Updated Legacy.

Subaru of America, Inc. announced the 2018 Subaru Legacy midsize sedan at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show. The new Legacy features revised styling and significant upgrades to comfort, safety, and multimedia capability. In addition to major changes, myriad smaller engineering and design details throughout the 2018 Legacy enhance the driving experience. The 2018 Subaru Legacy will go on sale in summer 2017.

The 2018 Subaru Legacy, the roomiest sedan in the midsize segment, is available in a 2.5i model with an efficient and responsive 175-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder BOXER engine, or, as the Legacy 3.6R with a 256-hp 3.6-liter 6-cylinder BOXER engine. Both engines come teamed as standard with the Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) with manual mode and paddle shift control switches. A retuned ECU for 2018 provides the CVT with more responsive and smoother acceleration. The 2.5i will be available in standard, Premium, and Sport trims; Limited offers a choice of 2.5i or 3.6R engines. Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Active Torque Vectoring are standard in all trims, making the Legacy the only midsize sedan to feature all-wheel drive as standard on all models.

Already an exemplar of passenger safety, the Legacy adds to its array of driver-assist features for 2018, including available new Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH). Available in conjunction with LED headlights, SRH aims the lights into turns as the driver steers. Also for 2018, Limited models with EyeSight utilize the systems' cameras for High Beam Assist, which automatically turn the high beams on and off depending on traffic conditions.

Subaru reveals subtly redesigned Legacy sedan

Japanese automaker Subaru has revealed the 2018 Legacy that will make its official debut at the Chicago Auto Show later this month.

The exterior of the US-spec sedan has received an understated makeover, with Subaru claiming that the redesigned C-shaped headlamps with LED daytime running lights lend it a sportier appearance. A revised front grille, now with wider and lower openings, also plays a functional role, thanks to an “Active Grille Shutter System” that improves fuel economy by cutting wind resistance.

The refreshed front bumper now also houses LED fog lamps and includes a subtle front spoiler. At the rear, the tailpipe design has changed, and is now integrated into the bumper.

Subaru says it has reshaped the exterior mirrors, added sound insulating film to the front side windows and thickened the rear wheel well aprons in an attempt to reduce ambient noise for passengers.

Subaru says the vehicle’s chassis has been retuned and the dampers recalibrated to reduce body roll and the initial impact of bumps. Brake pedal feel and steering feel has also apparently come in for some work.

The interior of the range-topping Legacy will feature an 8-inch infotainment display debuting Subaru’s latest version of the “Starlink” multimedia system, which offers a variety of so-called cloud applications.

Bluetooth connectivity, iPod control and smartphone integration via Apple Car Play and Android Auto will also be available. The top spec Legacy will furthermore receive a Tom-Tom navigation system as standard.

Subaru says that the new model will feature an extensive array of driver aids as standard, including a rear-view camera and automatic reverse braking, incline start assist, hill hold assist and tyre pressure monitoring.

Models fitted with the brand’s “EyeSight” technology will furthermore gain items such as pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, lane change assist and blind spot detection. Along with this, steering responsive headlights and high-beam assist will also be available.

In terms of powertrains, the 130 kW 2,5-litre four-cylinder and 191 kW 3,6-litre six-cylinder Boxer engines will be carried over from the outgoing model. All new Legacy models will boast symmetrical all-wheel drive, active torque vectoring and a Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission) as standard. The ECU, however, has been retuned to provide the CVT with what Subaru calls “more responsiveness and smoother” acceleration.

MY2018 Outback

Featuring revised front and rear styling for a more robust stance, the 2018 Subaru Outback also debuts significant upgrades to comfort, safety and multimedia capability. Many new engineering and design details throughout the 2018 Outback enhance the driving experience and the vehicle's versatility.

As the World's First Sport Utility Wagon the Subaru Outback was instrumental in launching the crossover trend more than 20 years ago, with rugged styling that highlighted increased capability. Today, the Outback offers the most interior room in an expanding segment of sport-utility wagons: total passenger volume 108.1 cu. ft., plus 35.5 cu. ft. of space behind the rear seats and 73.3 cu. ft. with the standard 60/40-split fold-down rear seatback folded. The load floor is nearly flat, and the cargo area features convenient rear seatback release levers.

Numerous details help make the Outback convenient to load and carry cargo, as well as items such as kayaks and bikes. Roof rails with integrated retractable crossbars are standard on all models, except Touring, which features exclusive low-profile roof rails in a silver finish with available detachable crossbars. Step-style doorsills allow a person to stand firmly when securing objects to the crossbars on all Outback models.

Rugged Good Looks, With an Added Touch of Elegance

The Outback shows a bolder, more rugged looking face for 2018, highlighted by wider, lower grille openings and a new bumper that complement the iconic Subaru hexagonal grille. The C-shaped headlights, parking lights and new horizontal character lines extending outward from the grille subtly suggest the piston motion of the BOXER engine, a Subaru core technology. The redesigned headlights feature distinctive "Konoji" daytime LED running lights.

The redesigned front cladding enhances protection from mud and stones when the vehicle is driven off pavement. A new high-contrast wheel design on Limited trim highlight the luxury-class appearance for the 2018 Outback. The 2.5i base and Premium trims are equipped with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, and all Limited and Touring models offer 18-inch alloy wheels.

Subaru Outback granted a mild facelift for 2018

Subaru has made a handful of slight revisions to its Outback, including visual, comfort and safety updates.

The 2018 Subaru Outback gains new designs for the front bumper, grille and headlamps. The vehicle’s plastic cladding has been reworked to appear more robust, while new alloy wheel designs have also been thrown into the mix.

Those new LED headlamps are furthermore now of the “steering responsive” variety, while higher trim models gain a high-beam assist feature, which adjusts brightness depending on traffic conditions.

Inside, the entire range benefits from a redesigned centre console (including a bigger clock) and more refined materials. Top trim models get the added appeal of contrast stitching and high-gloss trim on various controls. The air-conditioning unit has also been revised to be more efficient.

There’s a new 6,5-inch Starlink touchscreen infotainment system for entry-level models, while the 8,0-inch version remains for top spec variants. These screens double as displays for the reversing camera, which is now standard throughout the range.

The 2,5- and 3,6-litre boxer engines remain untouched and are still mated to the brand’s all-wheel-drive system via a continuously variable transmission.

The updated Subaru Outback is expected to arrive in South Africa in the first quarter of 2018, and we should learn more about local specifications closer to the launch date.

Refreshed Subaru Legacy Sedan Touches Down In SA

The refreshed Subaru Legacy has arrived in South Africa, a year after the US-spec version of the sedan made its debut in Chicago.

As before, just a single derivative is offered locally. Now called the Subaru Legacy 3,6R-S ES, this all-wheel-drive model draws its urge from an unchanged 3,6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine worth 191 kW and 350 N.m. However, Subaru says the Lineartronic CVT to which the horizontally opposed six-pot is attached is “smoother and more fluid” than before.

With these latest updates, the price increases from R599 000 to R619 000.

So, what do you score for the extra R20 000? Well, in addition to the updated styling (and two new paint colours), Subaru says the latest Legacy gains turbine-style 18-inch alloys plus new side-mirrors that now feature integrated LED indicators. The mirror cap on the left side furthermore gains a side-view camera.

The Japanese automaker also says the cabin features “more premium” materials plus new high-gloss black trim with silver contrasting. In addition, there’s a new multifunction leather steering wheel and Subaru’s latest infotainment system (in the form of a seven-inch touchscreen), complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Subaru also points out other small changes inside, from the repositioning of the dual-zone climate control temperature indicators to within the dials themselves, to improvements to the air-conditioning system.

The automaker also claims the Legacy’s electric steering is now “more direct”, while the dampers have been retuned for “better absorption of bumps” as well as “more stability” through corners. Subaru says the brake pedal feel has been “improved”, too.

The updated Legacy also gains Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance technology, which makes use of stereo cameras that scan the road ahead, prompting the system to act to mitigate or reduce the damage of collisions. Key features here include adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, pre-collision throttle management, and vehicle lane departure and sway warning.

As before, the Legacy comes with a five-year/150 000 km warranty and a three-year/75 000 km maintenance plan.

Subaru’s Legacy and Outback tweaked for 2018

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that Subaru still sells a mid-sized sedan called the Legacy. Not that they're sold in any great numbers for that matter, but that’s neither here nor there - point is that it’s still here to tempt those looking for something a little different from the norm and now there’s a slightly updated 2018 version to keep things fresh.

The Legacy - along with its pumped-up Outback crossover-wagon sibling - both receive some mild styling tweaks inside and out, along with new electronic gizmos and revised suspension settings.

In a nutshell, the external design changes include shapelier front and rear bumpers, new sharper-edged C-shaped headlights with LED daytime running lamps, a fresh set of turbine-inspired 18-inch alloys as well as revised side mirrors with LED indicator turn signals. Two new exterior paint options come in the form of Crimson Red Pearl and Magnetite Gray Metallic.

The interior gets a raft of new materials, including high-gloss black central facia trim, all of which aim to impart a more upmarket appearance - as does the redesigned multi-function steering wheel.

On the electronics front, Subaru has installed its latest-generation 17.8cm touchscreen infotainment system with new apps, TomTom-based satnav and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

New driver-assistance gadgets include Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Lane Departure and Sway Warning as well as Steering Responsive Headlights, while the rear-view camera is now joined by front- and side-view cameras.

Mechanically the only real news is revised steering and suspension systems.

As before, the Legacy is powered by Subaru’s normally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six Boxer engine, which is a rare option in today’s ‘downsized’ turbocharged world.

The engine, which produces 191kW at 6000rpm and 350Nm at 4400rpm, is mated to a CVT gearbox and Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system.

The 3.6 is the only engine available in the Legacy, while the Outback can be had with this or a smaller 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol motor, rated at 129kW and 235Nm.

The Legacy 3.6 R-S ES is yours for R619 000, while the equivalent Outback costs R649 000 and the Outback 2.5i-S ES retails at R579 000.
All are sold with a three-year/75 000km maintenance plan and five-year/150 000km warranty.

Subaru refreshes flagship Legacy in SA

• EyeSight Driver Assistance
• Exterior styling tweaks
• Upgraded interior design, materials and technology.
• Improved refinement levels, quieter cabin.

Subaru SA has updated its flagship Legacy in 2018. The new sedan sports new design tweaks, improved interior and enhanced technology with the inclusion of its new EyeSight Driver Assistance.

In South Africa, one model derivative of the Legacy is available - The flagship, Subaru Legacy 3.6R-S ES powered by a DOHC, six-cylinder 3.6 litre Boxer engine capable of 191kW and 350Nm.

The EZ36 engine is coupled to a smoother and more fluid Lineartronic CVT gearbox. Throttle response has also been improved and it works with symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system as well as Active Torque.

Improved design

The exterior has been given a full refresh, with a sportier and more aggressive front. Subaru designers have heightened the headlight edges for a sharper stare, replete with the signature ‘Konoji-design’ C-shaped daytime LED running lights.

The lower grille opening is now lower and wider, above which the traditional Subaru hexagonal features less chrome detailing than before with two black fins that sit below one chrome line on which the Subaru six-star badge sits. The fog light surrounds and cladding have also been tweaked.

A newly designed bumper has been fitted to the rear with a two-tone layout, the lower end of which features a diffuser-like design incorporating more integrated exhaust outlets. Standout features along the flanks of the Legacy are the new turbine-designed 18”, lightweight alloy wheels as well as new side mirrors that now feature integrated LED turn signal indicators and side view camera (left side) for added drive convenience and safety.

Subaru has also added two new exterior colours to the Legacy range - grey metallic and red pearl.

Up on comfort and technology

In 2018, the Legacy gains premium interior cabin materials along the door and dashboard panelling, now sporting new high-gloss black trim contrasted by silver surrounds. From the driver’s seat, a new multi-function leather steering wheel has been adopted behind which is a newly updated on-board computer display with revised graphics and dial surrounds. The focus of the centre stack is the all-new Infotainment system, the most significant technological upgrade on the Subaru Legacy’s entertainment and connectivity agenda.

The 7" screen is larger and now features the new Subaru touchscreen system similar to those used on other all-new Subaru vehicles.

In addition to new apps and TomTom-based SATNAV as standard, the system is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enabled. For better connectivity and safer driving, there is the added feature of voice-control now with two microphones as opposed to one before.

The technology is thanks to Nuance (maker of Dragon Dictation apps for computers and other devices) and the result is more accurate voice interaction with Apple’s Siri or OK Google voice commands as well as other voice command functionality for interaction with the climate control and audio settings.

For improved ergonomics, the dual-zone climate control temperature indicators are housed within the control dials, on either side of which the settings are housed in a revised layout with newer graphics and a larger digital clock. Whilst these new changes are quite conspicuous there are some that won’t be so obvious to the eye but will surely be experienced by the driver and passengers nonetheless. Improvements to the air conditioning system means the cabin is cooled or heated faster than before and the air is spread around the cabin more evenly.

Driver-Focused Performance

In addition to a full house of luxury equipment and features, Subaru engineers have gone further in improving the overall driver feel of the new Subaru Legacy. The electric steering has been improved to be more direct and for better communication to the driver.

The dampers have been retuned for better absorption of bumps in the road as well as more stability in corners. The brake pedal feel has been improved too and these changes all contribute to more driver-focussed and more compliant drive, whether driving enthusiastically or just elegantly cruising.

EyeSight Driver Assistance

Class-leading safety is one of the key selling points of Subaru vehicles, and in the executive guise of the 2018 Subaru Legacy, the level of safety has been vastly improved with the introduction of EyeSight Driver Assist technology being offered on the Legacy in South Africa for the first time.

EyeSight is Subaru’s award-winning system that makes use of stereo cameras that scan the road ahead and then act in a number of ways to mitigate or reduce the damage of collisions.

EyeSight features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, and Vehicle Lane Departure and Sway Warning. Other new safety technologies on the Subaru Legacy include:Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH).

The Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert indicator lamps are larger and have now been moved more prominently to the side of the newly designed side mirrors.

For further convenience and safety, Legacy now sports a Front View Camera and Side View Camera in addition to the Rear-View Camera for better vision directly in front and to the left side of the car.

All these new safety features are in addition to the already impressive list of safety features packed into all Subaru vehicles: Vehicle Dynamics Control; 7 Airbags; ISOFIX child-seat anchors; the use of high-tensile steel in strategic areas around the body structure and more.

Price

The new Subaru Legacy 3.6R-S ES retails for R619 000 and the car is sold with a three-year or 75 000km full maintenance plan as well as a five-year or 150 000km Subaru Warranty.

The Maintenance plans are extendable up to 5-years or 150 000kms at time of purchase.

Subaru Outback 3.6 R-S ES Premium (2018) Quick Review

Facts & Figures

Price: R655 000 (April 2018)
Engine: 3.6-litre, flat 6-cylinder petrol
Transmission: CVT
Power: 191 kW
Torque: 350 Nm
Fuel consumption: 9.9 L/100 km (claimed)
0-100 kph: 7.6 seconds
Top speed: n/a

Pricing & Warranty

The current flagship Outback model sells for a heady R655 000, but it's a full-house package that lacks very little in terms of specification. It is backed by a 3-year/75 000 km maintenance plan (as opposed to a service plan) in addition to a lengthy 5-year/150 000 km warranty. Service intervals are scheduled for every 15 000 km/year.

Verdict

This is an exceptional car that deserves far bigger sales support. It's a pricey prospect and concerns of potentially weak resale value linger, but, as a product, there's preciously little wrong here. Superbly refined, marvellously practical and with a hewn-from-solid feel that's largely disappearing from modern premium vehicles at this price level, the Outback is the equivalent of an automotive swiss army knife. And with this latest round of updates, Subaru has once again shown the power and value of the sum of marginal gains.
