Update for the top-dog Rangey. As always stellar detailing.

Range Rover (2018)

More than ever, Range Rover represents the pinnacle of luxury travel, making every journey a treasured experience whether driving or being driven.

Conceived nearly 50 years ago for the country set to use on the estate and then drive to the townhouse, Range Rover has continuously evolved to lead the world around it, remaining the peerless luxury SUV.

Today technology drives the new Range Rover's next major step, with a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain providing sustainable luxury with new levels of efficiency and capability complementing its refinement and desirability. The exterior design has evolved, while heightened comfort and new consumer technologies have been added to the cabin.

Comfort-enhancing functions transform the travelling experience for the driver and passengers. The front seats feature up to 24-way movement thanks to the new seat frames, with wider and deeper foams as well as heated arm rests. In the rear a completely redesigned cabin and seating layout create a tranquil sanctuary with no compromise to the rear load space.

If you're working while being driven, up to 17 connection points including domestic plug sockets, USB, HDMI and 12-volt are all available; 4G Wi-Fi hotspots for up to eight devices and convenient storage are all designed for the business traveller. The cabin is tailored for relaxation with luxurious seats offering 25 massage programmes thanks to Hot Stone massage technology within the seat backs.

Wider, softer seats offer sumptuous comfort. Reclining by up to 40 degrees, they make the most of the additional 186mm legroom (now 1,206mm in total) which the Autobiography Long Wheelbase model has to offer, and can be deployed at the touch of button. The exemplary comfort extends to heated and cooled seats, plus heated arm, foot and calf rests. For additional convenience and personalisation, all seat functionality can be controlled via a smartphone app, whether inside or outside the vehicle.

The elegance of the interior has been elevated by the seamless integration of the most advanced infotainment system yet created by Jaguar Land Rover. Touch Pro Duo, codenamed 'Blade', combines two high-definition 10-inch touchscreens on the centre console working in perfect harmony. Information can be swiped from one screen to the other, making the layout highly intuitive and engaging to operate, with unrivalled functionality.

Following the introduction of the new Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) last week, Jaguar Land Rover's ICE to ACE journey continues, moving from conventional internal combustion engines to autonomous, connected and electrified vehicles.

The efficient new Range Rover P400e PHEV provides sustainable performance by combining a 300hp (221kW) 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine with an 85kW electric motor. The 404hp (297kW) total available power output[1] - available through the permanent four-wheel drive system - delivers 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 137mph.

With an impressive 640Nm of torque, the new powertrain combines to deliver dynamic performance with traditional Range Rover capability, comfort and refinement.

Range Rover facelift brings all-new P400e plug-in hybrid variant

Range Rover receives minor facelift and gains 557bhp flagship engine and plug-in hybrid

Land Rover is ramping up its electrified range with the revised Range Rover, which now offers a plug-in petrol hybrid with 31 miles of electric-only range.

The introduction of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to the updated Range Rover line-up follows the announcement last week of the Range Rover Sport PHEV, which uses an identical powertrain.

The two models now spearhead the Jaguar Land Rover plan to have an electrified version of every model on sale by 2020.

The updated Range Rover, which rivals the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Bentley Bentayga, also gets an overhauled interior to bring it into line with the Velar and a new range-topping SVAutobiography Dynamic. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design director, said of the new cabin: "This interior is a revelation, rest assured".

The most powerful production Range Rover yet, the SVAutobiography Dynamic uses a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol V8 with 557bhp, a 15bhp increase over its predecessor, and has 516lb ft of torque. It covers 0-62mph in 5.4sec, 1.4sec slower than the W12-powered Bentayga.

Created by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations, the range-topper has a new chassis calibration to optimise performance as an alternative to the standard Comfort mode. This lowers the ride height by 8mm and is designed to “heighten driver engagement without compromising comfort”, according to the firm.

The flagship model also gets an exclusive mesh grille design with chrome inserts and a revised rear bumper with integrated metal tailpipes.

The new Range Rover P400e PHEV combines a 296bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol unit with a 114bhp electric motor, offering a total output of 398bhp available through the permanent four-wheel-drive system. It delivers 0-62mph in 6.8sec and a top speed of 137mph. On the combined cycle, it emits 64g/km of CO2 and achieves 101mpg.

The P400e, which is offered in both standard and long-wheelbase styles, replaces the SDV6 Hybrid Diesel powertrain that was previously offered.

JLR vehicle line director Nick Collins said: “[The PHEV] isn’t simply a no-compromise solution. It builds on the traditions of our flagship SUV and delivers heightened refinement and comfort with impressive performance and efficiency.”

The P400e offers two driving modes: the default Parallel Hybrid and EV.

Parallel Hybrid mode combines petrol and electric drive and allows the driver to optimise battery charge or fuel economy. It has a Save function that prevents the battery charge dropping below a selected level. A Predictive Energy Optimisation function requires you to enter a destination into the navigation system. The system, which is similar to that in many new plug-in hybrids such as the BMW 330e, then uses GPS altitude data to optimise the switch between electric motor and petrol engine, maximising fuel economy over different gradients.

The 13.1kWh lithium ion battery sits at the rear beneath the boot floor, so there is less boot space than in the standard car. Charging cable access is behind the Land Rover badge on the right of the front grille.

Land Rover says a full charge can take as little as two hours and 45 minutes via a special home wall box, but a standard charge takes seven hours and 30 minutes.

A full range of petrol and diesel powertrains, including V6 and V8 units, sits alongside the SVAutobiography Dynamic and P400e in the line-up.

Styling changes across the range include a refreshed grille with a gloss black surround and a front bumper with widened vent blades. At the rear, the updated bumper integrates the exhaust tailpipes in all models.

In addition, there are six new alloy wheel designs, two new metallic paint colours (Rossello Red and Byron Blue) and four LED headlight options.

The most dramatic overhaul is inside, with equipment now more in step with the Velar. The line-up gets Touch Pro Duo infotainment, which features two 10.0in touchscreens on the central console. The front seats have new seat frames with wider and deeper foams and heated armrests.

There are also up to 17 connection points, including domestic plug sockets and USB, as well as 4G wi-fi hotspots for up to eight devices.

The updated Range Rover starts from £79,595 for the 3.0-litre TDV6 Vogue, £2800 more than the equivalent outgoing model. The P400e is priced from £86,895 and the SVAutobiography Dynamic costs £141,580 — £21,120 less than the W12 Bentayga. The long-wheelbase Range Rover starts at £112,900.

MEET THE REFRESHED RANGE ROVER (IN PHEV FORM, TOO)

The updated Range Rover has been revealed, and like the refreshed Range Rover Sport unveiled just a week ago, a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) derivative – with “uncompromised off-road capability” – has been added.

Of course, there have been a few subtle changes to the exterior design as well, while the British brand claims “heightened comfort” and new technologies (such as a gesture sunblind) have been added to the cabin.

Indeed, the front seats now boast up to 24-way adjustment thanks to new seat frames, with wider and deeper foams, as well as heated arm-rests. And the brand’s latest infotainment system has also been added, combining a pair of high-definition, 10-inch touchscreens.

In addition, Range Rover says the rear quarters have been “completely redesigned” with no compromise to the rear load space. The pews back there now feature 25 massage programmes, a 40-degree reclining function and a claimed additional 186 mm of legroom in the case of the Autobiography long wheelbase derivative. All seat functionality can be controlled via a smartphone app, whether inside or outside the vehicle.

There are up to 17 connection points (from domestic plug sockets, USB and HDMI points to 12-volt sockets) available, as well as 4G Wi-Fi hotspots for up to eight devices.

So, what about that new PHEV model? Well, it’s badged the Range Rover P400e, and it combines a 2,0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine with an 85 kW electric motor (housed in the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission) for a total system output of 297 kW and 640 N.m.

Sent to all four corners, this is enough for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint of 6,8 seconds and a maximum speed of 220 km/h. According to Range Rover, the P400e emits just 64 g/km of CO2, providing an all-electric range of up to 51 km.

We should soon learn more about which derivatives (such as the SVAutobiography Dynamic model) are destined for South Africa…

Range Rover gets even posher with 2018 upgrades

There are so many different Range Rover models on offer these days that it’s easy to forget about the original, big Rangie that continues to occupy the throne at the very top of the line-up.

Following hot on the heels of its Sport cousin, the Range Rover has been given a makeover for the 2018 model year, with new cabin tech and the addition of a plug-in hybrid variant. Exterior enhancements are subtle, but include snazzy new Pixel-laser LED headlights and a new grille.

The Range Rover is also slightly perkier, at the top of the range at least, with the 5-litre supercharged V8 SVAutobiography version getting a slight output hike, from 405kW to 410kW and from 680Nm to 700Nm, allowing the massive cruise liner to surge from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds, according to Land Rover.

For those with a greener conscience, a plug-in hybrid variant, badged P400e, is set to come on stream for the 2019 model year. Mating an Ingenium 2-litre turbopetrol engine to an 85kW electric motor, the drivetrain boasts total system outputs of 297kW and 640Nm, and has a claimed electric-only range of 51km.

As before, the Range Rover is also available with supercharged V6 and V8 petrol engines and a V6 turbodiesel.

As with the recently-facelifted Range Rover Sport, the Range Rover now boasts JLR’s Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, featuring a pair of vertically-stacked 25cm screens, from which occupants can swipe info from one to the other.

The company has also put considerable effort into making the seats more comfortable, with the front seats getting new frames that allow for 24-way movement. Land Rover has also redesigned the rear cabin and the back seats can now recline by up to 40 degrees.

But perhaps the most comforting news is the Hot Stone massage technology that offers up to 25 different massage programmes, and those frosty winter mornings will never be a problem again, with the arm, foot and calf rests being heated. The Range Rover also offers up to 18 connection points, including a domestic plug socket, and 4G Wifi for up to eight devices.

Other available luxuries include a gesture-controlled sunblind, Activity Key, Meridian sound systems (up to 1700W and 29 speakers) and new three-zone ambient lighting. All the good stuff that JLR likes to gloat about nowadays, in other words.

But when can I order mine? JLR SA says the new Range Rover is destined for our shores, but timing has yet to be confirmed.

Very nice to see that the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have been updated and now sport the same interior as the Velar (dual touch screens, etc), but I reckon it does take away some of the Velar's appeal. However, the Velar will still sell good, as it could be an option for buyers who cannot afford the Range Rover / Sport.

New Range Rover SVAutobiography Flagship Unveiled

Land Rover has revealed the updated version of its new flagship luxury SUV, the Range Rover SVAutobiography, ahead of an official debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The Range Rover, of course, recently received a facelift, and these updates have now been applied to the top-end version, too. Furthermore, the British automaker promises that this new flagship – which will be hand-finished at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire – “epitomises the pinnacle of luxury travel” for driver and passengers.

Available exclusively in long wheelbase, the Range Rover SVAutobiography features rear doors that close at the touch of a button. Powertrain options will include a 4,4-litre V8 turbodiesel, a new plug-in hybrid electric-petrol unit and an uprated 5,0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine (now churning out 422 kW). Specifying the latter will likely result in the most expensive Range Rover ever.

In the rear, you’ll find “Executive Class” seats that offer a scarcely believable claimed legroom of more than 1,2 metres. With a powered 40-degree recline capability, hot stone massage function and heated calf and foot rests, Land Rover says this model’s rear cabin promises “a peerless passenger experience”.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself stationed back there, you’ll furthermore enjoy electrically deployable tables, integrated 10-inch touchscreens, a concealed refrigerator and a new Zenith clock.

2018 SVA is the most opulent Range Rover ever

The most luxurious Range Rover ever has just become even more palatial with the reveal of the updated 2018 SVAutobiography ahead of this week's LA Auto Show.

Hand-finished by JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations, the range-topping Rangie gains new and updated engine options as well as some s****y luxury trappings.

Rear occupants don’t even have to physically close the doors once inside, as that can be achieved at a touch of a button on the rear console, after which they can sit back and relax in the airline-style seats with 40-degree recline capability as well as heated calf and foot rests, and even a hot stone massage function.

The SVAutobiography is only offered in long-wheelbase form, meaning rear legroom of over 1.2 metres, according to Land Rover. Entertainment comes in the form of integrated 25.4cm rear screens and 4G WiFi connectivity, and there’s a fridge behind the rear seats that’s just big enough to hold two wine bottles.

Designers also garnished the rear cabin with a Zenith high-end clock, said to be inspired by the Elite 6150 watch.

This hedonistic flagship even puts paid to the ‘indignity’ of crouching into the boot to load items, thanks to an electrically-deployable veneered loading floor, although at this level you’ve probably already hired a chauffeur for that and other mundane tasks like driving.

Said helper will get to enjoy JLR’s new Touch Pro Duo dual-screen infotainment system and a better driving experience, depending on which engine you select.

The SVAutobiography is available with a range of engines, including a new four-cylinder petrol-electric plug-in hybrid with system outputs of 297kW and 650Nm and a claimed electric-only range of up to 51km.

Also on the menu is an uprated 5-litre supercharged top dog V8, with outputs lifted to 415kW and 700Nm.

The 2018 Range Rover line-up is destined for South Africa, but timing has yet to be confirmed at this stage.

Range Rover SVAutobiography revealed ahead of LA motor show

Ultra-luxurious long-wheelbase SUV is priced from £167,850

The Range Rover SVAutobiography long-wheelbase has been revealed ahead of the LA motor show, before orders for £167,850 model are taken from 29 November.

The SVAutobiography LWB is built on the Range Rover’s 3120mm wheelbase (up from 2922mm of the regular car) to provide rear passengers with 1.2 metres of legroom and seats that can recline by 40 degrees.

These deep foam seats feature a hot stone massage function and heated calf and foot rests. Passengers can open and close the doors with a button, and reach a deployable rear table with an integrated 10in touchscreen, with 4G wifi connectivity. Between the two rear passengers is a refrigerator, big enough to hold two wine bottles of four 600ml bottles.

Storage space can be enlarged by folding down the right rear seat, with a power veneer loadspace floor also added to a Range Rover for the first time to aid with loading and unloading.

Power comes from a choice of three engines. At the top of the line up is Land Rover’s 557bhp supercharged 5.0-litre V8, borrowed from the hot SVR and shared with the smaller SVAutobiography, which comes exclusively with the unit. The LWB commands £177,030 with this engine.

Beneath this is a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, which goes into the P400e with 398bhp and requires £168,015 for the car. The entry-level engine is a 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel, which has 334bhp and gives the car is starting figure.

Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern said: “The Range Rover SVAutobiography is the epitome of luxury, comfort and refinement. Our standard-bearer for quality and precision exemplifies the attention to detail and sophistication that has been a hallmark of our most luxurious SUV stretching back almost 50 years.”

Land Rover’s SVO Technical Centre will hand-build the new model, with high levels of customisation available to ensure that no two cars will be the same.

The SVAutobiography’s public showing in LA will see it parked alongside the Discovery SVX and Range Rover Sport SVR, as well as the standard wheelbase SVAutobiography Dynamic.

Range Rover P400e PHEV prototype review

Should I buy one?

There is work still to be done in the Range Rover P400e to make it more competitive before its launch in March, but evidence from the Range Rover Sport 400e shows that the improvements are well within Land Rover’s capabilities to make.

If executed, they will broaden the Range Rover’s appeal without making it the most appealing Range Rover, for it will be suited to those who mainly do short urban journeys and can drive the car solely on electric power most of the time.

Plenty of those people do exist (around one in five buyers, Land Rover reckons), as do those who still crave a big range and world-class refinement. For them, still nothing can top a big diesel engine.

Here’s How Much The Updated Range Rover Will Cost

The updated Range Rover line-up was revealed back in October and included a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option. And now we’ve managed to gather local pricing for the facelifted range (as we’ve done with the refreshed Range Rover Sport line-up), ahead of the launch in the second quarter of 2018.

The addition of as many as six P400e-badged PHEV derivatives – which each combine a 2,0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine with an 85 kW electric motor (housed in the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission) for a total system output of 297 kW and 640 N.m – sees the South African range swell from 12 to 18 variants.

As before, buyers have the choice of standard wheelbase or long wheelbase configurations, along with familiar trim levels (Vogue, Vogue SE, Autobiography and SVAutobiography). Powertrain options (in addition to the new P400e) include the 3,0-litre TDV6 (190 kW), 4,4-litre SDV8 (250 kW) and 5,0-litre supercharged V8 (386 kW and 416 kW).

In addition to the exterior design updates, the British brand claims “heightened comfort” and says new technologies (such as a gesture sunblind) have been added to the cabin. The front seats now boast up to 24-way adjustment thanks to new frames, with wider and deeper foams, as well as heated arm-rests. And the brand’s latest infotainment system has also been added, combining a pair of high-definition, 10-inch touchscreens.

Range Rover also says the rear quarters have been “completely redesigned” with no compromise to the rear load space. The pews back there now feature 25 massage programmes, a 40-degree reclining function and a claimed additional 186 mm of legroom in the case of the Autobiography long-wheelbase derivative. All seat functionality can be controlled via a smartphone app, whether inside or outside the vehicle.

There are up to 17 connection points (from domestic plug sockets, USB and HDMI points to 12-volt sockets) available, as well as 4G Wi-Fi hotspots for up to eight devices.

With the uprated 5,0-litre V8 supercharged petrol engine under its bonnet, the flagship long-wheelbase SVAutobiography will set you back R3 897 362 (before CO2 tax, we must add), making it the most expensive Range Rover ever offered in SA.

Range Rover P400e 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

It would seem, then, that Jaguar Land Rover has created quite a compelling package with the new Range Rover P400e PHEV. Here is a luxurious, comfortable, handsome and refined SUV that also happens to be economical at the same time.

Only, that last part isn’t quite accurate. Although the P400e boasts a claimed economy figure of 101mpg, in reality that was always going to be a bit of a stretch. Limit yourself to driving short distances on all-electric mode, and yes, it’ll be cheap to run. Embark on longer, more demanding trips similar to that of our test route, though, and you’ll find yourself paying a heavy price at the pumps. We managed to average just 23mpg during our time with the car.

Interestingly, then, despite all of its hugely capable off-road technology, this is a Range Rover that’s most at home within the city limits, being driven for short periods of time on electricity alone. That might seem to go against the reputation that Land Rover was built on, but if you’re happy with that, you’re unlikely to be disappointed with the P400e.

Land Rover Range Rover Sentinel

Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations revealed the latest version of its armoured Range Rover Sentinel, which now features more power, unparalleled refinement, all-terrain capability and the latest in occupant protection.

The 380PS 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol engine gives a 40PS power uplift over the V6 petrol fitted previously, ensuring the armoured SUV retains exceptional Range Rover performance across all terrains. Carrying more than one tonne of armour plate and glass, Sentinel will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.4 seconds (0-60mph in 9.8 seconds), with top speed limited to 193km/h (120mph).

Designed and engineered by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, and built at the SV Technical Centre in Warwickshire, the armoured Sentinel provides peerless occupant security with world class comfort. At its core is a protection cell built to stringent whole vehicle standards and in accordance with full ballistic and blast certification*. The enhanced body is engineered to face modern and unconventional forms of attack, including improvised explosive device (IED) fragmentation blasts.

Michael van der Sande, Managing Director, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, said:"The Range Rover Sentinel delivers the exceptional protection and security required by our VIP clients without compromising the superior refinement of the latest Range Rover. The addition of the more powerful 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 engine and a redesigned interior ensures a heightened level of performance and occupant safety."

The chassis, suspension, braking and electronic stability systems are all optimised to retain Range Rover's on-road dynamics, while Sentinel also delivers unparalleled off-road ability for an armoured vehicle of this kind, enabling it to tackle deep water crossings and challenging terrain with ease. Specially manufactured wheels incorporate a run-flat system so the vehicle can be driven over distances of more than 50km (up to 30 miles) at speeds of 80km/h (50mph) if a tyre is damaged.

Sentinel is fitted with armoured glass in order to help protect occupants from attack. Further security systems includes the option for a specially configured front window which drops a maximum of 150mm for document delivery, while it also features a public address system allowing occupants to address people outside the vehicle without leaving their secure environment. Siren and emergency lighting packs are also available.

Range Rover's peerless refinement is retained with the new Sentinel gaining improved cabin space, enhanced headroom and superior seating over the previous generation, which ensures occupants not only benefit from complete protection on the move but also enjoy truly world class comfort. The interior also features Land Rover's latest Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10-inch high resolution touch screens.

Featuring the latest Range Rover exterior design elements, including LED lighting, Sentinel is now offered with the optional Black Pack which adds black finishes to trim items for an even more sophisticated appearance.
