Update to the i3 as well as a new performance version called the i3s.

The BMW i3 shows the way ahead to a new era of mobility. It is recognised the world over as a symbol of driving pleasure, sustainability and intelligent connectivity in the urban traffic environment, which is why it has become the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment. The recipe for success of the BMW i3 has now been further improved, thanks not just to refreshing styling accents, cutting-edge equipment features and new digital services, but also to the addition of a new model variant. For making its debut alongside the new edition of the first ever premium car to be conceived from the outset for all-electric mobility is the BMW i3s. With a higher output, model-specific chassis technology, noticeably more dynamic driving qualities and design features all of its own, it generates a particularly intense blend of the unrivalled sporty driving pleasure associated with electric cars from the BMW Group. By offering a premium-quality, all-electric driving experience, meaning zero local emissions, together with a whole new level of connectivity technology, both models represent the future of urban mobility.

The BMW i3 has reigned as the top-selling premium electric car in its class since 2014, not just in Europe but worldwide too. And in Germany, it has actually been topping the new vehicle registration statistics for the electric car segment as a whole, also since 2014. It's not just the visionary electric vehicles and inspirational design that help to make BMW i so popular, but also its innovative mobility solutions and the revolutionary new form of premium character, with sustainability as a key defining element. By offering such products while also adopting an all-embracing approach that takes into account the complete lifecycle - from raw material production, through the manufacture and operation of the vehicles to their later recycling - the BMW i brand has established itself as a pioneer for forward-thinking mobility.

BMW eDrive electric motor in two output levels, high-voltage battery with large capacity of 94 Ah/33 kWh, optional range extender engine

The driving experience in the BMW i models has played no small part in the growing appeal and popularity of electric mobility. Following systematic refinement, the BMW eDrive technology aboard the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s enables drivers to enjoy locally emission-free mobility with wonderfully instantaneous power delivery, efficient use of energy and an optimised range for a level of everyday practicality that even extends beyond the demands of purely urban travel. Both models draw their energy from the lithium-ion high-voltage battery developed by the BMW Group with a capacity of 94 ampere hours (Ah) or 33 kilowatt hours (kWh). A range extender engine can be ordered as an option for both the new BMW i3 and the new BMW i3s.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s will celebrate their world premieres at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in September 2017. The global market launch will begin in November 2017.

The new BMW i3s: a thoroughly dynamic performer

The new BMW i3s incorporates a number of design elements all of its own that underscore its particularly dynamic character. Both the front and rear aprons are notable for their model-specific, powerfully shaped contours. At the front, the bumper inlay as well as the U-shaped surround encircling it have a black finish. The front apron's side sections are bordered on their lower edge by accent strips in BMW i Blue or Frozen Grey that further emphasise the width of the car. The accent in the closed BMW kidney grille is also painted in high-gloss black on the BMW i3s to give the grille a larger and more prominent appearance. The rear apron of the new BMW i3s is likewise composed of individually styled contours, while the black surround frames an extra-wide, body-coloured inlay. On the new BMW i3s, the roof line accent also sports the same high-gloss black finish as the A-pillars.

The new BMW i3s comes equipped as standard with sports suspension that includes a 10-millimetre drop in ride height. The additional 40 millimetres of track width compared to the BMW i3 is given added impact by the black wheel arch borders. The new BMW i3s is available with exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design that are 20 millimetres wider than the previously available versions. They can be ordered in the Bicolour and Jet Black colour variants.

BMW i3 facelift launched with 181bhp i3s range-topper

New i3s can hit 62mph in 6.9sec; updated regular version has 168bhp; prices start at £34,070

BMW has unveiled the i3s – an updated version of its three- year-old electric-powered hatchback featuring a more sporting appearance, added reserves and an upgraded wheel and tyre package.

It heads a new four-model strong facelifted i3 line-up set to make its public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show. Sales have kicked off now, with prices for the range starting at £34,070. The i3s starts at £36,975.

Central among the changes brought to the new i3s is a more powerful synchronous electric motor. With 181bhp and 199lb ft of torque, the rear mounted unit is tuned to deliver a subtle 13bhp and 15lb ft more than the in-housed produced motor used by the standard version of the facelifted i3, which continues to produce 168bhp and 184lb ft.

Both new i3 models deliver drive to the rear-wheels via the same a fixed ratio gearbox. But while the standard i3 runs restyled 19-inch wheels shod with the same 155/70 profile low rolling resistance as the original model launched in 2014, the new i3s comes with larger 20-inch alloys and wider 195/50 profile rubber.

With the larger wheels and greater levels of standard equipment, the i3s tips the scales 20kg above its standard sibling at 1265kg. However, its added power and torque sees it post a faster 0-62mph time at 6.9sec versus the claimed 7.2sec for the standard i3. The new range topping i3 model also reaches a higher limited top speed of 100mph against the 93mph of its less powerful sibling.

In a bid to improve its agility, BMW has provided the i3s with a 40mm wider rear track. It is combined with a sport suspension featuring a 10mm lower ride height than the standard i3, together with uniquely tuned springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Further changes are concentrated at the dynamic stability control system, which receives new software that is claimed to provide it with faster and improved response to a loss in traction.

Another new feature is the sport driving mode that allows the driver to call up more direct properties for the steering and throttle.

The new i3 and i3s use the same 94Ah lithium ion battery that was introduced as a running change to the zero-emission BMW in early 2016. With a capacity of 33.2kWh, it is claimed to provide both models with a maximum range of between 146 and 158 miles on the new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle) test procedure cycle, with the more familiar but less representative NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test figure unchanged at 186 miles.

As with the facelifted version of the standard i3, the new i3s also comes with an optional range extender in the form of a rear-mounted 647cc two-cylinder petrol engine. Bringing an additional 120kg in kerb weight, it acts purely as a generator, providing electrical charge to the floor mounted battery when required.

The stylistic changes brought to the facelifted i3 are relatively subtle. Included among the mid-life makeover is a new front bumper. It features greater structure and dispenses with the round outboard high beam lights for new thin line LED units that act as blinkers. The headlamps have also been upgraded with LED functions for both the dipped and high beam. The new model also features a black roof, revised sills, lightly altered tail lamps graphics and a revised rear bumper.

On top of this, the i3s gains subtle wheel arch flares as well as blue highlights within the bumpers and along the sills.

Inside, the 2018-model-year i3 receives revised trims and upholstery together with a new 10.3 inch infotainment display featuring a new tile based operating system.

BMW updates i3 ... and adds sportier (driftable!) i3s

BMW has given its i3 electric car a bit of a makeover, while adding a “sporty” new i3s derivative to the range at the same time.

The new BMW i3s variant – which is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2018 – boasts a higher output than the standard model as well as what the Munich-based automaker calls “noticeably more dynamic driving qualities”, along with model-specific chassis technology. And, apparently, it’ll even drift.

Both the standard model and the new i3s draw their energy from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery with a capacity of 94 Ah or 33 kWh. As before, a 28 kW two-cylinder range-extender engine can be ordered as an option, boosting the car’s overall claimed range in everyday use by 150 km.

The standard i3 is again powered by a synchronous electric motor generating 125 kW and 250 N.m, which BMW claims results in a 0-100 km/h time of 7,3 seconds (with top speed limited to 150 km/h). Range tops out at a claimed 200 km in what BMW describes as “everyday use”.

The sportier i3s, meanwhile, features a “high-performance” 135 kW electric motor that generates peak torque of 270 N.m. The obligatory sprint is seen off in a claimed 6,9 seconds, with top speed limited to 160 km/h. BMW claims the same 200 km range for everyday use.

And, apparently, the new model will even drift. BMW says it has “comprehensively revised” the new model’s dynamic stability control system, with the dynamic traction control mode boosting “agility at higher speeds and during sporty cornering, even allowing mild and safely controllable drifts when grip levels are reduced”. Colour us intrigued.

Interestingly, the new BMW i3s also boasts sports suspension (which results in a 10 mm drop in ride height) with specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. In addition, drivers can select sport mode, which the automaker says initiates “more direct accelerator response and tighter steering characteristics”.

This new model also gains an additional 40 mm of track width compared to the standard i3, along with black wheel-arch borders. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are likewise 20 mm wider than previously available versions. The BMW i3s furthermore boasts model-specific front and rear aprons, complete with accent strips and yet more gloss-black trim.

Styling tweaks for both models include a new black finish for the A-pillars and roof lines, while the range of paint finishes for the rest of the body panels has been extended to include two new hues: Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic.

Both variants feature full-LED headlamps as standard, while the new indicators up front also employ LED technology and are integrated into the apron in the form of horizontal strips.

Facelifted BMW i3 Revealed

BMW has revealed details of the facelifted i3, which includes a new i3S, which is due to be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. Take a look at the details…

If there is one thing BMW has achieved with the i3, it’s made electric mobility attractive, not only in terms of its styling but also in terms of its driving experience. It’s not surprising then that the i3 is the world’s best-selling electric car in premium compact segment. The charming BMW i3 electric car has been updated and a new i3S joins the lineup.

What’s changed?

Electric power

A more powerful i3S will be offered with 135 kW and 270 Nm of torque, capable of 0-100 kph in 6.9 seconds.

Both the i3 and i3S are powered by a synchronous electric motor and a high voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 94 Ah or 33 kWh allowing for emission-free driving. A range extender engine will be offered as an option for both the i3 and i3S.

The electric motor boasts instantaneous outputs of 125 kW and 250 Nm of torque in the i3 allowing for a zero to 100 kph sprint time of 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 150 kph.

The i3S features a high-performance electric motor with outputs of 135 kW and 270 Nm of torque. Acceleration from zero to 100 kph in the i3S takes 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 160 kph. BMW has also optimised the Dynamic Stability Control for improved handling and the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) is said to boost agility at higher speeds and during cornering, allowing for the i3 to achieve "mild and safely controllable drifts when grip levels are reduced".

The lithium ion battery stored in the vehicle floor provides an electric range of 290 to 300 km (NEDC) for the standard i3 while the i3S offers 280 km.

The optional range extender comprises a 28 kW, 2-cylinder petrol engine which drives a generator to maintain a constant charge for the battery. With the Range Extender, daily range increases by 150 km to a maximum of 330 km. All-electric range is pegged at 225 to 235 km. For the i3 Range Extender, BMW claims a fuel consumption figure of 0.6 L/100 km.

A new charging cable allows for a charge rate that's 5 times faster than before with 180 km range charged in under 3 hours.

Charging the i3 is achieved using a BMW i Wallbox that will charge a range of 180 km in under 3 hours using a revised cable featuring a temperature sensor. The charge rate is some 5 times quicker than the standard cable. The i Wallbox Connect also extends the functionality of the unique Digital Charging Service to provide intelligent charging for optimal cost efficiency and allows customers to make best use of self-generated solar energy. The charging process can also be controlled using a smartphone app and usage can be managed using a ChargeNow access card.

Styling

In terms of styling, the facelifted i3 features enhancements that convey the sporty side of the vehicle. The i3 and i3S feature redesigned bumpers that emphasise the car’s width, giving the i3 a more sporting character. The fog lights have been restyled and LED headlights with daytime running lights are standard. New LED indicators are seen as horizontal strips integrated into the front apron. A new silver-coloured roof line accent gives the i3 an elegant touch. Two new paint options will be offered including Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic.

In the case of the new i3S, the front and rear aprons feature a model-specific contoured design. The front-end features black finishes while the roof line accent is in the same high-gloss black finish seen on the A-pillars.

The i3S is fitted with a sports suspension as standard and rides 10 mm lower, with an increased track width of 40 mm over the standard i3. The i3S rides on 20-inch wheels with a double-spoke design and they are also 20 mm wider than previously offered.

The i3's interior uses up to 80% recycled and renewable material in its construction.

As for the interior, it largely carries over from the previous iteration and will be offered with 3 equipment lines including Loft, Lodge and Suite. A new Solaric Brown upholstery is offered in Lodge trim and features leather tanned in olive leaf extract with a wool-based textile material. As much as 80% of the i3’s interior is made from recycled materials or renewable materials including plastics, natural fibres, renewable raw materials and open-pore unbleached eucalyptus wood. New blue seat belts add a dash of colour to the interior. The i3 will feature an updated iDrive operating system to control vehicle, infotainment, navigation and communication functions.

BMW i3 gets a recharge and sportier ‘s’ version

BMW has updated its i3 electric hatchback for 2018 with refreshed styling, new features and a new model derivative with more power and sportier running gear.

The new i3s, due for debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September alongside the facelifted i3, has a more powerful electric motor (135kW and 270Nm, versus 125kW and 250Nm for the ‘standard’ model) thanks to an upgraded motor control unit and special taper roller bearings.

The maker quotes faster acceleration - 6.9 seconds to 100km/h compared to 7.3 - and top speed is limited to 160km/h rather than the 150km/h of the i3. All of which sounds great, but they still share the same 33kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack, built into the floor of the car, and the greater performance of the i3s is likely to reduce its range quite significantly.

Just as well then, that the new i3s will also be available (from launch in November 2017 in Europe, about a year later in South Africa) with the optional 28kW, two-cylinder range extender motor. As before, this has no connection to the car’s drivetrain, but drives a generator that pumps amperage into the battery on longer trips.

Standard issue for the i3s, however, included sports suspension with specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, as well as a drive mode switch with a Sport setting that sharpens both accelerator and steering response. Ride height has been lowered by 10mm and the track is 40mm wider, fore and aft, thanks to exclusive 20mm wider wheels, under model-specific add-on black wheel-arch trims.

Both versions of the new i3 feature an updated dynamic stability programme with faster response and improved traction on wet or slippery surfaces, using regenerative braking on individual wheels to keep the car going in the direction it’s pointing - although it will allow mild drifting under the right circumstances.

She’s got the look

The revised i3 sports all-LED headlight clusters and front indicators, restyled front and rear aprons (the front now all in body colour with a U-shape black edge trim, the rear with a new full-width chromed trim strip) to accentuate the car’s width, blacked-out A pillars and roof lines and a tapered silver-coloured roof line.

The i3s comes with accent strips on the front apron in blue or grey, high-gloss black grille inserts, a special rear apron with a bigger body-colour insert and a gloss black roof line.

Cabin trim, with its emphasis on recycled plastics, open-pored eucalyptus wood trim and natural fibres, gets an update with new, optional blue seatbelts; the i3s models also come with model-specific monogrammed floormats.

The optional parking assistance package includes park distance control, a reversing camera and a self-parking function, while the driving assistant plus package incorporates collision and pedestrian warning with autonomous braking function, active cruise control and a traffic jam function that not only maintains a safe distance to the car in front at up to 60km/h but also keeps the i3 in its lane.

The optional professional navigation system includes a new 26cm display with an increased resolution of 1440 x 540 pixels, improved voice recognition and Apple CarPlay preparation.

Finally, the new i3 comes with a improved standard charging cable that now includes a temperature sensor, while the BMW i Wallbox has been uprated to deliver 11kW - enough to charge the battery in three hours, five times quicker than using the standard charging cable.

BMW joins push for electric cars: Includes plans for Rolls Royce EVs

The BMW Group on Thursday said all of its brands would offer electrified cars by 2025, including the iconic Rolls Royce, as the dieselgate scandal and pollution concerns force an industry-wide shift towards cleaner engines.

The group, which also owns the Mini brand, said it would make 12 electric and 13 hybrid vehicles by 2025.

The announcement came on the same day that high-end rival Jaguar Land Rover said its entire stable of cars would be electrified by 2020.

BMW chief executive Harald Krueger said in a statement: "We will be increasing the share of electrified models across all brands and model series. And, yes, that also includes the Rolls-Royce brand."

Traditional automakers have stepped up their push to go electric since Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating emissions tests in millions of diesel cars. Suspicions later spread to other automakers as well, triggering a scandal that has rocked the industry.

Concerns about environmental pollution have since prompted dozens of German cities to mull diesel bans, while Britain and France declared they plan to end the sales of petrol and diesel engines by 2040.

BMW introduced its first fully electric car, BMW i3, in 2013, giving it a head-start in the competitive sector compared with German rivals Volkswagen and Daimler.

BMW plans to show off its first electric Mini, set for release in 2019, at the IAA car show in Frankfurt next week.

The BMW group plans to be "the leading provider in the premium segment" in e-mobility, Krueger added.

Jaguar Land Rover for its part said it would launch its first fully electric model, the SUV Jaguar I-Pace, next year.
