Tata Tigor gets two new AMT variants

2019-Tata-Tigor-AMT-XZA-.jpg

Tata Motors has added two new AMT (automated manual transmission) variants to the Tigor range. The new variants, namely – XMA and XZA+ - are priced at Rs 6.39 lakh and Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), respectively.

The XMA introduces the AMT option to the mid-level variant of the car, whereas the XZA+ is the top-spec model. Prior to the inclusion of these two, AMT was only offered with the XZA variant of the Tigor.

The XMA and XZA+ variants are mechanically identical to the XZA, meaning they’re only offered with a petrol power-train. The engine is a 1.2-litre Revotron unit that churns out 84bhp and 114Nm of torque and comes paired to a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

Coming to the features and equipment, the introduction of XZA+ means that customers will now be able to buy the automatic version of the Tigor in its fully-loaded spec.

The XZA+ is based on the XZ+ manual variant, which means it gets top-end features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and an 8 speaker sound system by Harman, 15-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, electrically foldable ORVM's with integrated LED's, et al.

The XMA variant, on the other hand, has made AMT option more affordable for Tigor customers since it’s based on the mid-level XM variant.

Having said that, it’s decently kitted out with features as well. It gets driving modes, a Harman tuned music system with Bluetooth connectivity, reverse parking sensors, foldable rear armrest, et al.

In terms of safety, both the new variants are equipped with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, speed-dependent automatic door locking and engine immobilizer.

Tata's Tigor is a Cheap EV

Indian automotive giant Tata has done the inevitable and electrified one of its budget vehicle offerings.

The Tigor sedan is amongst Tata’s most popular vehicles and a new version was introduced late last year. Now Tata has revealed a battery powered Tigor, which might become one of the first truly affordable electric vehicles to be marketed.

Electrification does not change the Tigor’s appearance much, although it does sacrifice some luggage space. The battery-powered Tigor has a boot capacity only 330-litres, which is 90-litres less than the petrol-powered version.

Tata claims a range of 142 km for the Tigor EV and recharging efficiency depends on what you are plugging it into. A conventional wall socket will take six hours to charge the Tigor to full capacity, whilst a DC 15 kW fast charging unit reduces that to an hour and a half.

Pricing? The Tigor EV is positioned at an estimated R200 000, with India acting as its launch market. Tata has a small offering of just 3 cars in South Africa so it would be a bit optimistic to expect it to immediately jump on an electric vehicle option for SA.

The range is a bit crap. Would only be able to use it as a city car really. But for that price I suppose you cant expect much more.

Tata Tigor Electric Review - Team-BHP

1631111022291.png

Tata Tigor EV Pros

• A competent EV package at an affordable starting price
• Zero tailpipe emissions & green image will appeal to the environmentally-conscious
• Real-world range of ~200 km is adequate for city commutes & urban dwellers
• Stupendously cheap fuel cost of 1 rupee / km (if you charge at home)
• Peppy behaviour in "S" mode! "D" mode is rather tame though
Sorted road manners due to the lower center-of-gravity & firmer suspension
• Smooth drive, no gears, light controls & compact size make it an ideal city car

• Well-designed interiors are likeable & user-friendly
• Features like the 8-speaker Harman audio system, projector headlamps, connected car tech & more
• Solid build & construction. 4-star GNCAP safety rating is commendable

Tata Tigor EV Cons

• A stiff 5-lakh rupees more expensive than the Tigor Petrol AMT
• Nexon EV is superior & not that far away in terms of pricing (or EMIs)
• ~200 km range means this is strictly a city car. No long highway runs

• Stiffer suspension than the regular Tigor means you feel more of the road. Bad roads are felt
• Power tapers off after 100 km/h; top speed of just 120 km/h
• Smaller 316L boot (regular Tigor = 419L) due to the intrusive spare tyre
• Some misses such as "P" mode on the shifter, adjustable regen braking & alloy wheels
• A rare Tata car that cannot seat 5 (best for 4 adults)
• Tata's after-sales service quality is a hit or miss. Remains a gamble
• It's a brand-new technology, so there will be issues & niggles

Tata Tigor Electric: Our observations after 2 days of driving

Think of "D" being more like "ECO" mode. Performance in D mode is decent, but that's it. You won’t have any issues keeping up with city traffic & power is sufficient for day-to-day commuting.

Tata launches E20-compliant Tiago, Punch, Altroz & Nexon - Team-BHP
