The (minor) update of the 4th Renaultsport Clio...check out those nifty chequered flag LED's + optional Akrapovič exhaust system from the Clio R.S 16 concept car

"The new Renault Clio RS 200 EDC, Clio RS Trophy and Clio GT-Line incorporate the advances offered by the new Clio and further enhance that package by drawing on Renault Sport's wealth of knowledge and expertise. "The new Clio RS offers the full spectrum of Renault Sport technology for immediate driving pleasure. At launch, each customer will be able to choose from three types of chassis and two powerplants. The model also inaugurates the highly efficient and innovative RS VISION lighting system, Renault Sport's exclusive lighting signature," announced Patrice Ratti, CEO, Renault Sport Cars.

Exhaust line, power output, chassis: a unique package in its segment

The new Renault Clio RS is available with a choice of two petrol engines (200hp and 220hp) on the Trophy version, mated to six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifts.

It is the only car in its class to offer three different types of chassis, giving customers the opportunity to 'tailor-build' their own Clio RS The options are a Sport chassis with 17- or 18-inch wheels, emphasising versatility and everyday use; a strengthened Cup chassis with 18-inch wheels, providing the perfect blend of road and circuit driving characteristics; or a Trophy chassis with 18-inch wheels, lowered by 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear to place the focus firmly on driving pleasure.

Uniquely in its segment, the Trophy version can be specified with an exclusive exhaust system inspired by the Clio R.S 16 concept car and developed in tandem with industry specialist Akrapovič which imbues the engine with an instantly recognisable sound and ensures sprightly acceleration. Patrice Ratti says, "We are working with renowned suppliers committed to motorsport such as Akrapovič to forge ever stronger links between the track and the road".

The 200hp powerplant is available with the Sport and Cup chassis, while the 220hp unit can be selected for the Trophy variants. The 220hp Trophy version is capable of out-performing all other sporty vehicles in its class, taking just 6.6 seconds to sprint from 0-100kph, 14.5 seconds to cover 400m from a standing start and going on to reach a top speed of 235kph.

The Renault Clio RS also innovates with an unprecedented equipment package for the segment, including Launch Control, the RS Drive system which enables a choice of three driving modes (Normal, Sport and Race), the RS Monitor application and hydraulic compression bump stops developed by Renault Sport for rallying.

RS VISION: a world first for additional multi-faceted LED lighting technology

The front end of the new Renault Clio RS is visually broader by virtue of a specific front bumper, and the car is completed by LED multi-faceted lighting in the form of a chequered flag called RS Vision, for a distinctive look and outstanding lighting performance. This exclusive technology, initially seen on the Clio RS 16 concept car, co-ordinates the vehicle's fog lights, cornering lights, side lights and dipped and main beams to enhance night-time visibility.

The new Renault Clio RS also offers new 18-inch wheels and specific sills. At the rear can be found a sporty spoiler, a functional diffuser and a twin exhaust tail pipe, while the rear lights carry over the C-shaped lighting signature. The Renault Sport (RS) logo appears underneath the Renault badge at the front of the car, on the wheels and at the rear."

UPDATED RENAULT CLIO RS HITS SA! HERE’S HOW MUCH

The facelifted, fourth-generation Renault Clio RS has finally arrived in South Africa, joining the cooking versions (and GT-Line variants) in the local line-up, with two high-performance derivatives on offer.

The Clio RS will be available in South Africa in both Lux and Trophy guise (no mention is made of the mid-range Cup version), with the Trophy featuring more equipment, an uprated chassis and more power. Both, however, are offered exclusively with the French brand’s six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic transmission. So, again, no manual option here…

The Clio RS Lux derivative makes 147 kW and runs on 17-inch alloys, while the Trophy variant bumps the turbocharged 1,6-litre engine’s peak power output to 162 kW. The flagship furthermore rides on 18-inch wheels (wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber) and is lowered a further 20 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear (that’s the hard-core Trophy chassis, then).

The Trophy model also features an Akrapovič exhaust system as standard, with Renault claiming a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6,6 seconds and a top speed of 235 km/h.

Both models come standard with a five-year or 150 000 km warranty and a three-year or 30 000km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km). The only optional extras come in the form of paint choices: metallic will cost you an extra R2 500 while Sirius Yellow or Frost Pearl White come in at R10 000 apiece.

Pricing:

Renault Clio RS 200 EDC Lux: R379 900
Renault Clio RS 220 EDC Trophy: R419 900
[The pre-facelift Clio RS 200 Cup model, for the record, was priced at R399 900.]

Renault Clio RS (2017) Specs and Pricing

Renault South Africa has launched the facelifted Clio RS in South Africa! Take a look at specification and pricing for this performance derivative of the Clio hatchback...

Renault's Renault Sport (RS) division has a formidable track record when it comes to exciting hot hatchbacks and all versions of the Clio RS and Megane RS have been popular over the years. Now, an updated Clio RS is available in South Africa!

From launch, there will be two derivatives: Clio RS Lux and Clio RS Trophy. Visually, there'll be a few cues to differentiate these RS models from lesser Clios. Big alloy wheels (17-inch on the Lux, 18-inch on the Trophy) with sporty bumpers, prominent exhaust tips and the RS logo-styled lights are key differentiators. The Lux has a sports chassis, while the Trophy sits lower and has a racing trophy chassis.

The Renault Clio RS Trophy: 162 kW of fast yellow French hatchback.

Engine and Outputs

There's one engine with two states of tune available. The Renault Clio RS Lux features a 1.6-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine with 147 kW and 250 Nm, while the Trophy boasts 162 kW and 250Nm, but with an overboost function that takes the torque output to 280 Nm. Both vehicles feature a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, with power going to the front wheels. No need for a manual gearbox as this dual-clutch transmission features launch control. With these numbers, we think the Clio RS Trophy will be able to scare and possibly embarrass bigger machinery.

Performance is brisk, with the Trophy being the quicker of the two with a zero to 100 kph time of 6.6 seconds. It'll top out at 235 kph and if you're not racing around, it's claimed to consume 5.9 L/100 km.

Specifications

The cabin of the Renault Clio RS is sporty and generously equipped.

This is the first time a Trophy-badged Clio RS is available in South Africa and it'll offer the closest experience to a race car. It features high-performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, a hardcore sporty chassis, Akrapovic exhaust and 320 mm ventilated disc brakes.

Both vehicles have the following features as standard:

Onboard navigation via the 7-inch touchscreen
Multimedia, radio and telephone systems with Bluetooth connectivity
Cruise control with speed limiter
Rain sensors
Light sensors
Hands-free card key
ABS, EBD and emergency brake assist (EBA)
New generation ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) active traction control, ensuring the vehicle remains stable even in difficult road conditions
HSA (Hill Start Assist) effectively preventing the vehicle from rolling when trying to pull away, or on an up or down gradient
Driver and passenger head & chest front and side airbags
Height adjustable driver and passenger seat belts with pretensions and load limiters and 3 front and rear ISOFIX seat attachments
A rear diffuser, twin exhaust and LED taillights dominate the rear of the Renault Clio RS.

Renault Clio RS - Price in South Africa (May 2017)

The Renault Clio RS is sold with a 5-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty. A 3-year/30 000 km service plan applies, with service intervals at 10 000 km. Metallic paint is an option at R2 500, and you might want the limited edition colours such as Sirius Yellow and Frost Pearl White for an additional R10 000.

New Clio RS hits SA in two hot flavours

Having already launched the regular versions of its facelifted Clio hatchback range late last year and then the warm-performing GT-Line last month, Renault SA has now turned up the heat all the way to max with the release of two high-performance RS models.

The upgraded RS will be available in two flavours: RS Lux (hot) and RS Trophy (extra hot).

The pair are powered by Renault’s 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine, tuned to 147kW in the Lux and 162kW in the Trophy, both producing their power at 6050rpm. Both are good for 260Nm of twist, however the Trophy has an extra 20Nm available on overboost. The two versions also share a six-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox with steering-mounted paddles.

Yet whereas the Lux (above) has newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels and a more balanced ‘sports’ chassis configured with everyday driving in mind, the Trophy (below) gains gloss black 18-inch alloys with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, a lower and more hard-core ‘Trophy’ chassis as well as an Akrapovic exhaust system and the satisfaction of not sharing its name with a bar of soap.

As for styling, the facelift brings new C-shaped LED lights and a bolder bumper incorporating a chequered-flag-shaped adaptive lighting system below the headlights. The RS is also set apart by unique taillights, spoiler and rear bumper, with the latter incorporating a real working diffuser and twin exhaust pipes.

Shouty cabin decor comes in the form of red detailing around the air vents, red stitching on the steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake, and sport bucket seats, upholstered in black leather in the Trophy’s case. As with regular Clios, the central dashboard gets a fresh design.

The standard features list includes Launch Control, RS Drive configurator and Monitor, 17.8cm touch-screen audio and navigation system, cruise control, auto lights and wipers and a start button.

Prices, listed below, include a five-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and three-year/30 000km service plan.

Renault's hottest Clio yet: RS joins SA's hot hatch battle

• New Clio RS in South Africa
• Exterior & interior F1-inspired enhancements
• RS Vision LEDs
• Flagship Clio Trophy version

Hot off the heels of its updated fourth-generation Clio, in May 2017, Renault has launched its new RS hot hatch in South Africa.

The Clio RS is available in two flavours, Lux and Trophy, the former delivers 147kW/260Nm from its 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, while the Trophy delivers 162kW and 280kW. Both are mated to a six-speed EDC dual-clutch automatic sending power to the front wheels.

Two different types of chassis are available; the LUX model, with its 17” wheels is tailored for everyday use while the Trophy (18" wheels) chassis is lowered by 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear for a more engaging experience on the road.

The new hot hatch receives a makeover for 2017 with style tweaks including the introduction of new LEDs dubbed RS Vision.

It's a formidable hot hatch but so are its competitors (i.e Ford Fiesta ST, Polo GTI). How does the latest Clio RS fare?

Overall it's 'business as usual' from Renault Sport..

Prices:

Clio RS 200 EDC LUX - R379 900
Clio RS 220 EDC TROPHY - R419 900

Options
Metallic paint - R2500
Special metallic paint: Yellow & White - R10 000

As with the rest of the Renault range, new Clio RS units are sold with a 5-year or 150 000km warranty, 6-year anti-corrosion warranty. A 3-year or 30 000km service plan applies, with service intervals at 10 000km.

Design

In terms of design, changes are subtle with the its prominent new signature LED lighting and chromed trim along the bottom of the grille. The grille housing the Renault diamond logo has been redesigned.

The interior doesn't differ much from the standard Clio. Its aluminum pedals, red stitching on the steering wheel and sport logos display its RS roots. The latest RS benefits from higher quality materials, more refined trim, redesigned steering wheel, door panels, central air vents and LED cabin lighting. Overall it's a lot more sophisticated inside than it's hot hatch exterior might elude to.

Performance

My route behind the wheel of the hot hatch saw the RS tackle undulating bends through Slanghoek in Rawsonville and the famous twists of Franschhoek pass to demonstrate the car’s canny tuning.

Precise steering, great chassis, incredible grip... the RS is eager to get to grips with any road challenge, especially in Trophy guise, provided you don't encounter any bumps along the tar. Poor road surfaces in SA will expose its greatest shortcomings, most notably a harsh ride from its significantly stiffer springs. Don't get me wrong, its handling is faultless, it's sad that SA's poor roadways will more often than not result in the Trophy's stiff suspension to pick up the smallest blemish on the road.

Its Akrapovic exhaust delivers a great note when you apply the throttle but nowhere near as sonorous as the Megane RS. It's a very decent hot hatch and incredibly fun to drive.

The RS takes the best qualities of the Clio (space for four, adequate boot, great tech) and elevates it with a good 'box, brisk engine and spirited ride. Its paddle shifts, a product of Renault's involvement in Formula 1, allows greater speed and control over gear shifts.

Overall, it has awesome amounts of power, 'track-tuned' handling and its on-board driving telemetry should quench a petrolhead's thirst for one-upping their biggest road rival - themselves.

RS features

Unique to its segment, the Trophy has an exclusive Akrapovic exhaust system for great sound, and performance.

The new hot hatch is fitted with Launch Control, RS Drive and RS Monitor.

Launch Control system: Emulates, says Renault, a "true drag race experience" enabling
take-off with limited wheel spin.
RS Drive: Three driving modes Normal, Sport and Race.
The RS Monitor: Performance tracking system providing the driver with real-time data. It collects data and enables drives to record and replay previous drives..

The RS is also fitted with an electronic differential.
