New look, better engines for Peugeot 2008

Peugeot will be hoping to bolster its fortunes in the burgeoning compact crossover market with its thoroughly revised 2008, which goes on sale later this week. The little Peugeot gets a more imposing face, as well as a completely new engine line-up, revised infotainment system and a new range-topping GT Line trim level.

Peugeot has also added value at the bottom of the range, with the previous normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine making way for a 1.6-litre HDi turbodiesel, good for 68kW and 230Nm, and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Despite the fact that diesel engines are more expensive to produce, the base price stays the same at R274 900 and we can’t help but wonder if Europe’s sudden distaste for diesel engines, following recent scandals and resultant NOx pollution studies, isn’t what allowed the importer to clinch a better deal on this model.

The top half of the range gets Peugeot’s 1.2-litre PureTech turbopetrol engine, already seen in the 308 and 208. Pushing 81kW and 205Nm, the engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox only.

As is the norm in this segment, all models are front-wheel driven, but it does cater for dirt-road driving with 165mm of ground clearance and M+S all-terrain tyres. Furthermore, the new range-topping GT Line model gets Peugeot’s Grip Control traction system that offers four driver-selectable modes: normal, snow, all-terrain and sand.

The 2008 looks a bit more rugged too, thanks to a more upright grille design and raised bonnet, complemented by black and chrome-masked headlights. The external changes are rounded off by new 3D-style LED tail lights.

As before the 2008 range kicks off with the ‘Active’ trim grade, but even this model is rather well appointed, with standard kit including Peugeot’s latest 18cm touch-screen infotainment system, featuring Bluetooth streaming capability as well as integrated support for the Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink systems.

Also standard on the Active is cruise control, air conditioning, electric windows front and rear, remote central locking, leather-covered steering wheel with reach and height adjustment, 16-inch alloy wheels, six airbags and ESP stability control.

Allure models get 17-inch alloys along with additional chrome embellishments and fog lights with cornering function. Inside it gains half-leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights and wipers, tinted rear windows and a white matrix LED instrument display.

The GT Line (pictured) is set apart by a gloss black exterior package and unique alloy wheels while its infotainment system is kitted out with satellite navigation.

Prices include a three-year / 100 000km warranty and three-year / 45 000km service plan.

Updated Peugeot 2008 arrives in SA with new engines

Peugeot South Africa has launched its facelifted 2008 range in South Africa, with the new line-up comprising four derivatives.

The expanded local range starts with the Active 1,6 HDi (in manual) for R274 900 and runs through to the GT Line 1,2 PureTech (in automatic) for R349 900. That means the naturally aspirated 1,6-litre petrol mill used across the pre-facelift line-up has been culled.

So, the 2017 line-up includes these two new engine choices, two transmission choices and three trim levels.

The 1,6-litre HDi turbodiesel engine is mated exclusively to a five-speed manual gearbox, and powers the two cheapest models in the range. It makes 68 kW and 230 N.m, with the latter on tap from just 1 750 r/min, sprinting from standstill to 100 km/h in 11,5 seconds before topping out at 181 km/h. Claimed combined fuel consumption comes in at just 4,0 L/100 km.

The 1,2-litre turbopetrol engine, meanwhile, is married to a new six-speed automatic transmission and provides urge to the two most expensive variants. This three-cylinder engine is worth 81 kW and 205 N.m (with peak torque arriving at 1 500 r/min), enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 10,1 seconds and a top speed of 188 km/h. And the claimed fuel consumption? Peugeot reckons it is good for 5,4 L/100 km.

All models feature a three-year or 100 000 km warranty and a three-year or 45 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km).

Look out for a full road test of the Peugeot 2008 1,6 HDi Allure model in our upcoming April 2017 issue…

2017 Peugeot 2008 crossover SUV arrives in SA

• New six-speed automatic
• Four models, three spec levels
• Auto or manual gearboxes, FWD only
• Stronger focus on SUV character

Peugeot has unveiled a mid-life update for its 2008 SUV that places a stronger emphasis on the 2008 SUV’s all-terrain DNA.

The new 2008 SUV model range will be launched locally on March 17.

Overview

The automaker says the interior has been upgraded to match the design and execution standards set by the award-winning 308 hatchback. The new i-Cockpit now includes a generous 18m colour touch-screen display, with latest-generation connectivity and ergonomics.

The 2017 Peugeot 2008 SUV range consists of four models, spanning two engine choices, two transmission choices and three trim levels. The highly-specced Active model provides the entry point to the refreshed 2008 SUV range, and is offered in conjunction with a 1.6-litre HDI turbo-diesel engine, coupled to a five-speed manual.

The two Allure models occupy the 2008 SUV range’s middle ground. The first links the Active’s turbo diesel engine and manual gearbox to the more comprehensive standard equipment list and elegant execution associated with the Allure package.

The second Allure model introduces the second drivetrain offered in the 2008 SUV line-up; the PureTech 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, coupled with a new six-speed auto. The high-specification Allure package is identical for both models.

Assuming the flagship role, and introducing the GT Line trim level to the 2008 SUV for the first time, the 2008 GT Line boasts a sporty, crimson-themed execution inside and out, and an even more extensive list of features, to Peugeot’s advanced PureTech turbo petrol engine and six-speed auto. The technical specification is identical to that of the Allure 1.2 PureTech Auto version.

Design

The redesigned aesthetics of the new Peugeot 2008 SUV provide the compact SUV with an assertive and adventurous character that clearly sets it apart from its more car-like predecessor.

The changes are mostly marked at the front of the vehicle. A bolder, more upright grille with an intricate, multifaceted grid design and a prominent Peugeot Lion emblem creates a resolute and contemporary impression, flanked on either side by the sleek, elongated shape of the black and chrome-masked headlights.

The raised bonnet is also new, contributing to the model’s more purposeful appearance, while the front and rear bumpers, sill protectors and wheel arch surrounds are finished in a contrasting black.

A raised ride height offers 165mm of ground clearance.

Inside

All three trim levels, the Active, Allure and GT Line. Attractive cloth upholstery is standard on the Active model, while the Allure and GT Line variants get half-leather upholstery with a contemporary, high-tech design.

Common to all is Peugeot’s latest iteration of the i-Cockpit concept, an innovative interior arrangement that combines a small, gripping steering wheel with a clearly legible instrument set and an unencumbered view of the road ahead.

The high-res display in the instrument binnacle is a white LED display in the case of the Active, a white matrix display in the case of the Allure versions, and a colour matrix display on the GT Line. Binnacle illumination colour also varies according to model: white on the Active, blue for the Allure models, and red for GT Line.

However, the centrepiece of the new 2008 SUV’s dashboard is undoubtedly the large, centrally located colour touch-screen display, which is standard across the range. The 18cm touch screen is located directly above the centre stack, and offers intuitive access to the Peugeot’s infotainment system.

The infotainment system includes integrated support for Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink, which allow selected smartphone features to be displayed on the touchscreen display.

Satnav is standard on GT Line models.

Standard equipment includes remote central locking, power windows and side-mirrors, aircon (full climate control on Allure and GT Line versions), rear park assist and hill start assistance all included.

The spacious interior is augmented by a generous 410 litre luggage compartment, which can be extended to 1400 litres by folding the split rear bench seat flat. A low loading sill and wide-opening tailgate ensure convenient access to the boot, which houses a full-sized spare wheel.

This engine offers up peak outputs of 68 kW and 230 Nm, and is claimed to consume just 4.0 L/100 km.

Next up are the 2 Allure models, with the first combining the turbodiesel motor with a manual gearbox, and the second featuring the 1.2-litre turbocharged turbopetrol motor mated to the new 6-speed automatic transmission. The warranty & service plan kills it for me. 3yr/100km & 3yr/45km? No thanks. Not for a french car with unproven reliability.

OK, apparently the warranty can be extend to 5 years/unlimited KM's. All in all, the car is quite good value for money when you consider all the features. I quite fancy the 1.2 AT for R325k...
GT Line just seems like a waste of money - R25k for sat nav and red stitching.

My view is that this time around Pug SA has a done a great job with optimizing the local 2008 range.

More models; clear differentiation. Pricing is relatively keen. We know standard kit is pretty much class best.

The pap 1.6 N/A gasoline is binned. We know the PSA group 1.2T gasoline engine is an excellent motor & has won a numbers of awards.

Hopefully this updated 2008 & new 3008 in May can bring in some fortunes for Pug SA.

I have harped on in the past with the Peugeot heritage in SA.

Agreed. Do wish the 2008 had a reverse camera like it does in the EU. Happy they woke up and introduced an AT variant in SA. I'm sure that's a large part of the reason it was a terrible seller in the past.
Can't wait to see the 3008 offering in SA. Hope the pricing is keen too.
