First pics of the all new small SUV from DS/

DS 3 Crossback

Pushing back the limits, DS 3 Crossback is a vehicle of distinctive sculptural styling and exceptional proportions, available in 100% ICE (Internal Combustion Engines - petrol & diesel) and 100% Electric versions, featuring exclusive technologies and taking refinement to the extreme. Built on Groupe PSA's all-new 'Common Modular Platform' (CMP), it opens new horizons in both technology and styling. DS 3 Crossback is both a city car and a long-distance road car. Pushing conventions aside, it opts for spectacular technologies including DS MATRIX LED VISION headlights, flush door handles that deploy automatically and a fully digital driving display. These avant-garde features go hand in hand with a sense of refined comfort, a rich array of safety equipment and driver assistance functions, and unequalled acoustic excellence. Elegant and attractive, DS 3 Crossback is for all those looking for a car with instant appeal that is stylish, high-tech, comfortable and dynamic.

POWERFUL, SCULPTURAL DESIGN...

DS 3 Crossback is identifiable at first glance as a premium, compact SUV, with its moderate length of 4.12m, broad on-road stance and large wheels (690mm, 18"), as well as its ground clearance.

At the front, the DS WINGS form a finely chiselled setting for the sculpted, vertical lines of the emblematic DS grille. The DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) with their pearl-like vertical LEDs and the tapered headlights of the DS MATRIX LED VISION system suggest a contemporary edge and performance. An impression reinforced by the wide ribbed horizontal bonnet.

New DS 3 Crossback revealed with petrol, diesel and electric power

DS launches new Audi Q2-rivalling small SUV as its first EV, ahead of a Paris Motor Show debut

DS Automobiles has revealed its second model since becoming a standalone premium car maker pitched directly at the likes of Audi and Volvo – the Audi Q2- rivalling DS 3 Crossback. The new model will make its first public debut at next month's Paris Motor Show.

Following the DS 7 Crossback as the second of six planned DS models by 2023, the small SUV enters into the most competitive and fastestgrowing segment in Europe. The DS 3 Crossback is the first model based on the PSA Group’s new common modular platform (CMP) architecture, which will underpin every small car from DS, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Vauxhall in the immediate future, including the next Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall Corsa.

The French-built DS 3 Crossback, which will reach the UK in the second quarter of next year, is also an indirect replacement for the DS 3 three-door supermini. That model will stay in production until the end of 2019 before being phased out. The DS 3 Crossback, codenamed D34, will be offered with petrol and diesel engines and, soon after launch, as a dedicated electric vehicle.

The plan of DS, and indeed the whole of PSA, is to offer electrified versions of each of its cars, rather than have bespoke electric models. Engines include 99bhp, 128bhp and a new 153bhp variant of the three-cylinder 1.2-litre Puretech petrol unit, with an eight-speed automatic gearbox offered.A four-cylinder 99bhp 1.5-litre diesel will also feature.

The EV uses a 50kWh lithium ion battery powered by a 134bhp electric motor (0-62mph in 8.7sec, with a top speed of 93mph) to provide a range of more than 186 miles on the WLTP test cycle (an exact figure has yet to be confirmed). On the now-outdated NEDC cycle, the range was 280 miles. An 80% recharge of battery capacity is possible within half an hour through 100kW rapid chargers. The batteries are stored in place of the fuel tank, under seats or within the centre tunnel to ensure cabin and luggage space is identical to the fossil-fuel versions.

The car’s styling was inspired by the DS 7 Crossback, while the shark-fin side pillars are a nod to the DS 3. DS design chief Thierry Métroz says that the 4118mm-long, 1791mm-wide and 1534mm-high DS 3 Crossback’s design has been optimised around the new CMP architecture. DS designers were involved in its gestation to give the car the best possible chance of design leadership in such a style-led segment. To that end, DS is hopeful of challenging at the top of the sector in terms of sales

The DS 3 Crossback is being pitched as a technology-rich model in its segment, with features such as flush-fitting door handles, matrix LED headlights and, unusually for any car let alone one of this size, no visible rubber between the side windows and bodywork. Much of the technology used, such as the active safety systems, is borrowed from the larger DS 7 Crossback. It includes an emergency braking system that can detect pedestrians at night. Premium features that have also made their way from the DS 7 Crossback include nappa leather and Alcantara interior trim options.

The aforementioned combustion engines will almost inevitably account for the bulk of 3 Crossback sales, but the launch of an electric model - DS's first - will set the premium French brand on a path laid out by its parent company to become a builder of only electrified cars from 2025. The 3 Crossback EV will therefore be a pivotal model in the brand’s future growth plans.

Peugeot has demonstrated the effectiveness of launching SUV models; its strong sales growth represented more than two-thirds of PSA’s 2017 sales. DS’s more expensive products mean it is unlikely to challenge for the top spot, but executives will be hoping the 3 Crossback can turn the company’s recent sales downturn on its head.

Demand for DS models declined by a significant 38.5% last year, largely due to a heavy decrease in sales in the Chinese market.

Sigh so sad seeing these posts and knowing I won’t be able to purchase one here.

DS3 Crossback 2019 review

Should I buy one?

I don’t know. It seems like a lot of money to me for a tall version of a compact car, but then I think I once said the same about the Nissan Qashqai, so what do I know?

But whether the B-segment SUV is here to stay or whether we’ll one day remember it with all the fondness of the small coupé-cabriolet, the Crossback is competitive.

What I like about it is that it has its own identity – there are sufficient design differences inside that it does feel removed from Peugeot/Citroen norms despite shared components. And while some of the ergonomics are iffy and plastics shiny, so too are some quite classy.

Even DS will admit that French manufacturers have had trouble convincing people, in the past, of their premium credentials. That the Crossback competes with an Audi says as much about to where the big German brands have put themselves, as where DS is stretching itself.

The line between mainstream and premium has never looked so faint, and it’s not just aspirational brands like DS who have things to gain or lose by stepping over it.

DS 3 Crossback BlueHDi 100 Prestige 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Although the 3 Crossback offers no class-leading attributes in terms of its driving experience, it does at least provide something distinctive and appealing in a segment where style has a big influence on purchasing - or leasing - decisions. If you’ve never driven one of the competition, it could prove to be a satisfying ownership prospect, all the while giving you something to admire on the driveway when you put it to bed for the night.

But what really hurts the 3 Crossback is the pricing strategy, which contrives to make the Audi Q2 and Mini Countryman look like suspiciously good value. An equivalent Q2 is within £1000, while a 2.0-litre diesel with quattro four-wheel drive and an S-tronic gearbox is within £500 of our test car. It may well be that the best of the 3 Crossback is yet to come, with the E-Tense version offering around 180 miles of range, an 80% battery charge in 30 minutes and 134bhp - all for £32,850 in Prestige trim.

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense

Largely because automotive luxury now means 100% electric mobility, DS has created the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE. At first glance, there is not much to differentiate this «zero emission» livery from other versions. But on the outside, its exclusive Cristal Pearl paint, satin-chrome finishes, E-TENSE emblems and special rear bumper, without an exhaust pipe, give the game away. Inside, the dedicated information displayed on the digital instrumentation and its gear lever embossed with the «E-TENSE» emblem signature point to the fact that you are indeed in a 100% electric vehicle. Even though the batteries are housed in new «CMP» platform, DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE boasts the same spaciousness and the same boot volume as all other versions.

"The specifications of our first 100% electric B-SUV premium were based on three main pillars," explains Rémi Seimpère, DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE project director.

1-Range: at 320 km, in accordance with the WLTP (430 km NEDC) standard, the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE offers a range that meets the vast majority of customer needs. Energy management within the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE is fully optimised thanks to regenerative braking that recharges the battery when the vehicle decelerates and a heat pump that reduces electrical consumption.
2-Recharging capacity: The DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE carries a high-capacity charger. Although the car can be charged from a standard socket using the Mode 2 cable provided, a 11 kW Wall box will reduce the charging time to just 5 hours (Mode 3 cable supplied). At a public 100 kW quick charge terminal, 80% of the battery can be charged in only 30 minutes, which represents an average range of 9 km per charging minute.
3-Acoustic comfort: silence is one of the vital components of any electric car. "With the DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, we have set the bar very high in order to become the benchmark in this area. Road noise and other aerodynamic disturbances are perfectly filtered."

Citroen 'strengthened' by creation of DS brand

Citroen's product planning chief says spinning off premium sub-brand has allowed firm to focus on key values

Citroën's image has been strengthened by the decision to split DS into a standalone brand, according to its product planning boss.

Turning DS into a standalone brand has helped to strengthen Citroën, according to the latter firm’s product planning boss.

The French firm re-introduced the DS moniker as a sub-brand in 2010, in order to expand its range with more premium models. It was then spun off into a full standalone premium brand within the PSA Group in 2015.

While there were fears adding a third PSA brand alongside Peugeot and Citroën might confuse buyers, Citroën product planning boss Xavier Peugeot says the split has freed up his brand to focus on comfort and design.

“When the decision was made by [PSA Group chief] Carlos Tavares to create DS there were some reactions in the Group that it would be very difficult for Citroen, having lost a key asset.

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense 2019 review

Should I buy one?

The electric DS 3 Crossback (we don’t see the odd 'E-Tense' part of the name playing well in the UK) is a fascinating arrival, offering a new kind of compact luxury to the market for electric cars at a price not too far adrift of less luxurious models.

Best of all, it promises good things from electric versions of the 208 and Vauxhall Corsa, which will use the same powertrain. The market for pure-electric superminis just got much more interesting.

DS 3 Crossback E-Tense Ultra Prestige 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

The DS 3 Crossback E-Tense isn’t actually the most practical small EV, and nor is the car that smarter buyers will naturally gravitate towards. While prices for the car do start £5000 lower than that of our test car, the DS was never likely to appeal on value grounds given the way its maker positions itself; and even at £31,000 after your gift from HM Treasury, it doesn't.

On that basis, this is a car that has been somewhat painted into a corner; but that doesn’t mean it’s entirely without appeal. Although it could function better as a small luxury car, it drives reasonably well and has the practicality and usability to satisfy plenty of less demanding supermini and wider premium hatchback converts.

There are more genuinely innovative cars in the growing EV market and, in my book at least, there are also more striking and alternative-looking ones. As we’ve covered, there are also simply better cars to choose from. But if you simply like the cut of the 3 Crossback E-Tense's jib, and aren’t too worried about dealing with the particular restrictions of electric car ownership, you needn't check the urge to splurge here. The EV market is a growing one, and there's plenty of room for a bit of richness and variety within it yet.

DS weighs up new supermini to replace DS 3 Crossback

French premium brand ditched original DS 3 in 2019, as it pushed to capitalise on crossover segment

The boss of French premium car brand DS says a new supermini could be on the cards as it ramps up plans to renew its smallest offering, the DS 3 Crossback.

The crossover replaced the former DS 3 supermini – first sold as a Citroën – in 2019 in a bid to capitalise on the hugely popular and still growing B-SUV crossover hatchback segment.

But as the car maker looks to its next generation – especially ahead of its 2024 full-electrification plan – boss Béatrice Foucher told Autocar that she wouldn’t rule out a return to the 3’s roots, adding that the original 3 “was very successful in the UK”.

If it were to return, it would do so with an electric powertrain and sit on parent brand Stellantis’s STLA Small platform, which is due to be released halfway through the decade.

Foucher said: “We are working on the renewal of the DS 3, and when we say 'renewal', it doesn’t say that we will renew the car strictly as it is today.

“The purpose of renewing is to say: ‘Okay, we have customers [already], and we [are also] looking at some new customers we would like to talk to with a new car, and what would be the best product in order to do so?’

“[We need to] capitalise on what has been done. This is what we are thinking about for the time being.”

DS 3

For the start of Paris Fashion Week, Womenswear Ready-to-Wear Spring-Summer 2023, DS Automobiles has unveiled its latest creation, New DS 3. Longstanding partner of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, DS Automobiles chose this unmissable event in the fashion capital to reveal New DS 3 in the streets of Paris and to invite its ambassador Andrea Brotschi to unveil New DS 3 in a photoshoot depicting a black dress with a very long train that contrasts with New DS 3's fresh Diva Red colour.

Benchmark in its segment in terms of design, technology and electrification, DS 3 CROSSBACK becomes New DS 3. Characterised by a new more efficient and dynamic front, a restructured and attractive range, the arrival of new technology and a new electric motor/battery pairing for its 100% electric version, New DS 3 really stands out from the competition.

The New DS 3 is a subtle facelift of the DS 3 Crossback with new 54kWh battery

Stellantis marked Paris Fashion Week, Womenswear Ready-to-Wear Spring-Summer 2023 with the announcement of the new DS 3, a subtle facelift and name-change of the DS 3 Crossback.

The design is the bigger talking point in Stellantis' presentation of the new DS 3, though the changes are hardly groundbreaking. The grille is restyled with emphasis on gloss black with subtle chromed-diamond tips. The DS Wings have been tweaked to join the grille and headlamps.

Speaking of the headlamps, they have a more dynamic design on the inside with bigger LEDs - two LED lines are vertically-arranged on either side of the front.

There's a new spoiler designed to improve the car's aerodynamic performance. The wheels are new as well, both the 17 and 18-inch bring improvements to efficiency.

Finally, on the design front, there are seven body colors in opaque, metallic, and pearlescent finishes. There are two new pearlescent colors for the new DS 3 - the flagship Diva Red, a three-layer color that's exclusive to the car, and Lacquered Grey.

2022 DS 3 drops Crossback tag, EV gains range and power

High-riding supermini gets a simpler name, a subtle new look and an improved electric offering

DS has lifted the covers on an updated version of its DS 3 crossover, bringing sleeker styling and a revised electric powertrain boosting range and power.

The visual changes amount to a nip-and-tuck in line with the alterations made to the larger DS 7: replacing the curved daytime running lights with the angular signature from the DS 4 and slightly slimming the headlights.

The most significant differences come under the skin. As with the Peugeot e-208, which uses the same CMP platform, the electric E-Tense version of the DS 3 has been given an uprated powertrain, increasing power from 134bhp to 154bhp. Its battery has grown from 45kWh (usable capacity) to 50.8kWh (usable), increasing the official range from 200 miles between charges to almost 250 miles.

Given that this powertrain – first announced for the upcoming Peugeot e-308 – has already been adapted for the e-208 and the DS 3, it's likely that it will also soon be deployed in the Vauxhall Corsa-e supermini.

A petrol engine is also offered in the 3 in 99bhp and 128bhp flavours, the former available only with a six-speed manual gearbox but the latter optionally paired with an eight-speed automatic.

Updated DS3 E-Tense gets more power and bigger range

DS unveiled a slightly updated DS 3 crossover, in the process the car received few visual changes, it dropped the Crossback name, got a better and stronger motor and even ended up with a bigger battery.

The biggest visual change comes courtesy of new and much slimmer headlights, the light signature has been updated as well and now it resembles the one from DS 4.

The bulk of changes happen underneath the updated body. Since the DS 3 E-Tense shares its CMP platform with the Peugeot e-208, it was just a question of time before it got the same and updated electric motor. The power goes up to 154 HP which is exactly 20 HP more than it had before.

The battery has been replaced with a larger unit, now it offers 50.8 kWh of usable capacity - the result is 250 miles (402 km) WLTP range which is 50 miles more than the car managed before.

The all-new all-electric DS3 goes on sale with more power and bigger battery

The new DS 3 was unveiled at Paris Fashion Week ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show. The latest model from DS Automobiles sets itself apart from the competition with its redesigned front, updated range, and new technologies, including new electric motor and improved battery for the fully electric version.

One of the most noticeable changes to the new DS 3 is its bold and balanced exterior design, which combines volume and lines. The front of the vehicle has been updated to give it a more dynamic and graceful appearance, with a larger grille and gloss black or chromed diamond tips that match the rest of the DS Automobiles line.

The new LED headlights, which are standard throughout the range, give the vehicle a sharper look with their three satin chrome feature modules and more dynamic design. An optional upgrade is the DS MATRIX LED VISION, which features intelligent control and automated main beam for optimal comfort and safety. The new daytime running lights also add to the vehicle's signature look, with two vertically aligned LED lines on either side of the front.

In addition to these aesthetic updates, the new DS 3 has also undergone technical improvements. The spoiler and grille have been redesigned to enhance aerodynamics, and the lower air intake grille now has aerofoils to show off this improvement. The grille and bonnet insignia also feature a Clous de Paris embossed insert and come in different colors depending on the model.

Other design features of the new DS 3 include shark's fin, flush-fitting door handles, and hidden external window seals, which all blend ambitious design with technological skill. The tailgate and lights are highlighted by a glossy black strip, and the trim features polished stainless steel "DS AUTOMOBILES" lettering that has been divided and set using a new technique.
