BMW unleashes refreshed 4 Series in SA: We have prices and specs!

BMW South Africa has launched its 4 Series with refreshed versions of the Coupe, Gran Coupe and Convertible models. There's also a new M4 to top the line-up.

Wheels24's editor Sergio Davids is driving the updated range in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga today.

BMW claims nearly 400 000 units have been sold worldwide since the launch of the 4 Series Coupe in 2013. The line-up expanded to the Convertible and Gran Coupe the following year. Local numbers equate to just over 5 500 in South Africa up to the end of 2016.

The German automaker claims the updated models write the next chapter in this success story with even sharper styling and revised suspension.

A variety of models

BMW says all the petrol engines, and the four-cylinder diesel unit, fitted in the new 4 Series range stem from the latest BMW EfficientDynamics family of engines. All units are equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

There are three petrol engines: BMW 420i, 430i and 440i, and one diesel option 420d available for all models – except for the Convertible, which is only offered in the petrol engine derivatives.

Power figures ranges from 135kW in the 420i up to 240kW in the 440i (fuel consumption combined: 7.5 – 5.5 litres/100km; CO2 emissions combined: 154 – 127g/km).

The diesel model delivers 140kW with a claimed fuel consumption of 4.0 – 4.2 litres/100km and combined CO2 emissions of 111 – 106g/km.

What's new?

Restyled LED headlights take the place of the outgoing cars’ xenon units; all models equipped with LED front foglights as standard. The debut LED rear lights provide extra drama to the car’s powerful looks. There are also modified air intakes, line-specific applications and the new rear apron add further striking touches.

Inside

BMW says there are electroplated detailing, chrome applications and the centre console is finished in high-gloss black. There's also double stitching on the instrument panel, three new upholstery colour options with three new interior trim strips. Two new body colours have also been added to the range: Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange.

The wheels get one new model-specific design each for the Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport equipment lines.

Revised suspension

The automaker says: "The new BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe now come with a stiffer suspension set-up delivering even sportier handling without any loss of ride comfort.

"Both the lateral and longitudinal dynamics have been improved, regardless of the load on board. This applies not only to the standard suspension, but also to the M Sport suspension and the Adaptive suspension."

Sharper styling for BMW M4, too

The M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible is now available with adaptive full-LED headlights. A number of styling touches have been added to give the cabin an even more sophisticated air. And the two M4 models likewise feature the updated version of the Navigation system Professional and other ConnectedDrive features.

Prices start from R715 400 for the 420i Convertible to R985 100 for the 440i Convertible.

BMW 4 Series gets a nip and tuck for 2017

The BMW 4 Series, sexy cousin of the 3 Series sedan, has undergone a nip and tuck along with a suspension upgrade to bring it up to date for 2017.

The mid-life freshening applies to the complete 4 Series range, namely the two-door Coupe, four-door Gran Coupe and two-door Convertible, which collectively have sold over 5 500 units in South Africa since 2013.

The styling's been sharpened with a subtle facelift including restyled LED headlights that take the place of the previous xenon units, along with new LED rear lights, while all models get LED front foglamps as standard. Modified air intakes, line-specific applications and a new rear apron add further styling touches.

Cabins are freshened-up across the range with new electroplated detailing, chrome applications and centre console in high-gloss black for a more exclusive, high-quality feel. The instrument panel gets double stitching, while three new upholstery colours and a trio of new interior trim strips increase the number of interior personalisation options.

Also introduced are two new exterior paint finishes: Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange, and there is also one new model-specific wheel design each for the Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport equipment grades.

The optional Navigation system Professional for the new BMW 4 Series now features an interface with large, easier-to-use tile-style control pads. The range can be optionally fitted with the Multifunctional Instrument Display, giving the driver the choice of different visualisation options for all displays depending on the driving experience mode selected.

The 4 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe now come with a stiffer suspension set-up for sportier handling but reportedly without any loss of ride comfort. This applies to the standard, M Sport and Adaptive suspension choices.

The tweak also improves straight-line stability and imparts more communicative steering. High-performance tyres are available as a factory-fitted option for all models from the BMW 430i upwards.

The engine line up is unchanged, and the 4 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe are as before available in three turbopetrol versions (420i, 430i, 440i) with outputs respectively pegged at 135kW, 185kW and 240kW, and one turbodiesel (420d) rated for 140kW. The 4 Series Convertible is only offered in the petrol engine derivatives, and as previously a 317kW M4 is available as the range-topper in the Coupe and Convertible (but not the Gran Coupe).

Transmission choices also stay the same with a six-speed manual or eight-speed Streptronic auto (440i is offered in auto only), and six-speed manual or seven-speed M Double Clutch for the M4 derivatives.

Looks very fancy to me... I prefer BMW's interior compared to Merc or Audi..

I don't see the fuss in Mercedes's interior. .actually looks too serious and not sporty to me..
That wood in the center console just kills it for me.. not to mention the slapped on screen..

Pricing and warranty

BMW offers the same warranty and maintenance plan across all its models. There’s a 2yr/unlimited km warranty and a 5yr/100 000 km maintenance plan. The 420i Gran Coupe range starts from R604 796 and this 420i Gran Coupe M Sport sports auto costs R670 698 before options.

Verdict

Simply put: the 4 Series is a 3 Series for the discerning buyer. BMW makes excellent cars, but given that the 3 Series represents better value for money, it's the better-selling product. The 4 adds a touch of spice into the design and its added sporty handling characteristics are a welcome separation between the 2 models. However, in something that looks as good as a 4 Series it seems the standard 20i (2.0-litre) turbocharged engine doesn’t deliver on the design and chassis’ promise. The 4 Series Gran Coupe commands an R80 000 premium over the 3 Series so it makes sense to choose it with a higher powered version, where the added cost is a smaller percentage of the price and you won’t feel short-changed by the power.

Driven: BMW 420d Coupe M Sport

BMW updated its 4 Series model range in July and recently we sampled the 420d Coupe fitted with an M Sport pack.

Our test unit garnered lots of attention for one reason: Its 'Snapper Rocks Blue' hue, is eye-catching to say the least. Enough about the colour, what's new on this refreshed 4 Series?

140kW and a hefty 400Nm

On the outside, you'll notice LED headlights instead of the usual xenon units; for added illumination all models are equipped with LED front foglights as standard.

The designers have made subtle tweaks to the air intakes and there's also a new rear apron. 'Our' M Sport unit featured 19-inch wheels and a few M badges on the

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine produces 140kW and a hefty 400Nm. Our test unit had optional paddle shifts, but the smooth 8-speed automatic gearbox was best left to its own devices, changing at the right time.

The M Sport package, which adds R40 100 to the list price of R660 100, includes sports seats, M suspension and a thick-rimmed M sport steering wheel. For a full list click here.

The engine however isn't going to blow your hairback like a North Korean missile launch, you're better off with a 440i for that.

But what it does offer is sharp dynamics, connected steering and a well-made cabin.

The iDrive system is intuitive and easy to use, offering connectivity to the driver. The optional Harmon Kardon sound system is fantastic, offering crisp and clear sound from its multiple speakers.

Driver's can choose between four different modes, we found the 'comfort' setting best for everyday driving and 'sport' for when you're keen on tackling a mountain pass early one Saturday morning.

The sport seats offer supple cushioning even for bigger-built adults.

A big boon in this particular model is the fuel consumption. The car arrived with a range of around 750km and during the week test averaged 6.8-litres/100km, which is very impressive. BMW claims an impossible 4.0-litre/100km.

Rouel van Nelson shares his experience on driving the 420d -

The M sportpack compliments the good looks of the 420d Coupe but it's the fuel economy numbers that ties in with what the automaker wanted to achieve with the vehicle.

In a nutshell, BMW seeked to design a goodlooking vehicle with the emphasis on it being an economic coupe.

As for as the drive is concerned, the 420d Coupe is precise when going about corners and thoroughly comfortable. The gear changing from the 8-speed gearbox is hardly ever felt when in transition, even when giving it the full beans.

Ideally speaking, you get more than whats expected from the 420d and its diesel engine when you summarise the engine as a whole.

For one, its a beautifully designed car. Secondly, it has enough power for when needs be as it is by no means a fire breathing dragon. Lastly, it hits home as a practical and joyful car to drive.
