2017 Mercedes E-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé, Cabriolet (including E53) handed facelift!

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its facelifted E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet models, refreshing the two-door Mercedes-AMG E53 variants at the same time.

So, what’s new? Well, the LED headlamps have been handed flatter housings, while the interior of the LED taillamps has been reworked and a new grille adopted. Four fresh paint colours have been added to the mix, too, along with more alloy wheel designs (including a fresh “aero” option).

The powertrain line-up, meanwhile, gains electrified petrol and diesel engines, along with new driving assistance systems, the MBUX infotainment system (with two 10,25-inch displays as standard and a pair of 12,3-inch items as an option) and a new generation of “intelligent” steering wheels.

The addition of a 48 V on-board partial electrical system with a recuperation function and integrated starter-alternator offers extra boost (something the Stuttgart-based firm calls “EQ Boost”). This tech has been rolled out to various mills in the range, although the planned engine line-up for South Africa has yet to be confirmed.

Sorry, folks: Still no V8 power for latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed there are still no plans to offer the refreshed E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet with a V8 engine.

Speaking to MotorTrend, Kamelia Brodner, who holds the role of product manager at Mercedes-AMG, confirmed the brand wouldn't extend the "63" badge to the facelifted coupé and cabriolet.

So, just like in the pre-facelift range, the most potent versions of the two-door E-Class models will wear the Mercedes-AMG E53 moniker, each employing an electrified twin-turbo 3,0-litre inline-six delivering 320 kW and 520 N.m to all four corners, with an EQ Boost system briefly adding 16 kW and 250 N.m.

The E-Class sedan, meanwhile, will continue to be offered with the same E53 powertrain as well as the option of a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 (generating 450 kW and 850 N.m) in the flagship Mercedes-AMG E63 S.

Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz E300 Coupe holds a peculiar position in the E-Class Coupe line-up. If you want to buy one simply to proclaim your status and make a style statement, the E200 is more affordable. If you want more urgent performance, the AMG-fettled E53 has you covered. The E300 Coupe, meanwhile, offers a bit more oomph than the E200, which you may never need, but it's certainly nice to have.

The head-turning appearance of the E-Class Coupe is a major selling point, as is its stylish, plush cabin. While the world seems to march inexorably towards an electrically-powered SUV future, it's reassuring to know Mercedes-Benz can still make a well-sorted luxury coupe that will satisfy the brand's (probably more mature) clientele. Make sure you pick the right engine to suit your needs, though.
