Watch the 2017 Subaru Impreza ace its crash-test…

New crash-test footage of the redesigned Subaru Impreza shows how the sedan scored top marks in the United States for crash protection.

The US-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has given both the sedan and station wagon versions of the updated Impreza its coveted Top Safety Pick+ award.

The vehicle earned “good” ratings in the institute’s five crash-worthiness tests, with the video below showing the small overlap evaluation.

In addition, the IIHS tests front crash prevention systems fitted to contenders. The optional EyeSight system fitted to the Subaru showed in testing that it was able to avoid a collision up to 40 km/h.

The Impreza was also praised for having a strong headlamp system, when equipped with LED lights and automatic high-beam assist, as well as for its ease of use of latch hardware for installing child restraints.

Interestingly, the redesigned 2017 Subaru Impreza is the only small car to earn top marks in all IIHS evaluations.

NEW SUBARU IMPREZA AND LEVORG CONFIRMED FOR SA!

Subaru Southern Africa has confirmed that the new Impreza will arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2017, with the Levorg wagon set to follow in the following quarter.

The new XV and updated WRX and WRX STI are also scheduled to arrive around the same period.

The Levorg wagon shares its platform with the Impreza and Legacy, and employs the Japanese brand’s familiar 197 kW/350 N.m 2,0-litre turbocharged flat-four engine linked to an all-wheel-drive system.

Subaru describes the Levorg as “a seamless crossbreed of performance vehicle and family wagon, all packaged in a stylish yet undeniably sporty design”.

The Levorg that will arrive in local showrooms in the third quarter of the year will be the 2018-spec model, which features updates in exterior and interior styling as well as “suspension enhancements”.

The latest generation Impreza, meanwhile, is now propelled by a new 115 kW 2,0-litre Boxer engine. It’s built on the new Subaru Global Platform and also features Active Torque Vectoring.

And the new Subaru XV? Well, it will be launched locally with an “X-Mode” system (including hill descent control) and an all-new interior design to mirror that of the Impreza.

Lastly, Subaru SA also confirmed that updated versions of the WRX and WRX STI are on their way to South Africa.

Subaru Impreza - Imminent

The 5th-generation Impreza launches in South Africa soon, debuting the brand's all-new Subaru Global Platform which will underpin most of Subaru's products in the next decade. It promises greater efficiency, enhanced rigidity, improved safety and the arrival of a host of new technologies, including the marque's award-winning EyeSight system (from the 3rd quarter), a package of pre-collision active safety technologies. As before, the trademark symmetrical all-wheel drive remains, but there's a new 115 kW direct-injection 2.0-litre petrol engine under the bonnet and Active Torque Vectoring control to further sharpen up the dynamics. Inside, there's a far more premium-feeling cabin with a smart, 8-inch touchscreen Starlink infotainment system.

LOCAL PRICING FOR THE NEW SUBARU IMPREZA AT LAUNCH

Back in February, Subaru Southern Africa confirmed that the new Impreza would arrive in local dealers in the second quarter of 2017. And now we’ve stumbled across initial pricing – for the mid-spec model, at least.

While it seems the local Impreza range will eventually comprise three derivatives, only one variant will be available from launch: the 2,0i-S Lineartronic CVT.

This model is priced at R399 000. Subaru SA says the entry-level 2,0i Petrol Lineartronic CVT and range-topping 2,0i-S ES Lineartronic CVT, meanwhile, are available on pre-order from this month, with delivery set down from October, although pricing has yet to be confirmed.

All three variants employ the Japanese automaker’s 2,0-litre, four-cylinder, horizontally opposed petrol engine mated to a continuously variable transmission, sending 115 kW at 6 000 r/min and 196 N.m at 4 200 r/min to all four wheels.

A three-year/75 000 km warranty and three-year/75 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km) comes standard.

Expect the latest versions of the WRX and WRX STI to arrive later in the year.

South African Options

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is available with a choice of eight exterior colours to suit individual tastes: Crystal White Pearl; Ice Silver Metallic; Dark Gray Metallic; Crystal Black Silica; Quartz Blue Pearl; Dark Blue Pearl; Pure Red and Venetian Red Pearl. The interior colour options are Black or Ivory.

In October 2017, the Subaru Impreza range will be expanded. The 2.0i Lineartronic CVT standard grade model and the EyeSight-equipped 2.0i-S ES Lineartronic CVT will arrive and while they're already available for pre-order, we don't have a price confirmation as yet.

Subaru's all-new Impreza now in SA, at a price

After skipping a generation, (if you’ll ignore the WRX version that was based on the fourth-gen sedan but didn’t wear an Impreza badge) Subaru has launched its all-new Impreza sedan in South Africa and the importer refers to its new four-door as “a game changer”.

It’s built on the company’s new global platform, which makes extensive use of high-tensile steel, and Subaru says it’s in a “whole new class” when it comes to refinement, safety, interior technology and driving dynamics, also being up to 70 percent more torsionally rigid. Was the previous version not rigid then?

Anyhow, power is provided by a new direct injection, normally aspirated 2-litre petrol engine that produces 115kW at 6000rpm and 196Nm at 4200rpm. As you'd expect, it powers all four wheels through Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

All local models will be fitted with Subaru’s upgraded Lineartronic CVT gearbox that features steering-mounted shifter panels that allow the driver to flick between seven predetermined steps, or virtual gears as one might call them.

There is only one derivative for now and it’s called the 2.0i-S Premium CVT. Though rather well appointed it is technically a mid-range model as Subaru will expand the range with a lower-spec Impreza and a flagship 2.0i ES Premium this coming October.

The 2.0i-S comes with leather seats (heated up front and available in black or ivory) as well as dual-zone climate control, LED headlights, auto wipers, cruise control, high-beam assist, Blind spot monitoring with Lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert among other gizmos.

Also fitted is a 20cm touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera and satnav, and the system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The ES flagship model will add a whole suite of additional ‘EyeSight’ driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane sway warning and lead vehicle start alert.

Should all of that not prove sufficient, the Impreza is fitted with seven airbags (across the range) and its structure and safety features have earned it five star ratings in both the EuroNCAP and Aussie NCAP tests.

However, this much-improved model comes at a price. Although Subaru has yet to announce prices for the base and flagship ES models, the midrange 2.0i-S Premium that’s for sale from now comes at R399 000. But besides the satisfaction of owning what certainly looks to be a high-quality product, that price tag will also ensure that buyers enjoy an air of exclusivity on the roads.

Aftersales backup comes in the form of a five-year/150 000km warranty and three-year/75 000km maintenance plan.

New Subaru Impreza revealed ahead of Frankfurt motor show

Subaru’s latest Ford Focus rival sits on the brand's new global platform and retains all-wheel drive

Subaru has shown its new European-spec Impreza ahead of the car’s public debut at the Frankfurt motor show this September.

The latest iteration of the brand's Ford Focus rival retains its predecessor’s unique set-up of a flat-four boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive, but underneath it sits on the all-new Subaru Global Platform.

This brings the Impreza's body 5mm closer to the ground than before, with Subaru claiming that this improves handling and agility. Subaru also says the new car will have improved steering responses.

Subaru is yet to announce the exact specifications of the new Impreza's engine, but it's predicted to be a developed version of the old car's 1.6-litre motor at launch. The new model will also likely gain more engine options in a bid to broaden its appeal.

The Impreza's exterior design is now sharper and more in line with the brand’s performance models, the BRZ and WRX STI. Although it's yet to be revealed, the European-spec car's interior will almost certainly be the same as that of the US model, which was launched last year. This features a new central infotainment touchscreen.

Subaru will also fit its new model with its Eyesight technology as standard. This driver assistance system includes emergency automatic braking and adaptive cruise control.

More information, including pricing and on sale dates, will be released when the car arrives this autumn. As with its predecessor, it's expected to cost from less than £20,000.
