Subaru details all-new SA-bound XV crossover

The 2017 Subaru XV crossover, revealed this week at the Palexpo and due in South Africa in the third quarter of this year is genuinely all new. And then again, it’s not.

It’s new because it’s the first redesign of the XV since the the original launch in 2012 and because it’s built on the company’s completely revised Subaru Global Platform - and it’s not, because it shares that platform and a lot of its mechanical bits with the new Impreza, scheduled for SA release before mid-year.

That includes the Impreza’s 115kW / 196Nm, direct injection 1995cc petrol flat four, which Subaru says is lighter, more powerful, smoother-running and more efficient than the previous-generation naturally-aspirated boxer. It drives all four wheels (of course) via Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive and a Lineartronic constantly variable transmission - which also has a seven-step ‘manual’ mode to mimic a conventional gearbox.

All of which is supervised (and we use that word deliberately) by X-Mode, which integrates control of the engine, all-wheel drive and brakes to optimise traction on loose or slippery surfaces, especially on steep downhills.

The new platform is not only stiffer than the previous XV bodyshell, its revised architecture (and lighter drivetrain) have dropped the centre of gravity by 5mm - which is more significant than it sounds - while retaining its 220mm ground clearance. That has enabled Subaru’s whitecoats to reduce body roll by 50 percent and make the steering more direct (from 14:1 to 13:1).

Comfort zone

The cabin is trimmed in grey with detailed orange stitching on the instrument panel, which features a new 20.3cm touch-screen infotainment system (also to be seen in the Impreza) with voice-controlled satnav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone-pairing, and various other online apps.

The front seats have been revised for improved lateral support, and an electronic parking brake replaces the previous handbrake.

EyeSight

Standard driver aids include active torque vectoring, and the full EyeSight driver assistance package - also shared with Impreza - including stereo colour cameras and software to warn you of impending collisions and brake for you if necessary, as well as lane departure and sway warnings, reverse assistance and adaptive cruise control.

The headlight beams swivel with the steering to light up the inside of corners the direction of travel at intersections, while a single-lens camera monitors oncoming traffic -as well as cars ahead of it in the same lane, automatically switching from high to low beam as per road conditions.

All-New Subaru XV Crossover confirmed for SA

Japanese carmaker Subaru has shown off an all-new XV at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The revamped XV will be introduced in the South African market by the end of 2017.

The Subaru XV is a crossover that combines a compact-sized body with offroad SUV capability. The vehicle features Subaru's distinctive Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and this new model gains collision safety and hazard avoidance technology. The new XV is assembled on Subaru's Global Platform architecture, which underpins numerous models.

First launched back in 2012, the XV has enjoyed some success as a capable family car. This new model features rugged and sporty looks, with extended wheel arches and matte-black cladding. There are new alloy wheels and new colours to choose from. Cool Grey Khaki is what you see in the pictures here, while Sunshine Orange can be seen in the video below.

Subaru South Africa confirmed that the engine will be the same as per the Impreza, which means a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol with a peak output 115 kW will be offered locally. We'll have more details on local specification closer to the South African introduction.

Subaru’s redesigned 2018 Crosstrek comes with CarPlay standard

The New York International Auto Show is set to start late next week, and making its debut this year is the new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. The redesigned Crosstrek will feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay as a standard feature.

The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek will come in three different trim levels: 2.0i base, Premium, and Limited. The base package includes a 6.5-inch touchscreen display that will support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Premium trim package won’t see any display changes, but the Limited trim bumps up the display size. Featuring availability of a Harman Kardon audio system, the multimedia entertainment is further upgraded with an 8-inch color display.

Subaru’s new Crosstrek includes a revised version of the FB 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine which now includes direct fuel injection and a boost to 152-hp from the previous 148. The 2.0i base and Premium trims come with standard 6-speed manual transmission or CVT equipped with X-Mode with hill-descent control. The Limited comes standard with the CVT equipped package.

Today’s news follows Subaru’s Chicago Auto Show announcement of the 2018 Legacy with support for Apple CarPlay. Both the 2018 Legacy and Crosstrek will utilize Android Auto and Apple CarPlay through SUBARU STARLINK technology. According to Subaru, the in-vehicle system offers Bluetooth, iPod control, and smartphone integrations. The in-car display works as the primary screen for standard rear vision cameras and the TomTom assisted navigation system.

Subaru XV - 3rd Quarter 2017

The new XV crossover is already confirmed for South Africa and due in the 3rd quarter of the year. It uses the same new platform as the Impreza, and features a similar interior layout/design as well. It also gets what Subaru calls an advanced new X-Mode system with hill-descent control, and the EyeSight safety package is included.

New Subaru platform targets Europe with 'class-leading' safety technology

Subaru is betting on an all-new platform and what it claims will be ‘class-leading, real-world’ safety to revitalise the brand in Europe.

It also confirmed that it will launch a new-generation hybrid model at the end of 2018 and a new downsized turbocharged engine in 2019. In 2020, Subaru will launch its first all-electric model.

Engineers say that they have started work on the EV - which will be based on an existing model - but are conducting crash tests to ensure that the battery location offers maximum safety.

After some hesitation, Subaru says it will move into autonomy over the next few years, using its Eyesight stereo camera system as a basis for the required technology.

Despite setting new sales records in the US and global sales of 1.012m, Subaru took just 40,600 sales across the European market, giving it just 0.3% of the market and 0.8% of the booming SUV market.

Subaru hopes that a new range of vehicles based on the new platform will mark a turning point. This will be first be used on the all-new XV small SUV, which goes on sale in Europe early next year, followed by the all-new Impreza and upcoming next-generation Forester. There’s no news on whether Europe will get the giant seven-seat Subaru Ascent SUV that's due later next year.

According to Atsushi Nakashima, one of the company’s most senior body design engineers, the Global Platform will deliver ‘premium-level’ refinement in a number of important areas including straight-line stability - reducing the need for tiring steering corrections during high-speed driving - and big reductions in vibration through the steering wheel and floor.

The platform has been designed to be compatible with crash standards as far ahead as 2025. US versions of the Impreza structure already get a specially engineered B-pillar with a wall thickness of between 1.4mm and 2.75mm along its length to help better protect occupants.

At a technical presentation in Belgium, Subaru showed a video of the new Impreza being struck head-on by a 2.5-tonne trolley at 56mph. The car's boxer engine slides away under the floorpan rather than impacting on the passenger space, and the front structure is substantially crushed against the bulkhead, but the front doors are hardly impacted and could still be opened.

Subaru has also just announced that it has opened a new test track facility in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. This will be used to develop ‘driver assist technologies’.

Technical highlights of the new structure

The new Global Platform has been dramatically improved by the use of six structural box-sections running under the floorpan, up from four in the outgoing platform. The front suspension towers are now also braced against the lower A-pillar and bulkhead and adhesives used in addition to spot welding.

Subaru claims a big improvement in platform stiffness. Torsional rigidity is up by 70%, front suspension rigidity by 70%, front body lateral rigidity by 90% and rear subframe rigidity by 100%. Tuning of the ride aims to be ‘comfortable but firm’.

The improved front-end rigidity is such that Subaru claims that, thanks to a reduction of body flex, turn-in response of the vehicle is improved by 0.1sec, which is noticeable to the driver. The new architecture is also said to be able to absorb 40% more energy from an impact.

Pedestrian safety has been improved on the new platform with the development of a new bonnet airbag system that doesn't need an expensive pop-up bonnet. The airbag is deployed from beneath the rear edge of the bonnet and also protects the base of the A-pillars.

Subaru’s Eyesight camera system (pictured above), which uses tracking recognition for moving objects similar to the face recognition used by digital cameras, has reduced rear-end collisions by 83% and collisions with pedestrians crossing roads by 52%, according to the company’s own figures. In Japan, Eyesight has already received a Touring Assist function that can control acceleration, braking, and steering in motorway jams.

HERE’S HOW MUCH THE NEW SUBARU XV COSTS IN SA

The new, second-generation Subaru XV is set to launch in South Africa in July, and we’ve managed to track down pricing for the slightly pared back two-derivative range.

Despite sporting conservatively revised exterior styling, the new model is just that: pretty much all-new (bar the powertrain, that is). It runs on the latest Subaru Global Platform and is slightly larger than its forebear (with the wheelbase growing some 30 mm). Inside, too, sweeping design and ergonomic changes have been made.

Under the bonnet, however, the Japanese automaker has retained the original range’s 2,0-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder Boxer engine. But a few minor tweaks have boosted the horizontally opposed unit’s peak output from 110 kW to 115 kW, although maximum torque stays at 196 N.m. Claimed combined fuel consumption, meanwhile, improves from 7,9 to 7,3 L/100 km.

The manual gearbox in the base model of the outgoing local line-up falls away, leaving a pair of variants employing the brand’s continuously variable transmission. The first comes in at R385 000, which represents a R4 000 premium over the first-generation equivalent.

The flagship 2,0i-S ES variant costs R439 000 and adds Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance technology designed to reduce or circumvent collisions caused by driver error and fatigue. Subaru says the system does this by detecting the presence of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and other “potential hazards” up to 110 metres ahead.

The range-topper furthermore gains a more impressive standard features list, and comes equipped with the likes of LED headlamps, 18-inch alloys, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate contro, a sunroof, an 8,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a reversing camera, active torque vectoring and satellite navigation.

Pricing:

Subaru XV 2,0i CVT: R385 000
Subaru XV 2,0i-S ES (Eyesight) CVT: R439 000

Line-up and Pricing

For now only 2 models are offered, with the standard specification XV 2.0i CVT retailing for R385 000 and the Premium specification 2.0i-S ES CVT priced at R439 000. Both models come backed with Subaru's 5-years/150 000 km warranty and a 3-years/75 000 km Full Maintenance Plan – the latter can be further extended to 5-years/150 000 km at extra cost.

SA pricing and specs: All-new Subaru XV is here

For a company that once rejected the whole SUV philosophy in favour of all-wheel drive station wagons, Subaru has really embraced the crossover ethos with the second-generation XV, released in South Africa this week, two months after its world premiere at the Geneva motor show.

It shares the new Subaru global platform (and its two-litre direct-injection flat-four Boxer) with the Impreza sedan, but also comes with X-Mode - previously only available on the bigger Outback and Forester - which enhances off-road performance at the touch of a button by combining engine control, braking and all-wheel drive for extra control when the car breaks traction on loose or slippery surfaces, and includes built-in hill descent control.

The new XV is marginally larger than its predecessor - 15mm longer and 20mm wider - but significantly lighter, thanks mainly to weight savings on the heaviest components - 12kg off the engine and 7.8kg off the gearbox.

It’s rated for 115kW at 6000 revs and 196Nm at 4200rpm and is available in South Africa only with a full auto-step ship Lineartronic constantly variable transmission, offering the illusion of seven manual speeds via paddle shift. All SA-spec XVs also come with a roof spoiler and roof rails, and roll on special 18 or 19 inch wheels.

The electric power steering system is also lighter and more compact, with a shorter steering ratio of 13:1, while the suspension mounts are more rigid, reducing body roll and lowering the the centre of gravity.

The interior remains true to the design language set by the Impreza, flowing from the centre stack to focus on both front-seat occupants. Trim panels, switchgear, multifunction steering wheel and door inserts are finished in black and silver with (unique to the XV) orange contrast stitching on the steering wheel, gear lever and centre stack.

The higher-specced ES model also features a 20cm StarLink infotainment touchscreen that works like a tablet with touch, swipe and pinch gestures to negotiate its TomTom navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functions - or you can use voice direction via either Google Now or Siri Eyes Free.

The ES is also the first model in South Africa with Subaru’s EyeSight driver aids package which uses stereo cameras to detect pedestrians, cyclists and other possible hazards at up to 110 metres, and controls acceleration, braking and cruise control to soften or avoid collisions.

It also features lane-keeping assistance and reverse automatic braking, which scans the back of the car while reversing and will automatically stop the car if it spots an obstacle you haven’t. More safety features include adaptive headlights, auto high beam, blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert.

Subaru XV 2.0i Lineartronic 2017 review

Should I buy one?

While it is undoubtedly better than its predecessor, UK specification and pricing are yet to be announced so it’s hard to be definitive on where the XV lies among its current rivals. Its improved dynamics and genuine no-nonsense off-road ability give it a fighting chance of broader interest, although a lack of a diesel option could hamper its success in the UK.
