Upcoming hot variant of the Kodiaq will sport more aggressive styling and power
Skoda will launch a hot vRS version of the Kodiaq SUV next year.
The variant of the seven-seat machine is still in development, and no details of the powertrain are available. However, sources describe the model as having "lots of torque" suggesting it could have a diesel engine, as with the Octavia vRS.
There is also likely to be a petrol version, like the Octavia vRS, but the focus will be on diesel, because the bulk of the Kodiaq market is diesel. It is expected to have standard four-wheel drive.
The Kodiaq vRS will feature some design tweaks, which are likely to include more aggressive bumper styling elements and extra trim around the windows and front grilles.
The hot Kodiaq is likely to prove popular in Germany and the UK in particular. In Britain, vRS models account for around 20% of Skoda's sales.
Skoda says it will consider vRS versions of certain models where there is demand.
Skoda will also launch a coupé variant of the Kodiaq in the Chinese market, which will be manufactured in that country. While there are no plans to bring it to Europe yet. It is understood the model could eventually be introduced here if the brand believes there is demand and production capacity can be found.

Should I buy one?
If you want a well-equipped, good-looking SUV with plenty of space, the Kodiaq absolutely should be on your shopping list. Whether the Sportline deserves your attention will rely entirely on taste.
In pure value for money terms the Kodiaq SE L with the same 187bhp diesel four-pot, which can be had from £33,320, offers much of the same and only loses out on the Sportline’s bolstered chairs and performance trim, so may appear the better deal. But for some, those sport additions will be worth every penny, not least because they’re key in setting the Sportline apart from the large number of lower-spec Kodiaqs that fill our streets.
To many, not even the top Kodiaq will have the same level of desirability as a Land Rover Discovery Sport or BMW X3. But neither of those options will be so generously specced at this price.

Performance SUV will cement Skoda’s vRS arm, sitting alongside existing Octavia vRS; it's been put to the test at the 'Ring
Skoda has set a Nürburgring lap record in its upcoming Kodiaq vRS hot SUV, with famed 'Ring driver Sabine Schmitz behind the wheel.
The hot Kodiaq set the lap record for fastest seven-seat SUV around the infamous circuit, completing the 12.94-mile Nordschleife in 9:29.84 minutes - 2:43.96 minutes slower than the four-wheel drive lap record set by the Nio EP9 last year, and 1:38.14 minutes slower than the current SUV lap record holder, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.
Development of the upcoming hot Skoda Kodiaq vRS is well under way, ahead of its launch later this year at the Paris motor show. Autocar confirmed the model last year, and spy photographers previously caught the first glimpse of the car testing at the Nürburgring.
It will be the second model in Skoda’s vRS line-up, which currently only consists of the Octavia vRS. The UK and Germany will be sales hot spots for the hot Kodiaq given that, in Britain, 20% of Octavia sales are of the vRS version.
A 2.0-litre diesel biturbo engine delivering 237bhp, already used in the Volkswagen Tiguan, is expected under the bonnet of the Kodiaq vRS, according to Autocar sources. It is also likely to make it into the next Octavia vRS, which is due in 2020. A source told Autocar that the Kodiaq vRS will have “lots of torque”. The Octavia vRS is available in both petrol and diesel, but the bulk of sales are for the latter.
Skoda has confirmed that the Kodiaq vRS will also get Dynamic Chassis Control - the VW Group's adaptive suspension system used across high-end cars in the VW, Seat and Skoda brands. It'll offer different drive modes, similar to the Octavia vRS, so Eco, Comfort, Normal and Sport will all feature. It's not yet clear if off-road focused drive modes will also feature.
The VW Tiguan 2.0 BiTDi BMT 240 4Motion produces 240bhp and 369lb ft of torque. These help the Tiguan accelerate to 62mph in 6.5sec — or the same as a current-generation Ford Focus ST or Lotus Elise Sport. Top speed is 142mph — the same as a Ford Fiesta ST200.
The Kodiaq vRS is likely to come close to these figures but, given its extra heft, probably won't match them. By comparison, the Octavia vRS TDI 4x4, which has 181bhp and 280lb ft of torque, reaches 62mph in 7.6sec and also tops out at 142mph.
The performance SUV is likely to get the four-wheel drive system from the Octavia vRS as standard, rather than being offered in front-wheel drive form with 4WD as an option.
Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier confirmed to Autocar earlier this year that there will be a Skoda Kodiaq vRS later this year, but remained coy about its performance arm beyond that. He said: “VRS has been successful for a number of years in some markets. That is why we are thinking about it for other models as well. We have our biggest campaign yet ahead of us by 2020. We have to filter out which ideas customers want most and which help the brand best.”
The brand previously sold a Fabia vRS, before ending production in 2013 due to poor sales. However, Skoda is understood to be planning a return to the hot hatchback market with a Fabia vRS hybrid in 2020.

The new machine is the first SUV to feature the high-performance vRS badge, and company boss Bernhard Maier called it “the new spearhead in our SUV offering".
The Kodiaq vRS, which will be offered with either five or seven seats, features a 237bhp 2.0-litre biturbo direct injection diesel with 369lb ft from 1750-2500rpm. It has a claimed 0-62mph time of seven seconds and top speed of 137mph. Skoda claims it has fuel consumption of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 157g/km, both measured on the soon-to-be-replaced NEDC cycle.
The machine features a seven-speed DSG gearbox, variable all-wheel-drive and, for the first time in a Skoda, dynamic sound boost. The Kodiaq vRS also features adaptive chassis control, which includes six drive modes and electronically adjusted shock absorbers. Progressive steering is also included as standard.
The Kodiaq vRS features a number of subtle design tweaks to differentiate it from the regular model, including bespoke front and rear bumpers, vRS logos, gloss black bodywork elements and a new design of 20in alloy wheel. The car also introduces Skoda's redesigned vRS logo, which now has a red V and stripe ahead of the RS, in place of the green currently used. This logo will replace the current logo on all vRS models in the future.

The sound booster is more annoying than inspiring, especially as this diesel is so smooth, but mostly this is a well-designed five or seven-seater providing a spacious, convenient cabin, strong cruising ability and confident handling.

Should I buy one?
Like any Kodiaq, the vRS will slip into your life with barely a ripple. As a family SUV, it should ride more placidly than it does, but this is true for any other model in the line-up, and you still get cavernous interior dimensions along with arguably the least demanding driving experience of any car in this class.
However, at nearly £43,000, you begin to wonder whether this particular version seems too much of an expensive marketing experiment. It's a bit of an odd mix: a bi-turbo diesel engine in an otherwise unashamedly utilitarian car, only with plenty of bling and a bombastic but fake exhaust note. The Kodiaq vRS is effortlessly quick and surefooted, yes, but not to the extent that it comfortably outclasses its rangemates.
Moreover, a similarly priced BMW X3 isn’t such as big a character as the rippling vRS, but its handling is more cohesive, its interior less pretentious and, with a half-dozen cylinders, its powertrain far sweeter. The only question is whether you're prepared to lose the third row of seats.
