"Subaru of America Inc. announced a comprehensive update to the 2017 Subaru BRZ including improved handling, increased performance, more aggressive styling and new convenience features. These enhancements continue the company's original mission of offering enthusiasts a pure sports car with an unmatched driving experience.

The Subaru BRZ, known for its ultra-low center of gravity and precision handling, offers several updates to increase its performance on the track and open roads. For improved responsiveness, stability and comfort, BRZ receives updated coil springs and dampers as well as a larger rear stabilizer bar. Additional reinforcements to the chassis were added to the strut tower braces, transmission cross-member plate and the rear wheel housings to increase Subaru BRZ's rigidity. The stability control system thresholds are raised to further improve handing. The results are dramatic enough for Subaru to change the name of "Sport" mode to "Track".

The Subaru BRZ 2.0-liter SUBARU BOXER engine receives several internal updates for friction reduction including new valves, camshaft and cylinder heads. Accompanied with a new aluminum intake manifold and redesigned exhaust manifold for increased air flow, the engine output in models with the 6-speed manual transmission is increased to 205-hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. Also, a lower final drive ratio from 4.1 to 4.3:1, paired with the standard Torsen limited-slip differential, improves acceleration on models with manual transmission.

Now standard on all models is Incline Start Assist. This system holds the vehicle momentarily in position while the driver accelerates to prevent roll back on an incline."

Subaru's rear-drive sports coupe gets a revamp, following Toyota's update of the closely related GT86 earlier this year

The Subaru BRZ has been subjected to a thorough update, with tweaks to the styling – inside and out – engine, suspension and more.

The most notable revision to the BRZ isn’t a physical change on the car, but to the car’s spec sheet. From spring, when the facelifted car goes on sale, it will be available in only one trim level: SE Lux.

The current BRZ is available in two trim levels – SE and SE Lux - suggesting that the car’s entry-level price may rise from the £23,495 of the manual SE Navigation, to the £23,995 Subaru charges for the SE Lux, without navigation. Prices have not yet been released for the facelifted car, however.

On the inside, a 4.2in screen has been added to the instrument panel, displaying functions associated with track driving such as a lap timer, brake and g force readout. There's also a new, smaller-diameter steering wheel, similar to that applied to the BRZ's Toyota GT86 twin. Audio controls have been added on the wheel, and the interior now features Alcantara throughout.

Subaru claims that powertrain and suspension updates improve the car’s handling. The strength of the engine block has been increased, while the rocker arms have been reduced in weight and friction has been reduced on the camshaft. All of these, Subaru claims, contribute to greater fuel efficiency, although official figures are still to be confirmed, said a Subaru spokesman.

The suspension has been fettled to transmit fewer vibrations into the cabin than before, as well as allowing the car to corner flatter through corners. A Track mode has also been added to the car’s drive mode selector.

Updated Subaru BRZ makes UK debut at Autosport International

Subaru's rear-drive sports coupé gets a revamp, following Toyota's update of the closely related GT86 last year

The Subaru BRZ facelift has made its UK debut at today's Autosport International event, with the first right-hand drive example displaying the model's minor styling tweaks.

New headlights now feature different day running lights, and the front bumper gets redesigned side vents. At the back, the bootlid wears a small rear wing, and the taillights themselves have been changed.

These minor aesthetic tweaks come with changes to the car's trim list. When it goes on sale in the spring, the 2017 BRZ will be available in only one trim level: SE Lux.

If We Want More Small Fun Coupes, We're Going To Need A Subaru BRZ STi

While I was more than happy with the amount of power in the latest Toyota-badged Toyobaru, the 2017 Toyota 86, I realize that its continued existence relies on the approval of the masses who aren’t me. Those masses would really appreciate it if Subaru’s STi branch slapped a turbo on that lil’ 205 horsepower flat-four. If you like the Toyobaru twins at all, you should probably join in the calls for the same thing.

Sales for the Toyobarus keep dropping year after year, as Car & Driver notes that its biggest demand was early on. People who wanted the niche sports car bought them early, and since then, sales figures have dropped sharply for both the Subaru and Scion (now Toyota) versions.

Of course, there aren’t a lot of choices if you want a fixed-roof, rear-wheel-drive coupe that isn’t a muscle car, or doesn’t cost over $30,000. The Toyobaru is the only car filling that niche at the moment, and that’s not good, either. We need more fun, small, less expensive cars to choose from, which would have the added benefit of forcing Subaru and Toyota to make the Toyobarus better in response.

When the Toyobaru was at the height of its demand, we saw something magical: other car makers were considering joining in the small, fun, rear-wheel-drive coupe game. In 2014, when sales were still acceptable for the Toyobaru twins, Jalopnik’s Patrick George noted:
Another point: Nissan just greenlit the IDx Concept to apparently do battle with the Toyobaru, and the Kia GT4 Stinger looks poised to do the same. Would other automakers explore this niche if the FR-S and BRZ were a failure? I doubt it.

Since the FR-S and BRZ have dropped off in sales, however, all hopes of getting the Nissan IDx have disappeared, and the Kia GT4 Stinger dropped off the face of the earth. Now we’re all left wondering how long Toyota and Subaru will even keep the Toyobaru around.
Automakers play it too safe with the kinds of cool cars we love as enthusiasts. It’s frustrating, because that means we rarely get what we want. That being said, there’s an easy way to get enthusiasm and sales back to the Toyobaru, such that it might convince other automakers to jump into the same niche: make a more powerful, totally silly Subaru BRZ STi, or whatever the Toyota equivalent would be.

Give more power to the people, because it’s what they want. I don’t think it would even matter which marque made the Super-yota. Subaru has more ardent fanboys and all thing STi are their one true love in this world, but the calls for more power aren’t limited to your local Cars ‘N’ Vape meet.

The added bonus, of course, is that I’m sure Subaru and Toyota could sell a few extra base models by wooing enthusiasts in the door with the high-powered version. After all, how on earth did you think I ended up with a Lancer? “The Evo is really good” was a convincing argument in its base model’s favor.

While I have no want for a Toyota 86 with turbo lag, even I’m baffled as to why there hasn’t been an upgraded, more powerful version made yet. As a fan of small coupes, it’s only prudent that the rest of us join in the calls to give us a BRZ STi.

Sell more cars by giving people the BRZ STi they’e been begging for, and then there’s plenty of room in the budget to come up with the next truly great little coupes.

Hotter Subaru BRZ STi teased

Ever since the first reveal of the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 twins, criticism around their relative lack of power has been the talk of the forums. Unperturbed, the recently facelifted Toyota 86 has since been launched with no additional power. Based on this teaser tweet from its official account, however, Subaru may be set to answer the call with a forthcoming BRZ STi offering.

Said to be based on the Subaru STI Performance Concept revealed about two years ago, it introduces a stiffer suspension and conclusive aerodynamic kit. Based on the teased image of a carbon fibre rear wing, the BRZ STi looks like it may, indeed, retain some version of that aero kit.

While enthusiasts will be hoping for a turbocharged variant of the 2,0-litre flat-four engine in the proposed BRZ STi, as covered previously with the first tease of the car, the engine bay appears too compact to be able to accommodate forced induction. Given this, any increase in power is likely to be fairly conservative.

The Subaru BRZ STi is set for an official reveal on 8 June 2017. There’s no word yet whether this model will also be available as a Toyota 86 GRMN as well.

Subaru BRZ STI confirmed in preview image

Subaru has released a single image of its upcoming hot BRZ STI model, which is due to be revealed in early June

The Subaru BRZ STI is coming, with carbonfibre aero parts and the possibility of more power from its boxer engine.

Subaru hinted at the car on social media, simply captioning a photo of the BRZ with STI-branded carbonfibre rear wing with 'Stay tuned…6/8/17. #STI'.

The first part of the text may hint at a higher state of tune for the BRZ’s 2.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-four engine. Subaru’s only other STI-badged model is the WRX STI, successor to the Impreza WRX STI.

The standard WRX sports saloon, which isn't available in the UK, produces 268bhp, where the WRX STI produces 305bhp; an increase of almost 14%, thanks to direct injection, turbocharging and Dual Active Valve Control.

The standard WRX's engine is a developed version of the BRZ's, so it’s possible that the changes would be carried over to the BRZ STI, or alternatively, the WRX STI's 2.5-litre engine will be shared with the BRZ STI.

The standard BRZ weighs 1231kg, with 55% of its weight over the rear wheels and 45% over the fronts.

The BRZ costs from £25,040, so the STI model could well cost more than £30,000. In this price bracket, it would have the Lotus Elise to contend with.

Subaru takes the wraps off WRX STI Type RA and BRZ tS

After a teaser campaign that had Subaru fans salivating, the US arm of the Japanese automaker has finally revealed two new performance models: the Subaru WRX STI Type RA and the Subaru BRZ tS, with each special edition limited to 500 units.

While some were hoping that the latter would finally feature forced induction (and thus more oomph), it turns out that isn’t the case. So, still no STI version of the BRZ, then.

Subaru says the “RA” designation in the limited edition WRX STI model stands for “Record Attempt”, and makes reference to a track model that will attempt a Nürburgring speed record in the near future.

According to Subaru, the WRX STI Type RA – with its Cherry Blossom Red accents around the front mesh grille and new rear bumper cover – delivers “increased performance” through weight reduction, suspension tweaks and engine upgrades. It comes standard with a carbon-fibre roof panel, a carbon-fibre pedestal wing and lightweight BBS 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in 245/35 R19 Yokohama Advan Sports rubber. In addition, the spare wheel has been dumped to save weight.

The vehicle is still powered by a 2,5-litre turbocharged Boxer engine, but peak power has been increased to around 231 kW (four units up) thanks to an STI-specified cold air intake, a high-flow performance exhaust, a retuned ECU and “stronger pistons”. In addition, the six-speed manual transmission features a revised third gear ratio paired with a short throw shifter.

Meanwhile, handling has been upgraded thanks to inverted front struts and rear double wishbone suspension, all with Bilstein dampers. Subaru says a modified multi-mode VDC gives the car “better stability control”, while the Brembo brake system, with monoblock six-piston front calipers and dual-piston rear calipers, comes with a silver finish and is paired with cross-drilled discs.

And the BRZ tS? Well, Subaru says this model delivers “pure handling delight” thanks to STI-tuned front and rear Sachs dampers and coil springs as well as flexible V-braces in the engine compartment. New draw stiffeners are added to the chassis and sub-frame to improve steering response.

Furthermore, the Subaru BRZ tS is equipped with 18-inch lightweight STI wheels shod with 215/40 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. Brembo brakes round out the package.

As you would no doubt have noticed, the exterior also adds a more aggressive look with an in-your-face (manually adjustable) STI rear carbon-fibre spoiler, as well as STI front, rear and side underspoilers. The BRZ tS adorned with the same Cherry Blossom Red accents as the WRX STI above, while the foglamps have been removed and replaced with STI covers.

And the 2,0-litre Boxer-four under the BRZ’s bonnet? Well, that stays untouched…
