Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept
Volkswagen of America, Inc. unveiled the latest enthusiast build for 2021, the VW Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept. Combining fresh styling updates and a unique color palette with a modified 2.0-liter TSI® engine, lowered suspension, and custom wheels, the concept shows the sporty potential of the Chattanooga-assembled midsize SUV.
"The launch of the all-new Golf GTI and Golf R got us thinking about how to inject some of that VW magic into our SUVs," said Scott Keogh, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America. "This concept is proof that it's possible to build SUVs that could appeal to our performance enthusiast base."
The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept started with a production vehicle assembled in Chattanooga, which was then modified by Volkswagen enthusiast Jamie Orr. The performance-enhanced SUV concept features a four-seat configuration and incorporates the striking blue color Eisvogelblau, translating to "Kingfisher Blue," currently available on select Volkswagen products in Europe. The concept was hand painted by the Chattanooga production team.

While EVs are the next generation, it’s good to see some automakers still thinking about performance. And while crossovers do indeed suck (the fact that they are popular doesn’t make that any less true), I’ll take performance any way I can get it at this point. Enter the Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept, a look at what could be a performance crossover from VW in the making.
The new GTI and Golf R had VW wondering if they could do the same thing for its crossover. Or, at least, a trial balloon was worth it. As VW of America CEO Scott Keogh said, “This concept is proof that it’s possible to build SUVs that could appeal to our performance enthusiast base.”
Engineers started with an Atlas Cross Sport SEL R-Line. With the help of a VW enthusiast named Jamie Orr, over the course of several months, the Cross Sport was modified. Volkswagen’s US division builds an SUV called the Atlas. It’s bigger than a Tiguan but not quite a Touareg, and it’s also available in a coupe-like ‘Sport Cross’ body style. It’s the latter version that forms the basis of this new concept car, called the Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept.
As the latest enthusiast build to come out of Volkswagen USA, the vehicle features low-riding suspension, massive rims, motorsport-inspired cabin and a modified 2-litre TSI engine.
“The launch of the all-new Golf GTI and Golf R got us thinking about how to inject some of that VW magic into our SUVs,” said Volkswagen’s American region CEO Scott Keogh. “This concept is proof that it’s possible to build SUVs that could appeal to our performance enthusiast base.”
Modified by Volkswagen enthusiast Jamie Orr, the Atlas Cross Sport GT Concept features 22-inch ABT Sport HR Aero wheels, as well as ST Suspension XTA Plus 3 coilovers, Tarox eight-piston front brakes, while the usual chrome exterior trimmings make way for gloss black.
The concept is powered by a modified version of the familiar EA888 2,0-litre TSI turbopetrol engine. Featuring an IS38 turbocharger as well as an additional front-mounted radiator from a Golf 7 R, the engine produces “more than” 225 kW, Volkswagen says, which is a good 50 kW more than the standard Atlas 2,0 TSI. Interestingly the Atlas is also available with a 206 kW 3,6-litre VR6 engine.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. unveiled the new 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show. The refreshed seven- and five-seaters offer enhanced technology, upgraded interior designs and materials, and a livelier powertrain.
"The Atlas was the first modern Volkswagen designed, engineered and produced specifically for American buyers, and since its debut, it has become a major player in the U.S. market," said Pablo Di Si, president and CEO, Volkswagen of America. "The refreshed Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport continue to build on that success, with an elegant new interior and a sophisticated turbocharged engine that improves both performance and the driving experience."
While the refreshed Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport maintain the same underpinnings of the successful outgoing models, the spacious interior of each vehicle receives a major upgrade for the 2024 model year. Premium materials are adopted throughout, including a leatherette-trimmed soft-touch dash and center console. Front-row door trim and décor flow seamlessly into the dash panel, creating an upscale cockpit; the door treatment is also mirrored in the second row. Available ambient lighting with 30 color choices pairs with innovative backlit dash décor featuring the model name to elevate the new design. Top-of-range models feature quilted leather seats with a diamond pattern.
Comfort features get a boost as well. A heated steering wheel with shift paddles, ventilated front seats and a height-adjustable passenger seat are now standard fare, along with Climatronic® automatic climate control and Voice Control. The center console is redesigned with a storage cubby underneath. Leather seating surfaces and heated rear seats are now available a trim line lower than previous models.

The New York International Auto Show kicks off in the Big Apple this week, bringing automakers from around the world together to show off their latest and greatest creations. This year, Volkswagen has brought an update to its Atlas SUV to the show, which it says was inspired by the rugged Basecamp concept it showcased in 2019.
The VW Atlas Basecamp was meant to show what the VW SUV was capable of off-road, packing in a lift kit, all-terrain tires and rugged styling to prove to any onlookers that it was tough. The face of Peak Edition models immediately stands out from other Atlas trims with a rugged front fascia and underbody cladding in silver. A gloss-black "X" design element stretches across the lower fascia, borrowed from Atlas Cross Sport. Two chrome strips pop on an otherwise blacked-out grille, flowing to either side of the illuminated logo.
Moving around the side of the vehicle, a large gloss-black badge adorns the front quarter panel with the Peak Edition logo in orange and chrome. Eighteen-inch black alloy wheels equipped with 255/60 all-terrain tires bolster the versatility of the Atlas, while rugged side sills in black and silver visually reinforce the look. Black mirror caps, window surround, wheelarches, and roof rails complete the black-out look in profile.
At the rear, a black tailgate strip meets a rugged black and silver diffuser with chrome exhaust bezels. New exterior colors for the Atlas family, and exclusive to Peak Edition models, are Avocado Green and Pure Grey.
