2018 Honda Amaze

I wonder if this EPS recall also applies to models of the Amaze sold in SA as well?

Honda India has announced a recall for the Amaze over a probable fault with the car's Electric-assist Power Steering (EPS) sensor harness.

A total of 7,290 units of the compact sedan manufactured between April 17, 2018 and May 24, 2018 have been affected.

Honda has said that in some of the cars, customers may see the EPS indicator light turn on and the steering may feel heavier than normal. A preventive inspection will be carried out and if required, the company will replace the EPS column unit.

The inspection and replacement will be carried out free of cost at Honda authorised dealerships across India starting from July 26, 2018. The company will be contacting owners of the affected vehicles individually.

Owners can also check if their cars are among the recalled lot by entering the 17-character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on Honda India's website - https://www.hondacarindia.com/forms/customerinfo.aspx

Here’s how much the new Honda Amaze costs in South Africa

The second-generation Honda Amaze was revealed back in February 2018 (ahead of the new Brio hatchback), and now we can bring you local pricing for this A-segment sedan.

Interestingly, the Amaze no longer features the Brio nameplate (following the lead of its chief rival, the Suzuki DZire, which dropped the Swift moniker in this latest generation).

As before, the Amaze range in South Africa comprises three derivatives, each powered by the Japanese automaker’s familiar (naturally aspirated) 1,2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The Amaze 1,2 Trend is priced at R179 900, while the Amaze 1,2 Comfort comes in at R193 900 (both models employ a five-speed manual gearbox). The self-shifting Amaze 1,2 Comfort CVT, meanwhile, tops the range at R208 900, and employs a continuously variable transmission rather than the conventional torque-converted used by its forebear.

It’s not yet clear whether the 1,2-litre iVTEC engine will retain the 65 kW/109 N.m outputs of the outgoing model, although we expect it will at least be tweaked for efficiency.

In South Africa, four exterior paint hues will be offered: Lunar Silver, Modern Steel, White Orchid and Radiant Red.

Honda says the Amaze sedan runs on an “all-new platform”, claiming the sedan boasts a “spacious interior”. It draws some styling inspiration from the likes of the latest Civic and BR-V, mimicking its larger siblings’ chrome-heavy facia.

Round back, though, the new model does away the first-generation’s chrome trim (although, in SA, you can add chrome garnish as an accessory) in favour of a simpler, cleaner look, with the taillamps now extending into the bootlid.

Honda has released its next-generation Amaze compact sedan in South Africa.

The new Amaze, formerly the Brio, is larger than its predecessor with an extended wheelbase and features a bold, head-turning design that’s unmistakably Honda. Inside, the sophisticated cabin is both stylish and exceptionally roomy.

It’s offered with two equipment levels – Trend and Comfort – with all models featuring a comprehensive array of active and standard safety features. Prices start from R179 900for the Amaze 1.2 Trend to R208 900 for the 1.2 Comfort CVT.

The range

As already indicated, the new Honda Amaze range consists of three models, all employing the same engine but offering a choice between two transmissions, and two trim levels.

The most affordable Amaze is the 1.2 Trend, available as a manual gearbox model only. However, even this so-called base model offers buyers an extensive list of standard equipment.

Exterior features include 15” alloy wheels shod with 175/65 R15 tyres, a roof-mounted sharkfin antenna, and a high-mounted third brake light.

Inside, smart cloth upholstery is standard, as is the tilt-adjustable multi-function steering wheel. The four-speaker audio system features FM/AM and MP3 functionality.

It also includes Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and hands-free telephony. Central locking is standard, while the exterior mirrors are adjusted manually.

Moving up to the 1.2 Comfort, the exterior gains colour-coding for the exterior mirrors and door handles, while low-mounted, recessed fog lamps are standard, too.

Inside, the Comfort includes everything that’s standard on Trend versions, but adds automatic air-conditioning and electric adjustment of the exterior mirrors, as well as automatic door locking once the vehicle starts moving.

The 1.2 Comfort CVT is identical in all respects to its manual-gearbox stablemate, but gains gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel to allow for manual shifts between the CVT’s virtual gears.

All three Honda Amaze models are available in a choice of four new colours - white silver metallic, steel metallic, and red metallic.

New design

A completely new design, the second-generation Honda Amaze was conceptualised as a sedan from the very beginning.

Honda SA says: “This allowed the design team to create a cohesive, streamlined shape with a flowing silhouette and a strong, individual character, while also expressing the current Honda design language.”

The new Amaze is only 5mm longer and 15mm wider than its predecessor, but the wheelbase has grown by a substantial 65 mm, which translates into shorter overhangs and more interior space.

The front is dominated by Honda’s characteristic ‘solid wing’ appearance, which manifests itself in a broad bar extending across the width of the contrasting black honeycomb grille.

A lower air intake is framed by recessed, black-framed foglights in the case of Comfort models. A slim, colour-coded splitter below the air intake adds a sporty finishing touch.

The smoothly curved roofline flows into a neatly integrated, raised rear deck, which is accentuated by the notched C-pillar.

The rear view is dominated by the C-shaped taillight clusters, which frame a bootlid that opens wide and deep. An integrated spoiler on the bootlid’s leading edge adds a sporty touch, while the colour-coded, integrated bumper extends into a stylised rear diffuser.

Inside

The cabin benefits from cloth upholstery though synthetic leather seat covers can be ordered as a no-cost option.

Gloss black detailing on the dashboard adds to a more premium design.

The centre stack is home to a audio system offering FM/AM radio functionality, as well as MP3 music file playback and Bluetooth, which allows hands-free telephony and music streaming. The four-speaker system also provides USB connectivity and an AUX socket.

A multifunction steering wheel allows safe and convenient control of the audio system, as well as making Bluetooth-linked hands-free cellphone calls. Generous cabin storage includes pockets in all four doors and cupholders in the centre console, while a fold-down rear seat armrest also incorporates cup holders for rear occupants.

Because of the new Amaze’s comparatively long 2.4m wheelbase, the interior is airy and spacious, with ample leg and headroom both front and rear. The boot capacity is a best-in-class 420 litres – 20 litres more than the original Brio Amaze.

Engine

The new Honda Amaze is powered by a four-cylinder 1199cc unit employs Honda’s i-VTEC intelligent valve timing management system, capable of 66kW/110Nm. In the entry-level Amaze Trend, a five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while buyers of the Comfort model can also opt for a new-generation Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT).

Manual-gearbox variants can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 123 sec, while the CVT version requires a still brisk 13.5 sec. Top speed is 160 km/h for all derivatives.

The manual-transmission Amaze models achieve a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 5.6-litres/100 km, while the CVT version is only slightly thirstier at 5.7-itres/100 km.

The Amaze’s all-new platform features an independent, McPherson strut-based front suspension, and a torsion beam rear set-up.

Overall refinement and NVH has been improved substantially, thanks to the new platform’s enhanced sound proofing and reduced engine noise transmission, as well as optimised engine mounts.

Safety

As one would expect of a Honda, the new Amaze sedan doesn’t skimp on safety features. The all-new platform makes extensive use of high-tensile steel, ensuring a lightweight but extremely rigid construction.

It also features Honda’s Advanced Compatibility structure, which allows for specific, programmed deformation of body structures in the case of a collision, while ensuring the integrity of the passenger safety cell.

All Honda Amaze models are fitted with dual front airbags, inertia reel seatbelts front and rear, and IsoFix child seat anchors. On the active safety front, ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EBD) are standard.

We have ourselves to blame for that, our preference for overpriced, mediocre and popular brand name cars over well specced less hyped cars is what brought us to this point. There is just no way the likes of Honda would go out of their way to offer an appealing product if they know they can get maximum profit with less.

+1, It's just that the average south african consumers are so quick to follow the hype of overpriced mediocrity that they fail to do their research properly and ignore the better specced car which offers more value.

Honda has launched the new Amaze compact sedan in South Africa. Take a look at specification and pricing for the new model.

Honda welcomes its new budget-conscious Amaze sedan to the local market this week. A total of 3 Amaze sedan derivatives will be on offer in both Trend and Comfort trim guises.

Honda believes that the new Amaze, which was developed from the ground up, will appeal to start-up families, young singles and mature motorists. There is no doubt that the Amaze will also appeal to the rental industry and ride services such as Uber.

Engine Choice
A 4-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine does service in the new Amaze and it offers 66 kW and 110 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on the entry-level Amaze Trend and a Amaze Comfort derivatives, the latter of which is also offered with a new-generation Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Honda Amaze weighs only 900 kg which contributes to reduced fuel economy with Honda claiming a 5.6 L/100km for the manual and 5.7 L/100km for the CVT.

Interior and Features

The Amaze’s dashboard features gloss piano black details while the instrument cluster is equipped with analogue speed and tachometer dials as well as a digital trip computer.

The seats are upholstered in cloth but synthetic leather seat covers can be ordered as a no-cost option. A basic 4-speaker sound system is fitted with FM/AM radio functionality as well as MP3 playback and Bluetooth functionality. A USB and Aux socket is also standard. The audio system can be controlled via the multifunction steering wheel. There are storage spaces in all 4 door mouldings and cup holders are found in the centre console and in the rear armrest to service rear passengers. Boot space is claimed at 420-litres, which is 20-litre larger than the previous Brio Amaze model.

In terms of safety, 2 front airbags are standard as is ABS with EBD. Front and rear inertia reel seatbelts are fitted and Isofix child seat anchors are included.

The Amaze 1.2 Trend is fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels, a mounted shark fin antenna and a high-mounted brake light, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, manual air conditioning and central locking system.

The Amaze 1.2 Comfort adds features such as colour-coded mirrors and door handles, fog lights, automatic air conditioning, electric side mirrors and automatic door locking.

The Amaze 1.2 Comfort CVT gains gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Honda's new 'Amaze' budget sedan touches down in SA

Honda’s second-generation Amaze, now sans the Brio badge, has been launched in South Africa, sporting a brand new look and roomier cabin, but still priced at the budget end of the spectrum, with the range starting at R179 900.

Clearly inspired by the latest Civic, the new Indian-built sedan has a more resolved look about it, although you could argue that it’s still a bit on the short and pudgy side. More importantly it has ‘grown up’ in every dimension, with length and width expanding by 5mm and 15mm respectively, but the big bonus is the 65mm wheelbase stretch that results in increased cabin space. Despite the shorter overhangs, boot space increases by 20 litres to a class-leading 420 litre capacity.

The Brio is built on a new platform that makes extensive use of high-strength steel, while enhanced sound-proofing and redesigned engine mounts reduce noise, vibration and harshness “substantially”, Honda claims.

The company’s familiar 1.2-litre normally aspirated four-pot carries over for cost reasons, but it’s perky for its size, producing 66kW at 6000rpm and 110Nm at 4800rpm, and getting the car from 0-100km/h in a claimed 12.3 seconds in the case of standard five-speed manual models, or 13.5 seconds if you ordered the Comfort CVT model.

The cabin has been redesigned, but there is no touch-screen infotainment on offer here, but buyers do get a conventional four-speaker sound system as standard.

It also appears that Honda SA’s hands were tied when it came to seat trim selection, the cars coming with a pale beige upholstery (below, left) of the kind that’s popular in India but not in any way suited to our market’s desires. Thankfully Honda SA is mindful of this and is prepared to offer a set of synthetic leather seat covers as a no-cost option (pictured on the right, below).

Two trim ‘flavours’ are on offer:

Baseline Trend comes with that aforementioned audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, as well as manual air conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking, tilt-adjustable multi-function steering wheel, dual front airbags, ABS brakes and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The Comfort adds automatic climate control to the mix along with electric mirrors, auto-locking on pull-off, fog lights and colour coding for the exterior mirrors and door handles.

Prices include a five-year/200 000km warranty and two-year/30 000km service plan.
