2018 Jeep Wrangler revealed in leaked handbook

2018 model exposed in a leaked user manual; new model drops 2.8-litre engine in exchange for 2.0-litre unit

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler has been leaked online in a user manual, revealing the refreshed styling and details about the car’s powertrain.

Predictably, Jeep has chosen to keep the car’s throwback styling, with subtle tweaks to the headlights, grille and indicator cluster refreshing the appearance of the 2018 model year car. The full manual was leaked onto a Wrangler fan forum.

Under the bonnet, there’s either a 2.0-litre four-cylinder or 3.6-litre V6 engine; the current car’s 2.8-litre powerplant has been dropped, at least from the US-specification car. The smaller engine has a 907kg (2000lb) towing capacity, while the 3.6 can pull a trailer of up to 1587kg. It also has a system designed to stop trailer snaking.

Inside, it’s also similar to the current-generation car, although there’s a choice between 7.0in and 8.4in infotainment displays. The larger of these has sat-nav, while both systems have climate controls integrated.

The screens can also display a host of off-road-focused information, including axle status, steering angle and the car’s altitude, longitude and latitude. There is also a separate display for pitch and roll angles.

As well as adjustable electronic stability control, the new Wrangler will have automatic emergency braking and Rain Brake Support, which assists braking when wet weather is detected. Adaptive steering weighting is also available and can adapt to different driving conditions. More hardcore off-roading Rubicon models are more likely to get the advanced off-roading technology, however.

As with the current-generation Wrangler, the 2018 car will get both two and four-door variants. For the new generation, the windscreen can be folded down.

All-New Jeep Wrangler Will Be Revealed Next Month

After some manual leaks showing us the new Wrangler, the “official” reveal date is the 29th of November at the LA Auto Show.

We say “official” because Fiat Chrysler has confirmed that its next-generation Jeep Wrangler will be unveiled for the whole world to see next month but did not give an official date. We think the LA Auto Show is a safe bet as they have scheduled a major press conference for the show.

In 2019, a diesel option will arrive and buyers can also choose between either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic as well as a removable soft top, a three-piece hard top with removable panels, or a brand-new power sliding top, though it’s not removable.

As has been the case with every Wrangler, production will continue to take place in Toledo, Ohio.

Details as to what will be offered in South Africa will be released once the car has been unveiled.

First pictures of Jeep's 'all-new' Wrangler

Jeep has had to walk a tightrope with its new-generation Wrangler, keeping up with modern comfort and efficiency requirements while retaining the basic flavour and capability of the outgoing model.

That’s no easy task, but Jeep certainly appears to have stuck to the Wrangler’s roots with the 2018 model that you see here. Only three pictures have been released thus far, along with very limited information, but Jeep promises to spill all the beans at the Los Angeles Motor Show on November 29.

Although Jeep is referring to it as “all-new” we’ll have to wait until the end of the month to find out just how different it is beneath the skin.

All Jeep is saying for now is that is that it has “advanced" and "fuel-efficient” engines, and that it’s “loaded with more safety features and advanced technology than ever before.”

Purists will however appreciate that the doors are still removable and the windscreen still folds down, and Jeep is promising even better off-road ability.

The styling, as you can see here, also stays true to the Wrangler's roots, but there are a few notable differences, like headlights that push into the ‘keystone’ grille, and additional lights integrated into the wheel arches.

And yet perhaps the most exciting news for South Africans is that there will also be a bakkie version this time around.

Here’s A First Look At The 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Although very little finer detail accompanies its release, here is a first image of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler; the iconic SUV its maker labels its most capable off-roader ever to date. While the new Wrangler remains true to its predecessor in terms of styling, some modern touches have been added.

Trim lines revealed here include Sahara and Rubicon variants. Notable visual differences between the old and new Wrangler include updated fender and new headlamps and indicator lenses. Jeep claims the design offers improved aerodynamics. Added presence on Rubicon models include an integrated roll cage and an old-school fold-down front windscreen for “off-road purists”.

Engine/transmission combinations have yet to been specified though Jeep has mentioned “advanced fuel-efficient powertrains” to be offered on the Jeep Wrangler. It’s not yet clear whether the range will include a naturally aspirated 3,6-litre V6 and 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine option.

Accordingly, Mopar has also revealed a catalogue of over 200 accessories that future owners of the new Wrangler will have to choose from. These include lift-kits, deadlock-capable wheels, off-road bumpers, LED off-road lights and “rock rails”.

Customers will also be able to spec roof rails or a soft top roof, a tailgate table and a moulded cargo tray to make the Wrangler that much more practical. Vehicle graphics and custom fuel caps are also offered.

More technical information around the new Jeep Wrangler will be revealed at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show later this month. The new Wrangler is expected to arrive in SA shortly after the 527 kW Grand Cherokee Trackhawk‘s launch.

2018 Jeep Wrangler revealed at SEMA

New model maintains throwback styling, drops 2.8-litre engine for 2.0-litre unit

The first official images of the new Jeep Wrangler have been released ahead of the SUV's official launch at the Los Angeles motor show next month.

The images of the Wrangler were shown during a presentation by Mopar, the FCA Group’s parts arm, at the SEMA show in Las Vegas.

The official images confirm that Jeep has kept the throwback styling of the Wrangler, with subtle tweaks to the headlights, grille and indicator cluster.

At SEMA, Mopar also displayed its full range of accessories and performance parts – more than 200 in total – that will be available from launch for the new Wrangler. According to Mopar boss Pietro Gorlier, more than 98% of Wranglers sold feature some form of customisation options, with the most popular options sidesteps and a noise-reducing headliner. While Mopar is focused on the US market, Gorlier noted that all of the performance parts would be available for Wrangler customers worldwide as long as they meet local regulations.

Jeep did not reveal any further details about the Wrangler but a user manual leaked online earlier this month has revealed some details about the machine’s powertrain options.

Now Jeep Shows Off Its New Wrangler’s Interior

At the start of the month, Jeep finally released the first official images of its new Wrangler. But the automaker limited the unveiling to the exterior of the vehicle. Now, however, Jeep has given us a glimpse inside the updated cabin.

The two latest press photographs show what Jeep bills as an interior design that combines “authentic styling, precision craftsmanship and high-quality materials”. The brand also promises “improved versatility and comfort for drivers and passengers”.

From the images of the new Wrangler Rubicon model, we can see that Jeep has added a central screen to the instrument cluster, updated the infotainment display and repositioned various restyled elements, from the air vents to pretty much all the switches. The grab-rail on the passenger side of the facia, however, remains in place, albeit with a slightly different look.

Jeep has emphasised that its new Wrangler will be offered with a “fold-down windshield for off-road purists, even more open-air freedom and dozens of different door, top and windshield combinations”.

Expect more information (and images) to be released at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month.

2018 Jeep Wrangler Revealed

Jeep has shown off its all-new Wrangler and while details are sparse, pictures give us a good look at the capable SUV, both inside and out.

Jeep claims that its new Wrangle boasts more 4x4 capability, new fuel-efficient engines, more ways to drop the top as well as additional safety technology. While the design has not changed dramatically, minor cosmetic differences will be noticeable to keen-eyed observers.

Upon the Jeep Wrangler's introduction, it will be available in 2- and 4-door guises and in 3 trim levels: Sport, Sahara and Rubicon. The Sport trim has tow hooks, electronic stability control, tinted glass, a fuel tank skid plate, hill start assist, keyless go, full-size spare wheel, traction control and a 5-inch Uconnect infotainment system.

Sahara models feature air conditioning, heavy-duty suspension with gas shocks, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated electrically adjustable mirrors, a rear stabilizer bar, remote keyless entry, a security alarm, plus a 7-inch infotainment screen. Finally, the hardcore Rubicon has an 8.4-inch Uconnect system, Tru-lok front and rear axles, rock protection sill rails, performance suspension, 17-inch off-road tyres, front disconnecting stabiliser bar, Dana wide (front and rear) axles, as well as a 4.10 rear axle ratio for hardcore offroading.

Customers will be able to customise their Wrangles via the comprehensive Mopar catalogue. We predict the new Jeep Wrangler will become available in the South African market around the middle of 2018.

2019 Jeep Wrangler lands with new hybrid engine and big tech boost

New SUV is due to land on British shores in 2019 with its first electrified powertrain option

Jeep has pulled the covers off its latest Wrangler, which is due in Britain by 2019 with a new mild hybrid powertrain for the first time.

The American SUV, on show at the LA motor show, has been given a big technical boost to bring it up to date, but designers have been sure to retain the familiar look of its forebears, which stretch back to 1986.

It’s offered in two- and four-door guises in Sport, Sport S, Sahara (exclusive to the four-door) and Rubicon trim. The model gets new LED lighting and is available with more open-air options, including one that enables the doors and roof to be removed.

Inside, Jeep’s Uconnect infotainment technology features within a centrally mounted touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Base cars get a 5.0in screen, but 7.0in and 8.4in versions are available in higher models. A 7.0in digital LED instrument cluster display is also available; base cars make do with a 3.5in screen between the dials

The car, due on American roads first at the start of next year, is the first Wrangler to get a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that uses a twin-scroll turbocharger and new eTorque technology.

This mild hybrid system outputs a maximum of 270bhp and 295lb ft of torque, while also enabling significant improvements to efficiency. Stop/start technology is included, and the engine can switch off when the car is coasting.

The Wrangler is also offered with a 3.6-litre petrol engine with 285bhp and 260lb ft of torque, while a 3.0-litre diesel that produces 260bhp and 442lb ft will be added to the range from 2019. Both units use start/stop technology.

As standard, the Wrangler sends torque through a six-speed manual gearbox, but an eight-speed automatic is also on offer. Drive is channelled to all four wheels, with low-ratio 4:1 locking differentials available (they’re standard on Rubicon cars).

Like its predecessors, the new Wrangler is based on a body-on-frame chassis design. It features five-link suspension, while the roll centre height has been raised and spring rates retuned to boost the car’s off-road abilities and improve ride quality.

Jeep claims that the car can wade through water up to 760mm deep, just 40mm short of what the larger Range Rover Sport can manage, and drive up inclines with a 44 degree approach and a departure angle of 37 degrees. The car’s ground clearance is 277mm.

Alongside its off-road hardware, the new car gets a raft of new safety tech, with 75 active and passive systems available. These include blind spot monitoring, electronic roll mitigation and rear-cross path detection technology.

When the new Wrangler arrives in the UK, it will likely do so in higher numbers than before. The UK volume of the current Wrangler, which is still available to buy in Britain, is low but consistently stable, with 322 units delivered last year. Jeep UK is understood to be pushing for a boost in available numbers when the next-generation Wrangler arrives following requests from prospective customers for more cars.

Legendary go-anywhere 4x4 capability: Most capable SUV ever without compromise

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler delivers legendary off-road capability courtesy of two advanced 4x4 systems, and for the first time in Wrangler's history, a two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio that is available on Sahara models. This new Selec-Trac full-time two-speed transfer case is intuitive and allows the driver to set it and forget it, while constantly sending power to the front and rear wheels.

The Command-Trac 4x4 system features a two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, and next-generation solid Dana front and rear axles with a 3.45 rear axle ratio.

On Wrangler Rubicon, a Rock-Trac 4x4 system features heavy duty next-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a "4LO" ratio of 4:1. A 4.10 front and rear axle ratio is standard as are Tru-Lok locking differentials.

Wrangler Rubicon models offer improved articulation and total suspension travel versus the previous generation with help from an electronic sway-bar disconnect. With the standard six-speed manual transmission, Wrangler Rubicon has an impressive and improved crawl ratio of 84.2:1, and 77.2:1 on Rubicon models equipped with the new eight-speed automatic transmission - both of which makes scaling any obstacle on the trail easy.

Both Command-Trac and Rock-Trac systems offer full-time torque management, enabling optimal grip in low-traction conditions.

An available Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential provides extra torque and grip during slippery, low-traction situations, such as driving over sand, gravel, snow or ice.

Modern take on authentic Jeep Wrangler design

The all-new 2018 Jeep Wrangler builds on a sculptural design aesthetic that is immediately recognizable as the icon of the brand with its traditional Jeep design cues. The Wrangler's new exterior design is bold and rugged with a wide stance and lowered beltline with bigger windows for better outward visibility, especially out on the trails.

A robust roofline and muscular fenders create an unmistakably Jeep profile. Two-piece body-color fender flares with a black lower insert give a raised profile, and are standard on Sahara and available on Rubicon models.

Jeep's design team gave the legendary seven-slot grille an updated look that now shows both outer grille slats intersecting with the headlights, paying homage to the Jeep CJ. The top of the keystone-shaped grille has been gently swept back for improved aerodynamics.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler features a traditional clamshell hood with new distinctive hood latches, while the dual-vented Power Dome hood is standard on Rubicon models.

The windshield's rake has been optimized for improved aerodynamics and features a new four-bolt design at the top of the windshield to fold down quickly and easily. All Wrangler models feature a new rubber windshield bumper design, which incorporates the footmen's loop, windshield washer nozzle and hood bumpers into one part. A new header bar now connects the A-pillars and stays in place even when the windshield is folded down. This allows the rearview mirror to remain in place with the windshield folded.

New lightweight, high-strength aluminum doors combined with door pins that are staggered lengths allow for ease of installation and removal. The Torx bit tool size is now stamped directly onto the aluminum door hinge to eliminate guessing which tool size is needed to remove the doors. A new half-door design will be available starting in 2019.

A new aluminum and magnesium swing gate gives way to a wider opening, making it easier to load bulky objects. A stamped metal information plaque adorns the inside of the swing gate and is reminiscent of those on the original Jeep Willys.

The rear license plate holder now sits on the rear bumper to accommodate the spare tire, which has been lowered to enhance rearward visibility. An integrated spoiler combined with rounded roof edges helps air pass over the vehicle. The rear wiper has also been relocated to the bottom of the glass to enhance rearward visibility.

Available LED headlamps and fog lamps on Sahara and Rubicon models offer crisp white lighting and add to the Wrangler's distinctive look. The forward turn signals - standard LEDs on Sahara and Rubicon - are positioned on the front of the trapezoid wheel flares, while the daytime running lights now form a halo around the outside perimeter of the headlights. From behind, traditional square tail lamps feature available LED lighting on Sahara and Rubicon models.

The short front and rear overhangs, and available steel bumpers with removable end caps, enable an unrivaled approach angle, which helps give Wrangler its legendary capability.

As the only true open-air 4x4 SUV on the market, Wrangler continues to offer a variety of top options, including an all-new Sky One-Touch powertop, available on Sahara and Rubicon 4-door models, which is easy to use and strengthens Wrangler's promise of utility and adventure by allowing occupants to retract the full-length open canvas roof with a push of a button. The rear quarter windows are removable for even more open-air freedom.

An all-new premium Sunrider soft top, available on all Wrangler models, has been improved and provides an easy open-air option that quiets road noise. The new soft top relies on clock springs to help quickly raise and lower the top.

Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon models share a body-color hardtop option, offering a unique, premium appearance, while a black three-piece hardtop, available on all Wrangler models, offers even more options for open-air driving. Integrated gutter rails above the doors and a rear cargo window enable the simple installation of a roof rack system.

Customers have the choice of seven available wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17 to 18 inches.

The new 2018 Jeep Wrangler will have 10 exterior colors from which to choose: Black, Bright White, Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Hella Yella, Ocean Blue Metallic, Punk 'n Metallic, Sting-Gray, Mojito! and Billet Silver Metallic.

The classic round headlights, trapezoidal two-piece wheel flares, removable doors, new half doors, exposed hinges now with the Torx bit tool number stamped into the hinge, fold-down windshield, innovative removable hard and soft tops and an all-new Sky One-Touch powertop allow Wrangler to retain the brand's iconic appearance and function.

With room for five adults, Jeep Wrangler remains the only four-door 4x4 open-air vehicle on the market.
