Corolla gets more attitude with black trim edition

Black colour schemes are all the rage these days and even Toyota’s normally conservative Corolla is joining in the fun with this new special edition called the ‘Prestige+’.

You might notice that the edition is not as shiny up front, with the chrome trim that you usually find on the Corolla’s grille making way for a glossy black treatment, which has also been applied to the lower air dam, side mirrors and roof. Two-tone 17-inch alloys wheels add further contrast and buyers can choose from three exterior colours: Glacier White, Satin Silver and Graphite Grey.

The sportier theme continues inside, where the silver door trim makes way for Piano Black accents, while a leather and cloth upholstery combination replaces the full leather treatment found in standard Prestige models and Toyota has thrown in a set of ‘Prestige+’ branded floor mats.

Only one engine is available, that being Toyota’s 1.6-litre normally aspirated unit, rated at 90kW and 154Nm, but customers can choose between a six-speed manual and CVT transmission.

Apart from the aforementioned stylistic changes, the ‘+’ has the same feature count as regular Prestige derivatives, with standard fare including a touchscreen audio system with reverse camera, manual air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows, front and side airbags, ABS and stability control. All Corollas are sold with a three-year/100 000km warranty and five-year/90 000km service plan.

The Prestige+ sells for R318 500 in manual form and R333 000 when paired with the CVT gearbox - this is a R7900 premium over the regular Prestige models.

WATCH: Toyota SA creates biggest 'beaded love letter' yet for local Corolla fans

• 1.1-million Corolla units produced and sold in South Africa
• 50 years on, Corolla remains true to the model’s original DNA
• In SA for more than 40 years
• Close to 50-million sold globally

Toyota South Africa has created a ‘beaded billboard’, with the help of Woza Moya, to thank Corolla owners for the role they play in making the iconic car a success.

Toyota SA said: "In the Zulu culture, love letters are traditionally crafted out of beadwork by Zulu women, each is a work of art and totally unique. This truly South African declaration of love seemed like a fitting way to celebrate South Africa’s most loved car."

On show in SA

Arguably one of the world’s largest beaded creations, the Corolla billboard was unveiled on earlier in September. Located on the M1 De Villiers Graaff Highway – after the Crown Interchange and before the Booysens Interchange – the beaded billboard will be on display until October 16.

Toyota SA said: "Coinciding with the national heritage month, the Corolla is in its own right a heritage model in the Toyota fleet. That the Corolla billboard is made from beads is also fitting in celebrating its heritage, as beads are themselves con-sidered a continental heritage.

"As a cultural heritage, beads have served as jewellery, pieces of art, haute cou-ture as well royal regalia in Africa as far back as 12 000 ago."

Beaded billboard

The beaded billboard measures 12m X 9m, weighs over 1 tonne, and comprises over 138 000 individual beads sewn together by 350 women crafters from Woza Moya. Woza Moya is the economic empowerment project of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust in KwaZulu-Natal, the province where Toyota SA has manufactured the Corolla since 1972. In addition to the billboard the crafters have also beaded 7500 individual Corolla beaded love letters for new Corolla buyers and Toyota Staff.

'Thank you to the community'

Glenn Crompton, Vice-President of Marketing at Toyota SA, confirmed: "It was vitally important for us that this campaign, an act of thanks to Corolla drivers and their Corollas, also said ‘thank you’ to the community in which our Corollas are put together.

"Since 1975, the Corolla plant has been in KwaZulu-Natal, so the fit between Wo-za Moya and the campaign was ideal. We’re thrilled to have been able to create work for the crafters who belong to the initiative."

Toyota best-seller

Now well into its eleventh generation, and more than 50 years since being intro-duced onto the market, there is no doubt that Toyota has had enough time to per-fect the Corolla recipe. Not only does it remain the world’s best-selling nameplate in automotive history, it’s still one of the most popular vehicles in the Toyota line-up.

According to Janine Kleinschmidt – Creative Director responsible for the design – the decision to celebrate Corolla and its drivers with a beaded billboard was sparked by the thinking behind the Special Edition Corolla, which rolled out earlier this year.

Kleinschmidt explained: "Toyota SA wanted to celebrate the fact that Corolla has been the most loved car in South Africa since ‘forever’ while entrenching its posi-tioning ‘Love Driving’. The intricate workmanship in the Special Edition Corolla launched earlier this year was evocative of the uniquely South African visual lan-guage of Zulu love letters, so we used this to the art direction and design of the campaign.

"We absolutely love what we’ve achieved, and we’re thrilled that Toyota SA in-sisted the campaign include a large corporate social responsibility element. It has been an honour to work with the crafters from Woza Moyà".

Suzuki to build sedan based on outgoing Toyota Corolla?

A fresh report out of India suggests Suzuki will start selling a sedan based on the outgoing Toyota Corolla in 2019.

According to GaadiWaadi, Maruti Suzuki (the Japanese brand’s highly successful Indian subsidiary) will launch the re-engineered sedan as its new flagship offering in that country, slotting it in above the Ciaz.

In May 2018, the pair of Japanese automakers announced plans to collaborate in the fields of technological development, market development and vehicle production. By August, reports had surfaced stating Toyota would offer a rebadged version of the Baleno hatchback in India.

And now it seems Toyota will in return supply some 10 000 units of its Corolla to Suzuki, with testing of the re-engineered prototype having apparently already commenced in the state of Haryana.

Interestingly, as Indian Autos Blog points out, the Corolla in question is the outgoing eleventh-generation model – which we’ve already reported will soldier on in South Africa as the latest, locally built Quest – rather than the new twelfth-generation saloon.

The report furthermore suggests Suzuki will ditch the 1,4-litre turbodiesel engine and 1,8-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit used by the Corolla in favour of its own 1,5-litre powerplants (in both flavours).

It’s not yet clear whether Maruti Suzuki’s Corolla-based sedan is set to be offered in markets outside of India.
