Skoda Karoq Sportline revealed as SUV’s sporty flagship variant
The second new version of the Karoq set to appear at the Paris motor show gets 18in alloys, sports seats and more aggressive styling
Skoda will launch the Karoq Sportline at the Paris motor show, alongside the recently announced Karoq Scout. The Sportline gets sportier styling to complement a mooted Karoq vRS.
The Sportline is the only trim to be offered with the 187bhp 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine in the Karoq range, although it’s also available in 187bhp and 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI guises, as well as a 148bhp 1.5-litre TSI version. Only the most powerful diesel gets four-wheel drive as standard, though, as well as a DSG automatic gearbox. Four-wheel drive and the DSG are options across most of the engine range.
The Sportline is marked out by 18in alloy wheels and different bumpers. Sportline badging on the front wings, as well as tinted windows and black roof rails, also hint at the car’s range-topping status.
Inside, the seats are bolstered for extra support and finished in an exclusive Thermoflux fabric with silver contrast stitching, which extends to the stitching on the leather steering wheel. A black headliner is also fitted, as are stainless steel pedals and ambient lighting. Like the Scout, the Sportline gets the Volkswagen Group’s Virtual Cockpit display instead of traditional dials.
The Karoq’s larger SUV sibling, the Kodiaq, also gets a Sportline trim, which will sit below an upcoming Kodiaq vRS performance flagship. That car is due to be revealed alongside the Karoq Sportline at the Paris motor show later this year.
The Karoq is also expected to gain a vRS-badged sibling along the line, as Skoda continues the expansion of its sporting sub-brand. At the Karoq’s launch last year, however, a final decision hadn't yet been made.
As with the Scout, prices for the Sportline are as yet unconfirmed, but it’ll likely be a few hundred pounds more than the Scout, as per the Kodiaq Scout and Sportline.

Should I buy one?
Even after its Country Life makeover, the Skoda Karoq isn’t a car with the charm of the model it replaces, and it’s much more likely to appeal as a functional and versatile compact family car ready for any occasion than because it does any one thing spectacularly well.
It’d make a dependable occasional off-roader but not a particularly rugged or capable one even by crossover class standards. Meanwhile, if you want the very best-looking, best-handling or most desirable car of its kind, you were never likely to consider it in the first place.
There is, without doubt, a sense of middle-of-the-road averageness and flavourlessness about this car that prevents it from standing out in an overwhelmingly large field of small SUVs. The Karoq’s impressive practicality and versatility can do little to compensate for that problem, and ultimately the Karoq Scout’s beefy bumpers and two-tone seats can provide limited respite from it either.

Skoda builds one-off Karoq-based SUV for cyclists
Karoq Velo concept features a washing machine, Follow Me drone and inbuilt Wi-Fi hotspot
Skoda has unveiled a one-off concept version of the Karoq, which boasts a number of modifications aimed at cycling enthusiasts.
The Karoq Velo was conceived by Skoda’s UK design team, which carried out a survey of more than 1500 cyclists to determine what features to fit to the SUV.
Skoda’s research found that 27% of the cyclists said a major downside of riding is returning to their vehicle in dirty or damp cycling wear. As a result, the Velo features a spin cycle washing machine and integrated pressure washer, meaning owners can clean their clothes and bike before loading the car after a ride.
A full tool kit and puncture repair facilities also feature, in response to the 31% of survey respondents who reported mechanical issues as a major obstacle to enjoying cycling.
A comprehensive LED lighting system means that night-time repairs can be carried out without the need to hold a torch or locate a streetlight.
In addition to the two slots on its conventional roof-mounted bike rack, the Velo can carry a third bicycle in a bespoke cradle mounted in the boot, in the name of enhanced security and protection from the elements.

The Karoq Velo was developed and built by Skoda’s UK division, in collaboration with a team of passionate cyclists and its unique design features were shaped by the results of a survey that involved more than 1500 active riders, who were asked to suggest ideas for the perfect cycling support vehicle.
The result is a vehicle that can even wash your dirty cycling clothes, using a fully integrated spin cycle washing machine. This was developed because 27 percent of the survey respondents said that returning to their car in damp cycling kit was a major downside of riding.
But it doesn’t just wash your clothes.
The on-board water tank also feeds an integrated pressure washer that can clean your bike in a jiffy.

The Karoq’s name is odd, too, but the car beneath the badge is entirely and in some instances delightfully conventional. Larger than the Yeti both inside and out, the Karoq was created with practicality as its main brief – so it retained the smart touches and versatility that made its predecessor so popular, if not that standout styling.
There’s a good array of engines. The petrol range has consisted of 113bhp 1.0-litre, 148bhp 1.5-litre and 187bhp 2.0-litre units. For diesel, you can pick between a 113bhp 1.6-litre and two 2.0 diesels of 148bhp and 187bhp. You can also seek out a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, while four-wheel drive is available on the 1.5 and 2.0 petrols and the 2.0 diesel models.
There are varying trim levels, too. SE brings 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, front and rear electric windows and an 8.0in touchscreen that features smartphone mirroring. SE Technology adds adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors, while SE L has a dedicated built-in sat-nav. The new Karoq can be selected with an Eco pack, which adds sustainable materials to the car’s cabin, such as vegan, leather-effect seat covers made from recycled materials. The door trim on some models is made of ‘Suedia’ (microsuede).

The Karoq might have lost its predecessor’s personality, but on every other front it’s a better car than the one it replaces, and we've just about forgiven it these days. It's a deeply worthy, sensible, inoffensive car that will go about family life in a faithful and fuss-free way without any major gripes or annoyances. Plus, given Volkswagen and BMW are currently on a design and tech self-sabotage mission there's a lot to be said for choosing the Karoq's unpretentiousness over a supposedly more premium rival's foolhardy design. We very much like the Karoq overall. It's just sometimes a bit tricky to remember exactly why.
