Lexus Luxury LS Lands in SA
The flagship luxury sedan from Lexus has arrived in South Africa. Lexus claims it brings premium levels of powertrain smoothness, spaciousness, handling, ride comfort, safety, craftsmanship and attention to detail. Let's meet the new Lexus LS 500.
Riding on a new rear-wheel-drive platform and featuring trademark Lexus design cues like the spindle grille, the new Lexus LS 500, now in its fifth generation, is promising a lot. Underneath that bonnet is an interesting powertrain. It's a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 packing 310 kW and 600 Nm, meaning this luxury limo is capable of 100 kph sprints in 5 seconds. Lexus claims this engine promises V8 levels of power without the thirst associated with an 8-cylinder engine. Power goes to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Lexus claims its new LS 500 consumes 9.5 L/ 100 km.
The new Lexus boasts adaptive variable damping as well as air suspension, with the aim of providing ultimate comfort irrespective of road quality as well as being able to raise/lower the car for easy access. Lexus has fitted its new LS 500 with 20-inch alloys wrapped in run-flat rubber and there are 11 colour options.
The cabin is where it becomes really special. While the rear of the LS 500 is arguably the best place to be, the new version features a driver-focused cockpit filled with luxury elements such as metal and wood as well as leather in abundance. The rear cabin features a multi-function touchscreen in the rear centre armrest console which is used to precisely control the position of the rear seats, together with audio, climate, sunshade and interior lighting functions. There are three preset seat modes: Business, which is the default; Entertain, which reclines the seat for comfortable viewing of the entertainment monitor, and Relax, which extends the leg ottoman, deeply reclines the seatback and moves the front passenger seat to its further forward position to provide maximum legroom. The rear seats feature 22-way adjustment too! The front seats are just as comfortable with 28-way adjustment and massage functionality.

The new, fifth-generation Lexus LS sedan has officially arrived in South Africa, sporting a fresh twin-turbo 3,5-litre V6.
Badged as the LS500, the latest version of the Toyota-backed brand’s largest luxury sedan sits on the new GA-L platform, with 310 kW and 600 N.m sent to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission (with paddle shifters).
The result is a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 5,0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is listed as 9,5 L/100 km.
The price? Well, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus LS500 costs R2 141 400, which includes a new seven-year/105 000 km warranty and full maintenance plan.
The new LS boasts a new adaptive variable suspension system as well as air suspension (the latter includes a “Premium Access” function that automatically raises the sedan by 40 mm when the vehicle is unlocked, ostensibly allowing easier ingress). A set of run-flat tyres wrapped around 20-inch high-gloss alloys comes standard, while 11 exterior paint finishes are offered in South Africa.
The driver’s seat features 28-way power and pneumatic adjustment, including new controls to adapt support for the back, pelvis and hips. Meanwhile, a multifunction touchscreen in the rear centre armrest console is used to control the position of the rear seats, as well as audio, climate, sunshade and interior lighting functions.
At the back, there are three pre-set positions for the pews. “Business” is the default; “Entertain” reclines the seat for comfortable viewing of the monitor; and “Relax” extends the ottoman, deeply reclines the seatback and moves the front passenger seat to its further forward position to provide maximum legroom of 1 022 mm.

Verdict
In this segment, brand cachet counts for so much. With the iconic Mercedes-Benz S-Class leading the pack for goodness knows how long, Lexus was always going to be an underdog. Does this mean the LS 500 is not an excellent product and unworthy of a second look? Absolutely not. What Lexus has achieved in terms of design, build quality, refinement and comfort with its newcomer is nothing short of remarkable. We'd forgive Lexus for the quirky ergonomics, fussy infotainment system (and its ho-hum graphics), because the rest of the package is supreme. The build quality is supreme, the refinement is next-level and the new-generation blown V6 motor befitting the flagship of the Japanese luxury marque. While the refinement and calm driving demeanour of the Lexus are to be commended, the best place to be is in the back.
With features such as rear entertainment and massage functions – for all occupants – as standard, the LS 500 is not only a pleasant saloon to drive, but to be driven in. That's a first-class car's raison d'etre. It's nothing short of an exceptional vehicle and while the bulk of sales in this rarefied segment are most likely to still go the way of more entrenched players, we expect there will be a handful of discerning businessmen who'd prefer to have something different. With this car, you've certainly arrived.

Here’s how much the new Lexus LS500 F Sport costs in SA
The new F Sport version of the Lexus LS500 is set to arrive in South Africa soon, but we’ve already unearthed local pricing for this latest variant in the Japanese brand’s luxury saloon range.
Interestingly, priced from R1 975 900, the LS500 F Sport is actually some R175 200 less expensive than the standard LS500 (which is priced from R2 151 100). Strange, but these are the figures currently listed on Lexus SA’s website.
Lexus says the F Sport version offers an “engaging driving spirit through carefully applied chassis tuning and enhancements, while still emphasising exceptional comfort”.
Exterior design features include a special front grille, “F Sport” badging on the fenders and model-specific 20-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, you’ll find front seats exclusive to the F Sport model (and trimmed in “smooth leather”) along with scored aluminium trim elements, a three-spoke F Sport steering wheel as well as a speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a ring that slides to display information. Alloy pedals plus an F Sport shift lever are also included.
The LS500 F Sport furthermore gains the latest generation of the Japanese firm’s “advanced chassis control”, which Lexus says implements “co-operative control” of all vehicle subsystems – braking, steering, powertrain and suspension – to adjust basic longitudinal, lateral and vertical motion as well as yaw, roll and pitch. Larger brakes, variable gear ratio steering, dynamic rear steering and sport-tuned air suspension were also listed when this model hit the global stage back in April 2017.
As with the existing LS500, power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3,5-litre V6, which delivers an unchanged 310 kW and 600 N.m to the rear axle via a ten-speed automatic transmission.

As we pointed out in that original story, the F Sport derivative is priced at R1 975 900, which makes it some R175 200 less expensive than the standard LS500 (which is priced from R2 151 100).
Lexus South Africa describes the LS500 as “more luxury-biased” than the F Sport model, boasting features such as a vibrating seat massage function and seat ventilation, both for front and rear occupants.
Still, the F Sport version gains plenty of its own special features, including a model-specific grille, fetching F Sport 20-inch alloys and added exterior badging, as well as an F Sport steering wheel, new alloy pedals and sports seats finished in “smooth leather”. Suede headlining and various fresh bits of interior trim are also included, along with a special speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter.
