Not too badly priced, but you have better options for that money.

Competition Pack For The New BMW M5 Already Confirmed

The new BMW M5 comes standard with a whopping 600 horsepower but the manufacturer has already confirmed that the mighty new M model will receive a Competition Package sometime in 2018 (assuming very late on).

Andy Cook, BMW’s product executive for large cars, said “the Competition Package will bring tweaked dynamics, and likely standard ceramic brakes – which are a $10,000 option on the standard car.”

A Competition Package is expected to deliver additional horsepower through an engine remap which will also sharpen the acceleration and driving characteristics.

Cook went on to say that they expect a long series of special M5 models with the Competition Pack fitted “as standard.”

BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car

Innovative high-performance cars for safety at the highest level of motorcycle racing: the BMW M GmbH has remained true to this principle throughout nearly 20 years of partnership with the MotoGP organizer Dorna Sports, and as the "Official Car of MotoGP". That is especially true of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, which the company from Munich is presenting as the next highlight in the Safety Car fleet. The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5, which was showcased to the global public for the first time in August 2017. The new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will debut at the MotoGP season finale in Valencia, Spain (10th to 12th November 2017) and will speerhead the Safety Car fleet in the 2018 season.

"A MotoGP Safety Car faces enormous challenges. It is vital to lead a field of unique, high-performance race prototypes safely through all sorts of conditions," said Frank van Meel, President of BMW M GmbH. "Innovative motorsport technology is an essential part of this. The new BMW M5 forms the perfect basis for a safety car, as its technical features ensure perfect handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics - on the road and on the racetrack. Development never stands still in MotoGP, which is always pushing its limits further and further. The same is true for the BMW M GmbH - and the new M5 MotoGP Safety Car is an outstanding example of our pursuit of innovation and maximum levels of performance."

The features in question include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. With precise handling and perfect traction, this guarantees optimised driving dynamics in all manner of situations. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been completely overhauled by the M engineers. It represents another significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with 441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5. The new BMW M5 only needs 3.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. Transmission is provided by the new eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. The chassis contains M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics elements that contribute to optimised driving dynamics. The weight also plays an important role in performance. This has been reduced further through features such as the lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof.

BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car gains tasty new parts...

The new BMW M5, which will arrive in South Africa next year, has been revealed as the official MotoGP safety car for the 2018 season.

BMW says the newcomer will make its debut at the 2017 finale in Valencia next month, before taking over the safety car duties full-time next season.

The new safety car also features a handful of choice M Performance parts that will be available for the production M5, including side-sills, a rear diffusor, a rear spoiler, kidney grille, side-mirror caps and air-breather slats in carbon-fibre.

The twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 also gains an M Performance titanium exhaust system with carbon-fibre tips.

Seeing that the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will spend most (if not all) of its time on the track, it’s been kitted out with a front splitter, bonnet latches and a set of bucket seats sourced from the M4 GTS.

In order to fulfill its safety car duties, the M5 has also been fitted with an array of LEDs and a livery inspired by the BMW M8 GTE race car that is set to debut at Le Mans next year.

BMW reveals 2018 M5 MotoGP safety car

We all know the most dangerous time in any motorcycle Grand Prix is the opening lap, when all the bikes are bunched together, jostling for position. Which is why the safety car, carrying the course doctor and his emergency kit, always follows the pack round the circuit for the first lap.

Which presupposes that the safety car can keep up with the world’s fastest riders on the world’s fastest motorcycles - and that’s where BMW comes in, providing safety cars for the motorcycle Grand Prix series since 1999.

The new MotoGP safety car for 2018 is based on the new M5 performance sedan, which was first shown in public in August, and will debut at the final race meeting of 2017, at Valencia on the second weekend in November. With 441kW and 750Nm on tap from its 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol V8, eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic and M-specific xDrive all-wheel drive (for the first time on an M5) it’s certainly quick enough, but is it agile enough to stay with the two-wheelers?

As issued, probably not. So the M boffins at Garching went to work on the car’s aerodynamics, cooling and, most importantly, all-up weight, using mostly parts out of the extensive M5 aftermarket catalogue, including carbon-fibre side sills, rear diffuser, rear spoiler, kidney grille, door mirror housings, and air breather slats.

And because, with two dozen or more screaming Grand Prix bikes just ahead, nobody is ever going to notice if the MotoGP M5 is a little bit raucous, they fitted a track-only titanium exhaust system with carbon-fibre tips.

Then they got serious, adding a one-off front splitter developed specifically for this car, bonnet latches straight from competition department and bucket seats from the M4 GTS, to hold driver and doctor gently but firmly in place at cornering speeds way above what the standard M5 furniture was designed for.

The light bar on the roof is all-LED to keep it flat and instantly responsive, and is controlled from a specially-developed cockpit panel, as are the flashing blue lights behind the grille and the flashing corona rings around the headlights.

The distinctive livery in red, white and two shades of blue was inspired by the design of the works M8 endurance racer, which is being prepared to compete in the entry-level GTE class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2018. But by then, the M5 MotoGP Safety Car will already be a familiar sight to MotoGP fans - circulating, we hope, boringly at the back of the field with no work to do.

New BMW M5 lathered in tasty M Performance parts…

Do you think the new BMW M5’s styling is a little, well, understated? Well, the Munich-based automaker has the answer: a whole catalogue of tasty M Performance parts.

Unveiled at SEMA in Las Vegas, BMW says the new parts (some of which we’ve already seen on the new MotoGP safety car) are about more than mere styling. Indeed, it says many items in its fresh range of M Performance parts for the new M5 fulfil “functional requirements” in terms of aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction.

Most of the parts will be available as “retrofit components” when the vehicle is launched, while further products will follow at a later stage.

So, what sort of bits and bobs are we looking at? Well, there are various aerodynamic components (fashioned from carbon-fibre) on offer, including a newly designed front attachment, side-sill attachments, the choice of two rear spoilers and a rear diffuser. Then there’s the naked carbon-fibre air-breather trim (bearing the M logo) and M Performance carbon-fibre side-mirror caps. Side-sill foils will also be available.

In addition, BMW will offer its M Performance coilover suspension kit, which it says was “developed specifically” for the new M5, complete with red coil springs and adjustable spring plates.

Carbon-ceramic brakes will furthermore be available, while an M Performance sports exhaust system will be offered exclusively in the United States and Canada (complete with titanium muffler and carbon-fibre tailpipe trim).

Of course, motorsport stripes in trademark M colours are also in the catalogue, while a handcrafted carbon-fibre engine cover extension kit adds bling under the bonnet.

Inside, new M Performance parts include a special Alcantara/carbon-fibre steering wheel cover, new carbon-fibre shift paddles, a carbon-fibre gear-shift lever cover, special floor mats and a key wallet (made from – you guessed it – Alcantara and carbon-fibre).

The new BMW M5 will hit South Africa in the first quarter of 2018, with local pricing set to be revealed before the end of 2017.

BMW M5: Now with M Performance Parts

On the eve of the 2017 SEMA Show, images of the 2018 BMW M5 with M Performance Parts appeared online. If the standard looks don't do it for you, then this could be just the solution.

The SEMA event is the biggest aftermarket and tuning show in the world, but despite its aftermarket tag, many manufacturers get on board to show off wares and special limited edition cars. BMW has faced some criticism for the new M5, in terms of visual punch. It just doesn't have that wow factor. However, there is now an M Performance Parts catalogue for the new BMW M5 and the show car looks spectacular.

It's not just a cosmetic kit either and there are improvements to the handling, aerodynamic setup and exhaust tone. There's copious amounts of carbon fibre thrown in, as pictures will attest. There's a new front splitter, side skirts, boot spoiler, rear diffuser and wing mirrors - all in carbon fibre.

Under the skin, a new set of coilovers with adjustable spring plates and more potent carbon ceramic brakes are fitted. For the US and Canadian markets, there's the option of an M Performance sports exhaust setup, which features a titanium rear muffler and carbon fibre tailpipes. BMW claims this exhaust improves the engine note as well as a fractional increase in performance.

Finally, the cabin gains some improvements such as carbon fibre shift paddles, M Performance mats and a new key wallet. There's also an M Performance app which sends vehicle data direct to your smartphone.

BMW shows off M Performance Parts for new M5

BMW has brought the new M5 to the Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas accompanied by a whole catalogue of M Performance aftermarket parts, most of which will be available as retrofit components when the new M5 goes on sale during the first quarter of 2018, with more to follow in July 2018.

The new M5 has a revised twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, now delivering a quoted 441kW (up from 412kW) and 750Nm, and driving all four wheels (a first for an M5) via a an eight-speed M Steptronic autobox with three modes and steering-mounted shift paddles and an M-specific version of BMW's xDrive.

The aerodynamic components are all hand-made in carbon-fibre, including a new front apron, side sill attachments, and a choice of two different rear spoilers. A further range of trim elements includes front and air breather side trim grilles, and side mirror housings, all in visible carbon fibre, as well as M Performance side sill foils.

Also on offer will be carbon ceramic brakes, with race-proven brake pads and re-calibrated brake-force distribution for improved stability under the very hard braking they provide; as well as red coil springs with adjustable spring plates for a ‘pro motorsport’ look (although their spring rates are the same as the black-finished standard springs).

A new Performance sports exhaust system (for the United States and Canadian markets only - sorry, guys) with titanium end can and optional carbon-fibre tips, reduces back-pressure and provides a sporty sound-track.

Drive Analyser

The race-derived M Performance Drive Analyser records various engine data, speed and peak values, what gear you’re in, when you use the accelerator pedal and brakes, and lateral acceleration - which you can download onto your smartphone via a free app, for bragging rights in the garage.

And for more bragging rights, there’s the Trackfix action camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of either the front or rear mounting towing lug.

M’s got the look

You can up the street cred factor with go-fast stripes in signature M colours, and a handmade carbon-fibre engine cover extension kit.

There’s an M Performance steering wheel with distinctive geometry and grip areas trimmed in alcantara synthetic suede, as well as new carbon-fibre shift paddles and gear lever cover. And finally no go-fast catalogue is complete without the obligatory logo’d floor mats, as well as a mixed alcantara and carbon-fibre key wallet and an M Performance LED logo projector.

BMW Trolls Volvo’s Hometown As Billboard Wars Begin Anew

It looks like BMW is back in the billboard game because this billboard showing off the newest BMW M5 just showed up in Gothenburg, Sweden. Gothenburg is also known as Volvo’s headquarters.

This billboard is part of Need for Speed: Payback’s advertising campaign. The game is made in Sweden and allows players to drive the newest generation of BMW M5. This is a pretty good shot across the bow at Volvo. Here’s hoping they fire off a salvo of snarky ads towards BMW.

BMW is no stranger to advertising based sparring. A few years ago, BMW fought with Audi over a series of several billboards. I encourage billboard based arguing and I think it’s a clever move by whatever advertising agency is in charge.
