Officially announced. The most powerful, agile and extreme performance Jaguar road car ever - the 320km/h, 441kw Jaguar XE SV Project 8 sedan. Just 300 examples to be made.

Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) has revealed the most powerful, agile and extreme performance Jaguar road car ever - the 200mph, 600PS Jaguar XE SV Project 8 sedan.

The second Collector's Edition by SVO, following the successful F-TYPE Project 7 of 2014, Project 8 is a hand-built four-door sedan with supercar performance - designed to thrill driving enthusiasts, with an extraordinary combination of explosive power, dynamic agility and all-wheel-drive traction. To ensure exclusivity, no more than 300 examples will be created, each assembled at SVO's Technical Centre in Coventry.

John Edwards, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director, said: "SVO's raison d'être is to produce halo vehicles that push the boundaries in terms of luxury, performance and all-terrain capability. Project 8 is a great example of what happens when enthusiastic designers, engineers and manufacturing specialists are given the opportunity to create an extreme performance sports car without compromise. Project 8 will be assembled by hand in the new SVO Technical Centre, and we're confident that our enthusiastic and demanding clients will love driving Project 8 as much we do!"

Jaguar XE SV Project 8 exclusively features the most highly tuned version of Jaguar Land Rover's 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. The 600PS power unit, which has a Titanium Variable Active Exhaust, is complemented by Jaguar's All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system and motorsport-derived aerodynamics to deliver a 200mph top speed and 0-60mph in 3.3sec, making Project 8 the fastest accelerating Jaguar yet.

ENGINE

At the heart of Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is the latest evolution of Jaguar's well proven 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 modified to give a targeted power output of 600PS and 700Nm - the highest output of any Jaguar road car.

To achieve the outputs required for a 200mph performance sedan, SVO engineers have tuned the engine calibration software and enabled better breathing on both air intake and exhaust sides of the engine.

Say hello to the 441 kW Jaguar XE SV Project 8…

Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division has taken the wraps off the most powerful Jaguar road car ever. Say hello to the 320 km/h, 441 kW/700 N.m Jaguar XE SV Project 8 sedan.

The new model follows the F-Type Project 7 of 2014. The British automaker bills it as a hand-built four-door sedan “with supercar performance” (complete with a dedicated track mode). Just 300 examples will be produced at SVO’s Technical Centre in Coventry.

Unfortunately, Jaguar says Project 8 will be offered in left-hand drive configuration only…

Under the bonnet lurks a tuned version of Jaguar Land Rover’s familiar 5,0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine, mated to a titanium variable active exhaust system, eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Jaguar claims a top speed of a smidgen over 320 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of a little over 3,3 seconds.

And it’ll be just as easy to spot as it will be to hear. The exterior gains a carbon-fibre front bumper with aggressive cooling ducts, a vented carbon-fibre bonnet, flared wheel arches, 20-inch forged aluminium alloys, an adjustable front splitter, a carbon-fibre rear bumper (with diffuser) and a prominent adjustable wing on the back.

Project 8 uses the XE’s double-wishbone front and integral link rear suspension but gains stiffer springs and manually adjustable continuously variable dampers, including a 15 mm ride height drop for track use. There’s also a new carbon ceramic braking system, silicon nitride ceramic wheel bearings (apparently derived from F1 technology) and a rear electronic active differential with oil cooler.

Inside, you’ll find some gloss carbon-fibre trim as well as plenty of Alcantara. Two specifications will be offered at launch: a standard four-seat model and an optional two-seat “Track Pack” that includes lightweight front carbon-fibre racing seats (with four-point harnesses) and a harness retention hoop in place of the rear bench.

Jaguar XE SV Project 8 revealed as brand's quickest, most powerful road-car yet

Limited-run £150k saloon is claimed to hit 200mph and cover 0-60mph in 3.3sec

The new Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is “the most track-focused, road-going, uncompromised performance car that Jaguar has ever made”, according to Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations boss John Edwards.

The £149,995 Project 8 is a heavily modified, track-biased reworking of the XE saloon that has been designed to reach 200mph. It is the second ‘Collector’s Edition’ model produced by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division and the first to be built entirely at the SVO division’s Technical Centre near Coventry.

When developing the Project 8, SVO’s goal was to produce the quickest and most powerful road-going car that Jaguar has built. The resulting machine will be demonstrated in public for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this week.

The Project 8 is powered by a highly tuned version of JLR’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine. Development work on the supercharger has boosted the engine’s output to 592bhp, allowing an estimated 0-60mph time of 3.3sec. That power is delivered through Jaguar’s four-wheel drive system and a recalibrated version of the firm’s eight-speed Quickshift gearbox, which has been refined to reduce the shift time to 200 milliseconds using a ‘pistolshift’ lever.

As well as the 200mph target — 45mph more than the fastest production XE — the Project 8 was also tasked with an ability to set competitive lap times on a racing circuit, although the firm hasn’t publicly specified a time target for any given circuit.

SVO started developing the Project 8 last August and the car that will run at Goodwood this week is the second development version. The aim is to have the car signed off around September, with deliveries starting in May 2018.

It has already been tested at a range of competition venues, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and Jaguar is understood to be preparing for a lap record bid at the German circuit later this year. The firm’s desire to test it at race circuits is one reason why it has unveiled the high-performance XE to the public before the car has finished development.

The Project 8 has a downforce-producing adjustable front splitter, a flat underbody, a rear diffuser and carbonfibre bumper, and an adjustable rear wing.

Although the exterior looks broadly similar to the regular XE, it has been extensively reworked: 75% of the bodywork is new, with only the front doors and roof unchanged from the production models. In particular, the front headlights have been moved forward by 14mm to allow for extra cooling and engine work.

The Project 8 is fitted with a bespoke carbonfibre bonnet, which is 3kg lighter than the production version and includes an air extraction duct for extra engine cooling.

The wing panels around the rear wheels have been widened by 55mm to accommodate the 305-width tyres and also to help with the aerodynamics. The revised panels required SVO engineers to also install custom-made rear doors.

The car’s exterior was honed through wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics simulations. Jaguar says it has achieved a 205% reduction in lift in Track mode, with the car producing more than 122kg of downforce at 186mph.

Edwards said the emphasis on aerodynamic performance meant that “form follows function” where the bodywork is concerned. The exterior design was headed by Wayne Burgess, Jaguar’s production studio director, who said he took inspiration from Group B Lancia Delta Integrale rally cars. “It was a homologation special that linked a really powerful engine with all-wheeldrive transmission in a compact saloon body,” he said. “Project 8, for me, is that concept taken to its logical extreme.”

As well as the reworked engine and transmission, the XE SV Project 8’s mechanicals have been heavily reworked to boost performance. It is the first XE to feature an electronic active differential, which works with the Intelligent Drive Dynamics to manage torque delivery to the rear axle of the four-wheel drive system. The transmission has been reworked to deliver about 75% of the power to the rear wheels as standard.

The car features three drive modes: Normal, Dynamic (the default setting) and a new Track mode, which will adjust the engine map, dampers, steering and throttle for optimum performance.

There is double-wishbone front suspension, with an integral-link set-up at the rear, and the front and rear axles have been modified to boost lateral stiffness. Custom knuckles designed by SVO are machined from billet, with silicon nitride ceramic bearings to reduce unsprung mass by 840g. That is the first time that ceramic bearings have appeared on a JLR model.

There are height-adjustable spring platforms with motorsport-style coil springs, with the option of two available ride heights.

Another JLR first is the use of carbon-ceramic brakes, with 400mm front discs and 396mm discs at the rear. The car runs on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The wheels measure 9.5x20in at the front and 11x20in at the rear.

The Project 8 will be available in two forms: the ‘normal’ four-seat model and a two-seat Track Pack version. The ‘normal’ one, which features an entirely reworked rear bench, includes front performance seats. The Track Pack edition, meanwhile, gets carbonfibre racing seats with four-point harnesses.

The Track Pack version is 12.2kg lighter and also includes a ‘harness retention hoop’ (in essence, a half rollcage) and a fire extinguisher system.

Both versions of the car come with an Alcantara-clad instrument panel to reduce windscreen reflections. The same material is also used on the door panels and steering wheel. There is a 12.3in TFT instrument panel as part of the infotainment system, which includes a stopwatch and g-meter readout for use in conjunction with Track mode.

Just 300 cars will be built and all will be left-hand drive, which, SVO says, is a necessity due to the complex packaging and cooling of the reworked engine. JLR has yet to say how many models will be available in each market. The limited run is due to production capacity at SVO’s Ryton factory and also to safeguard the future resale value of the car for customers.

Jaguar XE R development car fans flames for new 567bhp V8 model

Sighting of an XE with a 5.0-litre V8 sparks suggestions that a new series model is on the way

Jaguar has been busy testing an XE development car running with its supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine, sparking suggestions that the brand will launch an XE R model.

The marque has recently launched the SV Project 8 with the same unit, but that hand-built XE is limited in production, meaning there is currently no V8-engined series model.

An inside source told Autocar that Jaguar will not produce an XE SVR model, despite rumours that it will. This is supported by previous trends in other model ranges, such as the F-Type and XJ, where an R model has come before any potential SVR.

Insurance database information does not reveal what specification the V8 engine featured in the test car is running in. It produces 592bhp in the limited-run SV Project 8, but expect it to offer about 567bhp in a production XE R, as it does in the F-Type SVR and new XJR models.

Autocar contacted Jaguar for comment on the prospect of an XE R, but a spokesman responded with the brand’s official line, “We do not discuss our future product plans”, leaving the door open but with no more certainty.

New Jaguar XE SV Project 8 guns for Nurburgring four-door lap record
Monster new super-saloon, being developed by Jaguar's Special Vehicles Operations, features 5.0-litre V8 engine tuned for 592bhp

Jaguar development drivers are pushing the brand's most powerful road-going car, the XE SV Project 8, to its limit at the Nürburgring, with the objective of setting a new lap record.

The 592bhp saloon model, a Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) creation, is at the end of its pre-production schedule and on course for customer deliveries from May 2018. Jaguar is understood to be eager to secure the fastest time for four-door models around Germany's Green Hell.

The car, which is the brand's second special edition following the Jaguar F-Type Project 7 in 2014, will have to beat the current quickest four-door, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, and its 7min 32sec time. The XE's advantage will come with its much clearer track focus, which makes it so far removed from the regular XE that it will be hand-built at SVO’s Technical Centre in Coventry rather than at the regular plant in Solihull.

Like the Project 7, the special XE model makes use of Jaguar's supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine. But power has been ramped up to unprecedented levels, peaking at 23bhp more than the special-edition F-Type. The XE SV is all-wheel drive, rather than being rear-driven like the Project 7, and uses a specially tuned version of its eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

The Project 8 is Jaguar's most accelerative current model, with a 0-60mph time of 3.3sec beating the all-wheel-drive F-Type SVR by two-tenths. This edges the XE SV into the realms of the Porsche 911 GT3 and ahead of fellow limited-run track special, the BMW M4 GTS.

Jaguar's £149,995 model uses racing-specification bodywork to produce downforce. It gets an adjustable front splitter, a flat underbody, a rear diffuser and carbonfibre bumper, and an adjustable rear wing.

Although the exterior looks broadly similar to the regular XE, it has been extensively reworked: 75% of the bodywork is new, with only the front doors and roof unchanged from the production models. In particular, the front headlights have been moved forward by 14mm to allow for extra cooling and engine work.

The Project 8 gets a bespoke carbonfibre bonnet that's 3kg lighter than the production version. It also includes an air extraction duct for extra engine cooling.

Its widened body features arches that extend 55mm further out to accommodate the 305-width tyres. The revised panels required SVO engineers to also install custom-made rear doors.

The car’s exterior has been developed with wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamics simulations. Jaguar says it has achieved a 205% reduction in lift in Track mode, with the car producing more than 122kg of downforce at 186mph.

Giulia Toppled! Jaguar Claims Sedan ‘Ring Lap Record

Jaguar says that its XE SV Project 8 is now the world’s fastest four-door sedan around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, claiming a lap time of 7:21,23.

That makes it nearly 11 seconds quicker than the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio that previously held the unofficial title.

Thing is, the British automaker describes the vehicle that set the lap record as a “production-intent prototype” rather than an actual production car. Semantics? We’ll leave that up to you to decide…

Still, the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is an impressive piece of kit. Developed by the brand’s Special Vehicle Operations division, its 5,0-litre supercharged V8 makes 441 kW and 700 N.m, giving the sedan a claimed top speed of 320 km/h.

Just 300 examples will be produced at SVO’s Technical Centre in Coventry, all in left-hand drive configuration.

“The SVO design and engineering team’s mission was to create the most track-focused road-legal Jaguar in history – not only the fastest, but also the most agile,” said Mark Stanton, SVO Director.

“As a result, only the roof and front door skins of Project 8’s body are carried over unaltered from XE and 75% of its mechanical hardware is new. This astonishing Nürburgring Nordschleife record validates the success of such extensive changes.”

Jaguar smashes Nurburgring record for sedans

Jaguar's XE SV Project 8 sedan has become the world’s fastest four-door car around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, smashing the record by nearly 11 seconds.

A pre-production prototype set a stunning time of 7min 21.2sec at the legendary 20.8km German circuit, shattering the lap set by the previously fastest four-door car, the Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, which set a 7.32 in 2015.

The Project 8 also lapped quicker than some of the world’s fastest supercars including the Ferrari Enzo (7:25) and Pagani Zonda (7:24).

Developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the XS SV Project 8 is the most powerful road-legal Jaguar yet built, boasting 441kW from its 5-litre Supercharged V8 engine to give it a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 322km/h.

Each car will be hand-assembled at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, England and total production will be limited to 300 cars worldwide – unfortunately none of them destined for South Africa.

“The SVO design and engineering team’s mission was to create the most track-focused road-legal Jaguar in history – not only the fastest, but also the most agile,” said Mark Stanton, SVO Director.

“As a result, only the roof and front door skins of Project 8’s body are carried-over unaltered from XE sedan and 75 per cent of its mechanical hardware is new. This astonishing Nürburgring Nordschleife record validates the success of such extensive changes.”

To date the V6 turbo-engined XJ220 of the 1990s is still the fastest road-legal Jaguar in a straight line with its 341.7km/h top speed, but its Nurburgring laptime of 7:46 pales against the Project 8’s.
