sport Black.

Due in 300 units, the folding hard-top variant comes exclusively in Eternal Blue Mica paint and uses the 158bhp version of Mazda’s atmospheric 2.0-litre engine that sends power rearwards through a standard-fit limited-slip differential.

No changes have been made to the car’s powertrain, so it can hit 62mph in 7.3sec and has a top speed of 133mph.

The new variant gets its name from the black trim added to the exterior. It includes a rear spoiler and mirror covers finished in the shade. The wheels are gunmetal-coloured, while there are leather seats inside.

Since this car builds on the spec of SE-L Nav trim, the Sport Black edition also has rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors and automatic headlights, along with climate control, cruise control, a touchscreen MZD infotainment system and Bluetooth connectivity.

The new variant will make its public debut on 29 April at the MX-5 Owners Club Spring Rally at Goodwood Motor Circuit. It will go on sale on 28 May, priced from £25,695.

This makes the Sport Black edition £100 more expensive than the recently launched MX-5 Z Sport. That car, based on the soft-top version, is also limited to 300 units and gets a raft of additional features including a standard-fit red roof and leather seats.

Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0 Skyactiv-G 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

While this tester has always admired the MX-5 – its spirit, pricing and execution – this is the first one to elicit any profound pangs of desire.

For the money, no other powertrain is this evocative (a GT86 doesn’t even come close) and Mazda gets all the other basics right, if not nails them. There are no meaningful weaknesses and this is a recipe that’ll never go out of fashion.

As for which model to have, so long as you go for the 2.0-litre engine, it doesn’t matter what bodystyle the chassis wears, although the ‘Retractable Fastback’ RF is particularly handsome in the metal and that much more refined at a cruise.

Summary

It's always nice being reacquainted with the world’s most popular open-roof sports car. It’s a one of a kind vehicle and always manages to bring a smile to the fore; even with the changes that’s been brought about. Few cars manage to get that right. But you can’t look away from the fact that the car’s changed. It’s softer, more accommodating, more… limited.

Mazda had a look at the market and adjusted the car to the trend, but those buying the MX-5, in South Africa at least, is a select group of people. Mazda knows this, but still decided to adapt the car for a different market. Was it wrong of Mazda to do it? Probably not, as long as the sales justify it.

But the MX-5 now, in essence, is a different car. And therein, according to me, Mazda made the wrong decision.

REVIEW | Is the Mazda MX-5 RF a weekend special?

I'll make it known upfront that I didn't have great expectations of the MX-5 RF (Retractable Fastback), the reason? It was fitted with an automatic gearbox.

Could that ruin the entire experience and driving pleasure that the diminutive Mazda is well known for. This particular model has been on sale since 2017, I've driven the normal MX-5 (that one had a six-speed manual gearbox) but not the RF.

Mazda South Africa discontinued the soft-top convertible model and only flogs the RF derivative for R538 200.
